Frontier to drop VR support in 2020?

Sigh.... I really don't know what I'm going to do. I'm already dreading Odyssey coming out. At least there's never been a piece of software ever that's been released that's met the original release schedule, so I have at least 18-24 months still, am I right?

feel you. it seems horizons will support vr even after odyssey so you should be covered (fingers crossed! frontier said so but i can't really rule out they say something different on release).

in fairness, though, the probability is high that you won't miss out much with odyssey. it will be a wholly different game. surely a must have for hardcore fans who will want all and every aspect of the 'ed franchise universe' lifestyle, but in the end it's going to be a fps with beautiful backdrops. like the zillions out there, which are ... mostly uninteresting? just one made by frontier? not really impressive credentials there. like you said, if you take vr away from horizons it devalues steeply. apart from stellar forge and the scale ... the actual gameplay isn't anything to write home about. there is zero reason to expect anything different from odyssey, plus the scale becomes a bit moot if action is localized on planets.

The problem is Odyssey is also a planet tech refresh, so playing in Horizons will mean a VR player misses out on that refresh.

ED looked great in the Pimax 8K and now my 8KX is on the way, so they better not drop VR! Aaargh! (I'd have to sell the whole VR kit if they did)

luckily it was confirmed on Wednesday that there will be VR in Odyssey (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/odyssey-update-on-vr-and-ship-interiors.554223/)

A projected screen on foot at launch, the rest remains viable as it is.
My apologies Craith, I'm humbly submitting a challenge to your statement:

1) FDev state that the headset will work as a flat screen monitor as you say ergo it will not be a VR experience.

2) The announcement does not at any point ( please correct me if I misread it ) commit to making VR available much less an idea of when. This announcement only alludes to the principle that VR should only be implemented if it's a good experience. They've said this before so nothing new there unfortunately.

One might moot the point that displaying a projected screen in the headset 'is' VR, however FDev state, "we do strongly believe that VR should only be enabled for on foot gameplay when we have an experience that truly matches the same quality bar that we set for cockpits", ergo FDev do not consider this change to be VR either.

Might one respectfully suggest that your statement is misleading?

FDev state that the headset will work as a flat screen monitor for the on-foot sections. The rest of Odyssey - flying in tenuous atmospheres and driving around on those worlds - will now be in VR from launch, which was not previously the case. I don’t see anything misleading in Craith’s post.

Personally, I'm going to wait for the launch. As per the posted link above, things are looking better (or as they should) with respect to the future of Vr in ED, but I'm hesitant, and certainly won't commit any dollars, until I see it working.

If everything works as it currently does in vr, and the out of ship experience is 2d "in headset", then I'm fine with that, I guess. Provided I'm reading what they've stated correctly, I would go ahead and support that, with my wallet.

Maybe I'm just being jaded.. or my expectations aren't being managed - no idea which though.

Hey, this is a step in the right direction. It was a no buy before, now it's a wait and see. It sounds like working on vr space legs is at least a possibility down the line as opposed to a hard no.

Well I’m quite happy with the recent announcement - previously we were told it was best to assume there would be no VR at all in Odyssey “at launch” (with all the negative connotations that phrase has), and now we’re getting existing VR gameplay extended into Odyssey from day 1 and a much more positive sounding statement regarding the on-foot parts in VR for the future.

I’m looking forward to flying and driving under different skies next year.
