Galaxy map is impossible to navigate with VR

With Hotas, X52 pro, map is very easy to use. No complaints from me there. Just set it up with the joystick

I can only add my experience again, it's far away from impossible to use, and I stated this in several of the more several other threads that already exist on the forum. There's a search function, btw. Galaxy map works like a charm here (X52pro as well, but any other joystick with some buttons will do). I personally have bound the rotating axes to the joystick, and the horizontal movement axes (fw, bw, lt, rt) to a hat. Pinky+hat gives me zoom and vertical movement. Do not mess with the standard UI setup (cursor movement, select, switch tab), as you still need this in galaxy map. You also need to activate the grid, which is on by default but you might have switched it off in the past.

Each of us on this VR/Galaxy map thing ends up with his or her own work around, be it mouse keyboard, Xbox controller or whatever.
I use the HOTAS - Saitek X52 Pro and after a morning of shouting obscenities and throwing my arms about like a monkey on heat while trying desperately to map a course to Aditi from some other place I decided to calm down and just practice, practice, practice. I got it after about 10 minutes of determination. It's like learning how to ride a bike, or making love to a grandmother, after a while you can do it without even knowing you're doing it.
And don't use the mouse button or wheel thing on the HOTAS, it just makes life even more difficult. (my opinion not a truth).

If you setup your Hotas properly to work with the maps it's a joy to use.
Maybe you want to google something like "Elite VR Galaxy map setup"
There must be some movies or other explanations.

No, it isn't a "joy to use" by any stretch of the imagination, it works slowly and is clunky and in no way compares to how easy it is to use when not in VR.

There needs to be an option to have the galaxy map display in 2D on a flat screen the same way it does when you are not using a VR headset for those of us who want to use VR but dont want to have to put up with bad implimentaions of it.

The rest of the game is superb in VR, the galaxy map is terrible and the fact the FD still wont put in an option to let us use it the same way it normally works is just another example of them ignoring player feedback about how the game works and things that need fixing while happily adding in aliens that don't do much to add the actual gameplay.

But it is a joy to use for many.... myself included. If you have issues with it then you have it setup wrong. Once configured correctly it works great and is as intuitive as flying your ship, it's so useful to have all of the games binds on my HOTAS - the Galmap included. The VR implimentation of the Galmap is far from terrible. The only flaw is people expecting these binds to be configured as default, which they are not.

My only critism in regard to the Galmap is the lack of an onscreen keyboard for typing in system names... not really a deal breaker though. The less time spent blindly searching for my mouse and keyboard - the better.

I've mapped everything to my HOTAS and yes, it IS a joy to use for me. I love love love using the realistic map and looning out for special stars while exploring. And also the filtered map (for economies, habitated systems etc etc) is a joy to use and see all the systems in 3D, interconnected with each other... it's really outerworldish.

Seriously, I lost about an hour once because I was just soaring along my set way, looking for interesting stuff. And even the soundeffects are very immersive... when they fade out when you zoom out, to the sizzling sound stars make when you get closer to them.

TL;DR: no problem navigating the map, and actually a joy to use.

I just can agree. Spend some time with the setup and getting used to it, and like with the rest of your ship, you don't wanna use a screen no more. Added kbd support would be a cherry on the cream, but it's not much an issue. If I look for systems by name, I probably had to look them on eddb anyhow. ;) Also, the system map (not the galaxy map, which is fine) could be a bit quicker in terms of cursor movement. But that's all of criticism I can bring up for Frotnier's UI design. It's pretty well done.

This must be the 30th thread about this.
I've given help for using the Galaxy Map in a lot of them. I'm giving up.

Not wanting to sound overly rude but what about using the search function? And what about asking for help if you don't understand something instead of just stating "Galaxy is impossible to navigate in VR" as if it was a fact?

The Galaxy map is great if you understand how to use it which has been explained over and over. Demanding to turn a 3D map into a 2D display in VR just because you insist of using an unsuitable tool (Mouse) for selecting stuff in a 3D environment is just madness.

I'm with you on this. I can't seem to understand why people are having such a problem with the galaxy map. I bound my hotas to the galaxy control and it works great. Only complaint from my end is when you have to type in a name in the search box. But I solved that by using voice attack and spelling out vocally phonetics. Works like a charm.

Agreed these threads pop up so reguarly its untrue. A simple search would fix the problem for most, maybe a sticky is needed....

Was just going to post a new thread on this before finding this one ;) So I take it the answer is - give up trying to use the mouse, and bind "flight controls" to movement in the galaxy map? Once done, is it easy to select stars, enter the system map, and set routes / bookmarks?

Anything that should be considered regarding controls for the system map, or do these follow the controls for the galaxy map?

Like others here I would have preferred a mouse based 2D projection for the galaxy map, as I only use it for function and not 3D visuals. I'm sure I can work around it though.

Yes, and make sure 'Grid' is enabled actually in the Galmap - far right tab. I believe the system map controls are the same as the galmap ones, make sure you set up zoom in/out binds as zooming out speeds up the sysmap navigation, then you zoom back in on your target.

I feel your pain. FWIW, my preferred mappings (T16000 stick & throttle) are:

Camera pitch/yaw - ministick
Translate x&y - joystick
Translate z-axis - stick twist
Zoom axis - throttle rocker

Those are the important ones.

Once you get into the habit of adjusting your zoom level correctly, you can get pretty slick at flying the selector to a star of interest. Not as slick as 2d m/kb, but nowhere near as bad as vr m/kb. I would pay heavily to get a proper Touch interface for the galaxy map but I'm not holding my breath.

Unfortunately, that won't work for me. I don't use a full HOTAS; I use a joystick (with only 12 buttons) and VoiceAttack (since the keyboard won't fit on my keyboard tray when I have the joystick on it.

What I'd really like to see is a 2D option for the galactic map in VR, so I could use my mouse normally to select stuff.

Here is my Hotas setup if it helps. Edit (this is for the thrustmaster t flight hotas x.

I agree with the other sentiments on this thread that, once mapped to a HOTAS, there is no more elegant or convenient way to navigate the galaxy map. It's a breeze.

But if you're using just a joystick, as you are, you may be running into the same problem I did when I was only on a joystick: For whatever reason, in my case, the hat wasn't released from whatever bonds it was bound to elsewhere in the control setup..... So trying to use the hat to move the cursor on a flat plane was frustrating to no end. Then I discovered that all you need to do is assign a modifier (in my case, I used Shift), and then the hat works like a charm for moving the cursor around. I'm not saying that will be a cure for everyone, but for me, that was the final barrier to fully utilizing the joystick in the map. Once I found that, everything worked perfectly!

Beyond that, once you have a HOTAS system, you'll be able to fly through the map with the greatest of ease, although you'll still need to work out a typing system that works for you when you have to search for that elusive system....

I hope this helps!
