Title: Hundreds leave in aid of Jaques Station

Content:

With war between the Federation and the Empire looming over our corner of the galaxy, and the added possibility of an alien threat, a group of intrepid explorers have banded together to head off into the black and help establish the birth of a new way of life out among the stars. Over 300 pilots from all across civilized space have signed up to take part in the largest convoy ever assembled; designated the August Exodus - A Jaunt to Jaques.

Convoy 1, made up of 250 pilots, launched from the Ocshooit system on July 24th and are expected to reach Jaques Station with the badly needed supplies he has requested within two weeks. Convoy 2 is still being formed and almost 60 more pilots have signed up to it so far. The second convoy departs on August 15th.

It is hoped that this monumental effort by so many pilots will not only bring Jaques back up to full operational power, but also see in the birth of a new colony in and around the Colonia Nebula, where Jaques is currently located.

Title : A road to a new dawn.

Content :

Official press release.

"Thousands of pilots are involved to aid Jaques Station, since Jaques' call for aid. Many factions are have gotten involved in order to see the station fully operational again. A large number of the involved pilots also has the desire to see a new settlement movement beginning around Jaques Station.
We, The Wolf Society are determined to participate in this momentum since the station was found by Cmdr Cly. One of our pilots was sent to join the station barely a week after it was discovered, with a full cargo of meta-alloys. Since then, a small team has formed around him in response to the call of Jaques.
We have seen the tremendous generosity aroused by this call and that makes us optimistic. The galaxy is populated by benevolent persons. It is this spirit that may avoid the escalating war between the Empire and the Federation. We, The Wolf Society, will do everything in our power to promote the spirit of peace, harmony and altruism,
and strongly hope that Colonia Nebula, as most of the pilots involved in this adventure have started to call the vicinity of Jaques Station, will be the starting point of a new dawn for human kind."

Title: Alien Declaration of War?

Early last week, Cannon group announced a major breakthrough in the study of the so called "Unknown Probes". Since then, many enthusiasts both professional and amateur alike have posed many theories regarding the meaning of the mysterious symbol hidden in the probe's transmission, but a significant number say that researchers are ignoring another more critical part of the message. Many who have heard recordings of the transmission claim to hear a phrase in the otherwise unintelligible noise such as "We are Here" and "You will find us here". Many contemporary researchers claim that this is just a case of hearing what isn't there, similar to seeing a shape in a cloud. One claim, however, is proving harder to simply dismiss as coincidence.

One group of independent commanders claim to have used more sophisticated sound filtering technology allowing them to hear what they claim is a message in mores code. The message, they claim, is "War is Coming" repeated over and over again. Although the group was unable to provide substantiating evidence, the claim has gathered the attention of several members of the Cannon Research group.

One thing is certain, both the Federation and the Empire seem to believe that armed conflict is a real possibility based on their recent campaigns to bolster their militaries. Exactly who or what that conflict will be with remains to be seen.

Title: Ship in a Bottle

Description:

Alarmed at the escalation of political rhetoric and military tension in Merope, Utopian officials have revealed work on what some observers have called a 'doomsday ark'.

Using technology pioneered in Antal with the virtual 'Sukhavati' commune, engineers have created a novel take on the ancient generation ship design. Instead of a vast spacecraft, compact mainframes have been housed in a small probe and populated with Sim Archive neural patterns running inside a shared simulation.

System architect Zita Ingersoll detailed the unusual project:

"As diplomatic efforts to avert a galactic conflict prove fruitless, Utopia must act before it is too late.

Compelled by simulations predicting disaster and belligerence from Federal and Imperial forces, we must use innovative methods to preserve our culture before it is lost to catastrophe.

Once deployed, this probe will safeguard Utopias finest minds and technology, ready to return should humanity fall in the uncertain times ahead."

Great, thanks

Hold fire on the second part for now - we need to finalise the departure point of the 15th August expedition!

Will submit part 2 as soon as we know.

Cheers

Could I possibly request feedback on why mine didn't make the cut? I'm not complaining at all mind you, I'm genuinely interested in what could have been done better so that I can make a better article next time.

The guys can't provide in depth feedback on every submission - time is a factor, as is whether your story might perhaps foreshadow or contradict any that are planned.

Best thing to do is to compare yours to others which do get accepted; check word counts and whether you're perhaps writing a story you *can't* own or which involves big characters from the factions. Think like a journalist, too, submitting a story to a local news orgabisation that will be syndicated across all.

I don't know if any of this applies, but by trying to stick to it, you'll get 'tuned in' to how Ian and his team work and more of your stories will be accepted because you'll write them the right way.

Hope that helps.

Some observations:

Its 227 words long, which is too long normally unless you have the luck to be published on full fat Galnet. Writing longer stories is only warranted if you have previous Galnet stories published and know you are part of the main Galnet 'thread' (like the barnacles, Halsey etc). In my time of writing I've never gone over 150 words and I've used that limit for both Galnet and local news.

Getting on Galnet is hard! Remember that your story cannot conflict with FDs. I had a story rejected as it predicted the probes EMP behavior a whole month before it was discovered. Aluminium foil optional ;)

The story itself is really good, foreshadowing is always fun to write.

For advice on fine-tuning, try here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ElitePress/

Its a group that tries to maximize the potential of the story before you publish it, and point out any flaws / dodgy grammar & spelling.

The last piece of advice is to not give up! It can be hard when something you worked on is not used, but just keep on writing and work through it. Sometimes its good to put systems you would like it published in as well as Galnet too- just having Galnet on its own is a risky gamble.

I've been meaning to ask why there has been no news out about Antal's capture of Maia in powerplay a few cycles back and The Empire's (or Arissa Lavigny Duval's) capture of Beta Hydri. One of the founding members of the Federation. Is there a certain divide between powerplay events and canon lore?

This ought to have been big news but seemed to be largely glossed over in the build up to confrontation at Maia.

Would it be alright if I wrote an article about it?

Both had some local news articles published about them. Maia actually had several written by CMDR Rubbernuke, and Beta Hydri had at least one written by CMDR Noxa.

Could I possibly request feedback on why mine didn't make the cut?

As noted in the guidelines at the top of this thread, we typically only give feedback if there are small, objective issues with a submission (e.g. mentioning a particular character or organisation that we intend to use in our own story, or neglecting to include a location for publication). Given the finite amount of time at our disposal, it isn’t possible for us to enter into a discussion about more complex or subjective issues.

With that said, the advice from LordZoltan and Rubbernuke is sound!

You're right. I've just been linked to them. Thanks. Just kinda wished it was bigger news, y'know.

Maybe because it's a slap in the face of the Federation player base? What would the news look like?

"Due to a bug the Empire took control of Beta Hydri, founding member of the Federation and home of its Navy. There was no way to prevent that. Lol, kthxbye"

Oh there was a way to prevent that. Same way all of our expansion that the Feds cared about have been prevented.
You could argue that the whole of PowerPlay is bugged
