Game FPS

Hello

Has anyone else noticed a problem with FPS on the PC? My ED, with everything maxed except SS set to 1.0 running at 3440x1440 (100MHz), gets a steady 100+ fps. Today, with nothing changed, it's getting like 30fps with drops into the teens. Running horribly!

Just me? Could be something on my machine, but I've added or changed nothing since last night when it was fine.

Desktop. I7 4960X 3.6, no OC, 1080Ti (temp about 64c in game), 32GB G-Skills RAM, Predator monitor with G-SYNC running at 100MHz. Running game off 2- 4TB in RAID 0 10K drives. Game has ran fine for years on this machine, always gets over 100fps. Today, logged in and only getting in the 30fps range, with drops to like 17fps. Nothing has changed, no updates, no graphics driver, no nothing since last I played last night, when it was getting it's normal 100+fps. All settings are on max with the exception of Super Samp, which has always been set at 1.0. No clue. Must be something going on with my machine, I have heard no other complaints. I did a speed test with game on and off, and off, getting nearly 350mbps / 24mbps. Game on, getting more like 70mbps / 20mbps.

Do you really think that's the issue? I swear, last night was getting the normal fps, no issues. Went to bed and fired up game this afternoon and seriously, the fps counter is jumping all over the place, going from like a low of 17fps to a high of like 80fps. Normally, I get a pretty steady 100fps, rarely a dip below that, today, it's all over and just can tell the game is choppy, stutters, it's horrible and unplayable :( Nothing has changed with my computer, same machine is was last night. NO Windows updates, graphics driver updates, nothing... wow, this could be the end of over 2500 hours of grinding my butt off in this game if THIS is what I can expect from now on. ED would be done for me.

I can't say its not your machine. It SHOULD not be. I'm not having any issues with either of mine, other than longer instances load times. I would like you to do a good reboot and load it back up. Check your Task manager for GPU and CPU usage and see what your hard drives are doing. Another killer is if Windows update decided to kick in or another background thing. You have a decent enough cpu i dont think that would be your bottle neck but the 2 hard drives could be. Recommend a cheap 500gb SSD with sata or m.2 if your MB supports it for game usage. My desktop with a 7200 rpm drive gets funky every now and then with ED but my Dell laptop with m.2 ssds could care less and it less spec'd than my Desktop. Heck its even running nvidia quadro p2000 lol.

Let me know what you find. but i do not see the game slowing your system down, its not a 2 way simulation like ( space engineers, dual universe and the like ) .

Almost certainly not.

Assuming this is persisting through client restarts, my first recommendation is usually to delete the contents of the NVIDIA shader cache folder (usually in "ProgramData\NVIDIA Corporation\NV_Cache\" which may be hidden) and the game's GPUWorkTable.xml file (in the main Product\elite-dangerous-64\) then restart the game and allow it to rebuild the cache.

You may also want to make sure that there haven't actually been any updates to your system (check the Windows update history), and if there have that they completed without errors or issues.

died in your fighter before? that s an old bug. as a temporary workaround open the chat box and close it again. :)

Have encountered that bug, but haven't had it persist through a client restart.

I deleted all the cache files in ProgramData\NVIDIA Corporation\NV_Cache that I could, but the system is holding onto about 6 that will not let me delete. Also, no idea where the "GPUWorkTable" would be located. Checked everywhere. Any more defined path you might have? Thanks!

Those are from applications currently running. If you've closed out of Elite: Dangerous, it's files will be deleteable.

Exact install location varies with where you, or the client for the storefront you purchased the game, put it.

It's always called GpuWorkTable.xml, shouldn't be hidden (file search should turn it up) and will always be in the same directory as EliteDangerous64.exe, which is the game's primary binary/executable.

Thanks but I am unable to delete ALL the files in the NV Cache. Rebooted and tried again but there's like 6 that will not let me remove. I did find and remove the GPUWork file and restarted game. It went through the rebuild process but same exact thing, fps is jumping all over, game is choppy as hell, stutters. It's un-playable. There were no Windo3ws updates, or other updates between when I got done playing last night around midnight, turned off my computer, and when I loaded it this morning and went into game to fine just a horrible fps. Dunno. Appreciate the hellp but maybe this is a wake up call that I have been doing nothing but playing this game for far too long :(

I have an Adaptec RAID card, with 1GB of cache. I have 2xEVO Pros in RAID 0 for OS and the 10K drives also in RAID 0 for games, plus another 2x2TB RAID 0 for 3D stuff and video editing files. I tried games off the EVO SSD drives and the 2 2TB in RAID-0 drives are FAR faster than the SSD in RAID, have not tried stand alone SSD, but now we're talking complete computer rebuild for ED. Ha! Na, I'd be done with the game if that's what it takes, at this point. Something happened between last night and today, and I don't think it happened to my computer.

Thanks but I am unable to delete ALL the files in the NV Cache.

You almost certainly got the cache files for the game, so anything left probably isn't an issue. The files you can't delete are probably from applications that have some sort of hardware accelerated UI that start with your system.

Appreciate the hellp but maybe this is a wake up call that I have been doing nothing but playing this game for far too long :(

It should also be a wake up call that something is wrong somewhere.

If you can verify the game files with the launcher, but the problem persists, then the issue is with your system. The game hasn't changed overnight either, and most people aren't having performance issues. Can't say if it's a hardware or software problem, but things don't happen without a cause.

Understood. I did do the file verify in Steam, just got done re-installing the latest NVIDIA driver, clean install. Will see if that does anything. If not, might just reformat my system and start with Steam and the game and see what I get. Thanks! ;)

One thing I will add... when running the game, my entire computer bogs down. It's not horrible but noticeable for sure. Until today, I was able to alt-tab in and out of the game and do other stuff, no problem. I could be playing the game at over 100fps and watching YouTube videos at same time, or even have Premiere Pro open and doing some video editing, or Blender and rendering out something... now, it's alt-tab and bog down. Also, in the game, I dropped ALL settings to LOW, has not effect of fps, counter is all over the place, from low 30's to 80's, and pretty much stuck around 40 to 50fps. Crazy. I checked to see if any updates were installed and Adobe Acrobat CC was installed, or updated, today, that was it and can't uninstall that update, not an option. Can't see how that could cause this, but who knows.

I suppose you already have checked Task Manager and sorted the task table by CPU load?
Yes sir. I see no abnormal GPU, CPU or Memory usage. All within normal limits. I've checked Performance and see not heavy hit on drives, Ethernet connection, anything. All is as normal as ever. The game is playable, just not at the 100+fps I had. It's now fluctuating between 30 fps and 50fps, as though somehow Super Sampling is set to 2.0, but it's not. I I jumped 7 jumps to Ryder to ENG a PH, and found my trip there was in the 100fps, until I dropped at a star or station and back down to dismal fps, Bizarre. Maybe it will clear up, and maybe it does have something to do with FDEV and releasing this game free to LOTS of people now logging in, I juts don't know enough about how that works. IF I play 9in Solo, same fps issue. IF it doesn't clear itself in a few days, then I am going to reformat this machine. I usually reformat my computers at least once a year, but this one has been rock solid for a long time. I guess maybe it's time. Probably time for a new system anyway, but I am kind of waiting on the 3090 Ti Super. I suppose I can get to buying my parts and just use the 1080 Ti until there's a 3090 Ti. Very upsetting to have it working 100% fine, shutdown the system, start up the system and find your fps has been cut in half, with no reasonable reason. I know I get about 40 to 100fps is Red Dead 2. Guess I will check that and see what I have now. Try to narrow it down. Seems to be ED though, something about it is putting a hit on my computer. Computer is find, until I start ED, then bog, low fps, even alt-tabbing out just to open Chrome was a snap, now it's much slower to open. es me off.

This is PERF MON and Task Manager with game running in background. Nothing taxing the system

Strange. That's not even struggling.

Just for the record (as you may have guessed) I can't see anything like that. Playing in Open, in VR (HP reverb), and currently have SteamVRs monitoring gadget running. Still running green (90 FPS+) most of the time, bright blue (CPU throttling, reprojection active) on jumps or when entering an instance, dark blue (GPU throttling, reprojection active) in stations or on planets as usual. All within the usual fluctuations, comparing last evening with two weeks ago.
