Game loses something by not forcing Open play

Because there's no offline I would like to play solo online occasionally. I play open mostly, just so that I can meet other players from time to time (although it's not a priority).

What sort of 'limit'? I'd be in favor of requiring a full log out/in to mode-switch, for instance.

If there must be mode switching to open, I would like to see at least a cooldown. So it can be easily done, but not constantly throughout the day. I think it would be fair; allowing people to have their choice of modes while also mostly eliminating the ability for a player to use the mode switching as a vehicle to grief others throughout the day.

This is obviously a discussion that the community wants to have. You are welcome to not participate. In fact, I fail to understand why you feel compelled to show up and do nothing but moan on each page of this thread. Why should an issue be censored because you do not care to discuss it? Others do.

I am positive FD will not separate the two modes of play
.
1. They have said the game is this way by design
2. Separating solo from open play would require a second set of servers and would negate some of the reasons given for the loss of the 'offline' game
3. Removal of solo completely would again negate more of the reasons given for the loss of the offline game and probably result in a substantial loss of customers
.
The whole thread is most likely a moot point and as already been discussed to death many times, therefore this applies

Are we there now ? Or will we carry on this pointless merry go round another few pages ?

I was in Sol yesterday. I targeted another Human CMDR and tried to talk, but got nothing back. Looks like we are (sometimes) too busy doing what we are doing in space to be social...

That, plus the really poor communication tools we've been given in the game, along with a focus on supporting HOTAS controls and the Oculus Rift where the keyboard is invisible. Not every Rift user can touch type, and not every HOTAS user wants to take their hands off stick and throttle, in case it's not really chat the other Commander is interested in. Many HOTAS users don't even have the keyboard within reach, due to limited desk space.

The game badly needs some canned call and response text that can be mapped to HOTAS buttons, so we can at least initiate the first stages of chat between ships without having to type something.

"Talked to death" because there are many people who care about this game that have concerns and they want to be heard, just like everyone else here.

As I said before, I recognize the validity of the argument for solo and private play and I'm fine with those modes being in place. Like others, I am concerned about the potential for abuse that exists if some limit is not imposed on the mode switching.

I doubt many of the people posting in this thread plan to take advantage of this, and as evidenced from the replies which do not recognize this potential, but that does not make the concern any less valid. The posters here do not represent the entirety of the future playerbase of the game.

I see myself as attempting to protect the integrity of the game from a threat that many fail to recognize. The failure to recognize a threat early does not prove it will not manifest when conditions are appropriate.

I find patently offensive the tone of intolerance for other viewpoints that has emerged in this thread. The unproductive cartoon troll posts and whines about the mods not censoring this thread are embarrassing for us all.

Let me put it this way then. There has not been one concern, not one argument, not one opinion put forward in this thread that has not been put forward in ALL the other threads on this same subject. The reason you are getting the types of replies you are annoyed about is maybe because those making them are exasperated by the fact that, instead of looking these threads up and reading the discussions and following the conclusions, you feel the need to create a whole new thread and go over it all again with the same arguments and the same eventual conclusions. At least please read one or two of these old threads and if you can come up with something new, something that adds to the debate THEN come back and post it. Otherwise just leave the poor old nag to rest in piece.

Yes, its a bit of an oversight at present. The ED universe seems quite sterile. It would also be nice if there was a simple way to 'establish a connection to nearby pilots' to communicate via VOIP.

Agree, but fuzzy, the word is moot! Mute is definitely an oxymoron when applied to this thread... :D

I did not participate in the prior discussions, perhaps you did. I want to participate in this one and that is a choice that FD has seen fit to provide me and which I will continue to exercise. Please don't attempt to dictate to me how I should go about my business.

If you find these discussions tiresome and you have nothing to contribute, you are free to spend your time in the hundreds of other available discussions instead of popping in here to anti-socially berate others whom are trying to carry on with a debate.

Oh come down of your high horse a bit will you? That first paragraph of yours comes over as pompous in the extreme. It is YOU who have nothing to contribute. Nothing you have said yet in any of your posts has advanced this debate one iota. But rather than spend your time looking back over the previous discussions to maybe gain an insight into the arguments so that you can maybe come up with something NEW, you seem to prefer to waste the time of others by having them yet again explaining the conclusions and the reasons for those conclusions. And before you go off on some 'then why do you take part' crusade. I, and others, do so in the hope that the failed arguments you and others come up with are not taken by casual readers as valid concerns. This situation in the game is a done deal and there is a mountain of evidence on these forums that back that statement up. Try looking for it instead of pontificating on things you haven't even bothered to research.

I'd be OK with a cooldown too as long as it isn't too long. So you arent 'stuck' in one mode for an entire evening's play session.

Mulitple commander saves will be a much greater ganking/griefing tool for those who want to go on a killing spree then log out to another commander to avoid the bounty hunters. Seen it happen in Lineage2 and many other open pvp games. Log in ruin someones day then log out before his mates come to hand you your butt.
.
The problem is people have the potential to enjoy ruining other peoples enjoyment for there own...it's the internet and all games have their share of griefers and gankers no matter what the ruleset/server type.
.
I would be OK with one game mode but with the ability to flag on/off which I am sure wouldn't be acceptable either...it is the availability of targets in question I think. However it would bring everyone into the same world adding to it's richness which was the original reason given...It was denied it was just to have more unwilling targets to shoot at.
.
Edit: A pve flag would be a bit immersion breaking so I could say pay 100 credits per day to the pilots federation marking me a s protected. You can shoot me if you want but at the cost of all non anarchy systems marking you as wanted....seems fair, you can kill me with real consequences if you choose to. The game will survive and prosper I will be protected from griefers and gankers...fact still remains ED will not change a core system

I'll come off my horse if you descend from your towering ignorance where you sit in judgment of all others on this forum. Who are you to say which concern is valid and which is not? Why should my concern be any less valid than yours? This thread does not require your participation. If you feel compelled to participate then so be it but please do not act as though I am manipulating you to do so. If my "crusade" to ensure that ED has integrity and is free of easily abused mechanics causes you distress than I am forced to question your own integrity and motives.

There is no need for you to turn this into some us vs them civil war. We're all on the same side here and I'm sure we all have an interest in making sure ED is the best game it can be. I am not your enemy, I am your neighbor. I do not need your approval to occupy this forum or to participate in its discussions. Please refrain from trying to harass and grief me away from a place and an activity where I am no less welcome than you to participate.

You are still missing the point and by this stage this must be deliberate. Who am I to say which concern is valid and which is not? Nobody, but then I'm not trying to. What I AM trying to do is to draw your attention to the fact that it is the numerous previous debates on this very topic that have decided what is and what is not a valid concern. Why are you so stubborn in wanting to simply rehash tired old arguments instead of doing a little research and trying to come up with something new?

You might have noticed that i am no longer debating the issue of PvP, PvE, Solo, All or whatever. By now i am simply curious to know why it is you want to continue to flail around in ignorance when your own, and much stronger arguments have been put forward and discussed and resolved. Why are you so reluctant to go look? Could it be because if you do you might find out that there is no longer a debate to be had? That it has all been put rest not once but many times before?

Since I got ED, I have never played in open play.. All my time with ED has been in solo mode. However, It is true that at some point I will go into the open arena, and yes I will have a "fighting chance" at survival.. It's bad enough to have to grind for hours on end to get any meaningful gains. I would not participate if I also had to endure all the hot shot griefers on top of the grind as mandatory.

As a defensive trader and miner. I have no intentions of saving up and making an ubber ship of doom only to hunt in open world as some assume will occur. But when I do go into open play. It will be with a ship that has maximum shielding and armor so that I can at least have a chance to survive and find a group to join. But I will do so when I am ready.. not because it is imposed as the only option.

The current model is favorable for my choices of risk management..

I imagine this is frustrating to the would be space villain that would only serve to prolong my ability to obtain a ship capable of defensive endurance.

But if I am to be hunted down for the sole purpose of gratifying a kid bent on kill count bragging rights.. It will not be while I am trying to do a cargo run in a sidewinder.. :D

... If my "crusade" to ensure that ED has integrity and is free of easily abused mechanics ....

That bit right there is your problem, all games ever made have tried every way conceivable to prevent cheaters / exploiters / griefers from ruining the game play experience of others - nothing to date has worked.
Cheaters will always find ways to cheat, even if it just plain alt+f4 to prevent a loss to them and their combat card. Exploiters always find ways to get the upper hand with flaws in a game and use it to their advantage and griefers in PvP games and PvE games are very creative over how they can ruin your day.

Any "crusade" is pointless on those points.

And the topic at hand does nothing to stop any of the above, but it does limit the honest players.

Clearly there is a debate to be had if this thread has reached 55 pages within such a short span of time. Many people in this community do not consider this issue resolved and they wish to be heard. I am not concerned with previous discussions, I am concerned with this current discussion. I would like to participate in the discussion and express myself and as I said I will continue to do so despite your bullying. I find it dubious that you are so eager to have me silenced and control the topics of conversation on this forum. Without presenting an argument, you have repeatedly attempted to shout people down and I consider your behavior to be in direct conflict with the spirit of this forum which exists to give the playerbase a place to express their thoughts on the game.

Leopard, I have a question for you, and it's also addressed to everyone else who has been insisting the game must either force everyone into All Online or lock them into separate modes forever.

What are you going to do after the 16th, when the game releases with the current design? At what point does this just become tilting at windmills?

I understand there are some who would like this game to be different. But complaints about the design, this late in the development process, is about as productive as going over to a Blizzard WoW forum and demanding that all the PvE servers be shut down, and everyone shifted over to PvP-only servers.

I have some complaints about ED's design too, like the way Exploration has been nerfed (no hyperlink discovery) and the dumbed-down air combat flight model and speed caps. But I've let it go. I know the game won't change to be the way I want it, so I'll either find ways to have fun (which I'm currently doing) or I'll move on to something else.

So by your logic, no steps should be taken to prevent situations which are obviously available to exploit? Perhaps the developers should just leave the myriad bugs that have allowed excessive multiplication of currency? I fail to see how this will result in a product that will have integrity and longevity.

I reject your attempt to cheapen my argument by completely mis-stating it. I have stated that I would prefer no mode switching, but I recognize and agree that the desire exists for it. I do not wish to deprive people of the option, rather, I wish it to have fair and reasonable limits placed on it. I believe that doing so will provide the greatest good for the largest group of ED players by protecting them from an obviously exploitable mechanic.

Your entire "discussion" is based on a single flawed and unproven premise that "Solo" mode is easier than "Open", whilst carefully avoiding the fact that Open has the potential to be far safer than Solo; also best not to mention Private groups as well. As you've said you're not interested in the previous discussion on the matter (which probably run into the thousands of posts), then let me ask you this: prove your premise to be correct.
