General / Off-Topic Game of Thrones

Best series yet.

Gutted that they only do 10 episodes per series, It could easily be twice that many and still be brilliant.

Tempted to read the books up to where the series has just finished, but I'm not sure if it would be halfway through and the temptation to continue would be too great.

Will give it a few weeks and start from the beginning again.

T.J, you can read all the books up to the semi-last book. All of the material in the series so far covers up to A Dance with Dragons: After the Feast (this is part 1 of a 2 parter book - they are both sizable books). I think they've basically got material from the last book to cover in the next two series.

Yeah, just be warned that there's a big reveal at the very end of book 3 that we haven't seen in the show yet. I (and many other book readers, I suspect) was expecting season 4 to end with that cliffhanger, but I guess they're saving that for S5.

Eh? I'm confused.

They've already covered the story to A Dance with Dragons: After the feast - with the Red Wedding etc. What reveal are you on about? Add reply as spoilers pls.

Good call, I completely forgot about that! T.J. - don't read the epilogue if you want the TV show to stay ahead of the books. ;)

Interesting article about the last episode here, which echoes much of my own thoughts whilst watching and my general feeling watching the show. Major end of series spoilers! Also spoilers on differences between the book and the show (but ones worth knowing).

For the most part I've enjoyed the series a lot more than the books - it condenses a lot of what I saw as fluff in the books (so much food detail!!) and some of the changes have been very welcome. But the extra layers of misogyny on an already unequal story, particularly violence and **** inserted purely for shock value, is really making me reluctant to watch any more. Both the Cersei **** scene and the strangling of Shae were deeply uncomfortable to watch, and have turned off two of the most interesting characters.

I 'met' him (Mr Martin) in Zagreb/Croatia at some book signing. My girlfriend dragged me to him and bought me his first three Game of Thrones books that were out at the time and I got them personalized and signed. I didn't know the guy at all even though I was kind off fantasy/sci-fi fan (books then) so I was not overly enthousiastic at meeting him. But after starting to read... How this guy writes just blew me away. He is my favorite auther together with the late Ian M Banks for sci-fi (we should have some culture like things in ED now I think of it, not just me using character names :D). Like General Systems Vehicles, habitats to a billion people crossing between stars? Like a factory ship, would be nice for trading.

I read the link...

...just seemed to be political correctness and the need to transpose our modern sensibilities onto a fictional world. Is it wrong to have a written world where women are treated like second class citizens, objects, slaves, just because we've (supposedly) risen above that? Fiction does not have to be, and should not have to be, an allegory for the real world and we should be able to have portrayals that are at odds with where we are now... or where we aspire to be now I should say, seeing as many atrocities still exist. If people are dumb enough to think the TV show is saying "killing prostitutes is okay" or "non-consensual, forced sex* is okay if the person falls in love with you afterwards" then they should be looking at themselves, not the show. Accept intellectual and moral responsibility as a viewer.

*damn swear filter!

Well...

Why so many additions of this nature though? I can accept it as part of the franchise, it's not a nice world, etc. But why add *extra* **** and violence against women to the TV series? Is this just for shock value? Pretty disgusting if so in my opinion. The Cersei **** scene was originally consensual sex - who decided it should be **** instead, and why was that chosen? In isolation it might not be so bad but the pattern of changes is disturbing.

In the books Tyrion is one of the few characters you really feel sorry for. Now he's a prostitute-strangler... In the books Jaime goes through a path to redemption after his hand is chopped off. Now he's a defiling , and with no visible affect from this change on his personality or on the victim. This honestly makes it very hard for me to watch the show. Perhaps if I hadn't read the books I wouldn't notice so much.

Edit: Hmm, and it seems I can't talk about Game of Thrones without certain plot elements hitting the profanity filter! :p

Fair points...

It's been a while since I read the books so couldn't recall the details so yes, there was no need for the Cersei scene. Tyrion did kill Shae though, didn't he, don't tell me I've forgotten that much? And pretty much for the reasons in the show - her "betrayal" of him, boffing his old man whom he hated, etc.

So I'll give you the Cersei one - unnecessary and, being so, it does cast a shadow on the other things one might consider unnecessary, even though they were in the books, more or less.

Oh, hmm, seems my memory is faulty - I don't remember him killing Shae in the books, but it seems he did indeed! Just not in such a dramatic fashion.

I don't have anything to contribute, but everyone is posting spoiler tags so I thought I would too.

Oh and Hodor :D

But...

I recall that he strangles her with her father's chain of office... I may be mistaken. So just what happens on the TV show.

Hodor! :)
