Why do you need an end game, unless you want the game to end? The whole point for me of Elite is it doesn't have to end. Unless you're a publisher who wants to sell more games why would you include an end game?
The moment I first flew I was happy. For me the end game comes when the servers close. The galaxy exists for me to explore and I am content with that.
I can see no reason to even mention the term end-game in connection with ED. To think of it as a game where you grind up to a certain level (of ship, money, rank, whatever) and then start doing the important stuff is to entirely miss the point. And is the reason why a chunk of the paying customers are unhappy with the game. Conditioned by WoW and its ilk that the way to go is to level like a madman up to max then look around for stuff to do, they grind mindlessly for hours to get to an Anaconda then wonder why they are bored. I'm even inclined to think that the triple Elite competition was possibly a mistake because it's likely to just encourage people to burn out. Even in WoW and Anarchy Online I've seen so many people who took the quickest (and usually the most boring and repetitive) route to the top then just got bored and gave up.
I want to fly a spaceship. Because it's fun. So I get ED, I get a DK2, and now whenever I feel like it I can strap on a spaceship and go fly it. It's awesome. I can kill stuff, I can trade, I can explore. I can just sit and goggle at the wonders of the universe. I have no special desire to get a Python or Ananconda any time soon. I may go crazy to get a Fer-de-Lance, who knows. But I'm certainly not going to just grind like a madman to get to some imaginary, non-existent end-game. Had enough of that in WoW thanks.
There is no "win", only "play".
The earn credits > buy new ship cycle is ONLY there if your mindset puts it there.
I've been playing since Alpha 2.0 and I'm still only flying a Cobra MkIII. I don't feel this need to upgrade, to get a bigger ship. I'm fine as I am and I'm having fun from exploring and mining occasionally.
You don't need the biggest ship, just play the game and have fun and try to get out of the current generations mindset that the only thing to do in a game is grinding for something better.
There's a whole universe out there.. Go explore it.
"A whole GALAXY (not Universe...) and whats the point in exploring it? It serves no purpose. Lets go take forever to fly in system to different colored balls to get some flavor text and pennies for Cr. Exploring has no depth, factions and rep has no depth, trading has no depth. Nothing in ED has depth. "
If you say that, why did you buy Elite?
Didn't know Elite means a game with absolutely no depth to anything? Stop trying to justify and defend a game that's clearly still in beta stages (and Alpha stage in terms of content and features). Most people agree that this game needs a whole lot more meaningful content and more depth to whats already here.
Give me reasons to do stuff in game. A majority of what is currently available to do in game is monotonous and tedious at best. Why does enriching the game with more depth and better things to do scare some of you so badly?
And of course, just quote that one bit of text from my post instead of commenting on my suggestion of outpost management and building. Good one.

I was just so horrified with that, that I couldn't even read the rest
maybe I can post on Galnet that I will offer jobs of trading and enforcement to players for Cr or to have them join my Corporation and help make it prosper. Maybe once I've got things going really well I can build an orbital space station near a planet and have people colonize my system. Then once planetary landings happen I could build a colony and maybe eventually a large city on the planet. Other players can trade, work and try and stop my progress with all of this. Cr could be used for all sorts of things that aren't weapons or ships. Paying wages to your extraction crews (NPC and players), patrol crews. Maybe put up a bounty mission for a notorious NPC or player pirate. Upgrade my outpost or orbital station to attract specfic type of NPC's and players or to serve a specific goal for my Corporation. I of course, could do any of the roles listed above myself to have a more hands on approach too.
Could even at some point send out a construction ship to start expanding to other nearby systems.
Well, you - like several others in this thread - obviously didn't read my initial post either. I spot a trend...
I am going to be frank, no one cares about your post
There are no long-term goals to set for yourself really, other than endlessly grind money for the sake of it, or exploration.
You are indeed Frank...
And your last name is Spencer.
There are no boring games, only boring gamers.
My childhood hero!
