I have vague information which may or may not be the answer here. If it's not the news they will be announcing it seems it won't be long before it is.

I spoke with an individual who knows an employee at Frontier. This person stated Frontier has a team specifically working on Planetary landings on the side and
that they are very close to finishing it.

This information was said to me before anyone mentioned they would be announcing something next month. To me it kind of fits that it could be what we will hear about.

It may not be. But it is likely if the information is true.

Take it for what it is. Someone telling me what someone else said. It would be cool though.

For me the game has dried up. I'm bored with it. We really do need something exciting at this point.

Interesting...not really what I would call hard facts by a long shot, but it does point in the same direction as other "vague information" I've picked up here and there.

Because it's in effect just spreading the sand thinner rather than putting more in... We're in a huge sandbox, but move a couple of grains of sand and you expose the bottom of the pit.

We need deeper/better game mechanics. We need tiered more involved missions. We need more depth and content in general space flight. We need more content to discover/witness while exploring.

In truth we need a massive dump of better game play/mechanics... It's long long overdue!

Oh I absolutely agree that right now the game needs more content rather than new major features. Space is feeling a bit empty and way to repetitive.

But in the (probably far) future, I believe landing on planet / moon spaceports for trade, outfit, bb, etc/ cities for passengers / factories for specialty item trading/ planet raids or attacks will add hugely to the amount of diverse content.

Its what the game is lacking severely rioght now: content to fil such a huge gameworld.

Also more mission types like salvaging, rescue, refuel, answering to distress calls, patrolling, etc. Definitely more station exteriores and interiors.

It would sort of make sense... Due for release towards the end of the year?

But my biggest fear? This enhancement adds the quantum leap forwards in depth and game play by moving us on from take X to Y, all the way to take X down to Y.

I would be satisfied if instead FD would simply introduce more assets / content in the existing game. More stations, more outposts, different interiors, more station locations, more things to find in the void, more mission types, etc. The galaxy still feels too lifeless and way too similar no matter how many populated systems you fly to.

even small stuff like having a bunch of different human voices responding to docking requests, clearing for launch, entering / exiting no-fire zone, just so that we knew the galaxy is not only inhabbited by robots. Small things can make the galaxy feel livelier.

Yep. If I'm going to be a trader then I need to feel I'm going somewhere... places to see, people to meet, etc. Not constantly fly into the same copypasted interior I've been to 100 times. A real human (voice) would also help on docking clearance

"Docking clearance granted. Enjoy your visit".
"You are clear to dock. Please be mindful of exiting craft".
"You again? Let's be more careful this time around, shall we? Clear to dock."
"Welcome back CMDR, we've got some great specials on ship outfitting at the moment. Dock safely".

You will find that all those misguided people who think the core of the game is broken and needs to be fixed before adding more stuff on top of crumbling foundations are quite a big, loud group. Quite possibly because they are right.

Indeed. Every video I see his passion and vision comes shining through. And every video has a different vision*. The reason many kickstarter backers are so disenchanted is that the vision they were sold is not what we see being built. Now, it may well be that FD intend to circle back round and do that stuff later - we don't know and, frankly, even if FD said so most of us would not believe until we see it. Once bitten, twice shy, and all that.

* Yeah, OK, that sentence was hyperbole. But it is very easy to find him saying stuff that bears no resemblance to what has been delivered.

Pretty much says it all. +1 rep.

Where do these people babbling about "all veteran players are bored and this game is broken" get their info from.

I've been here since launch and am still enjoying it a lot. I have not encountered any game breaking bugs.

Personally I hope that the announcement is about planetary landings and walking on stations. If it is, then Elite will have achieved something that EVE online promised but couldn't deliver, and star citizen reckons it may be able to do eventually if everyone upgrades their computer a lot.

David continuously impresses me within his enthusiasm for this game.

Exactly!

Small things that would make the populated space feel "populated" by people, and less "robotic".

Stuff like your examples, and warnings about war zones, or talking about mining spots, ship or module discounts, even commercials like those on radio sidewinder.

Agree.

Been playing since launch, and I still love the game, despite it being still clearly a work-in-progress.

Despite my feeling that FD have been straying a bit from the promised features, i believe tha they still want to make the incredible game that they promised.

Meanwhile, a little patience and faith is required, but by no means I ever though about leaving the game.

They don't, because they don't exist. Another straw man.

There clearly are lots of people who are bored, who think the game is too shallow, and who think there are things that break the game for them. There are equally lots of people who are perfectly happy with what they have. And lots of shades of grey in between.

We have seen lots of evidence that FD are chasing the money. Not in itself a bad thing, of course - it depends on how they choose to spend that money amongst other things. We have seen plenty of evidence that they will chase that money, even if the way they choose to do so is directly against the vision they laid out in the early part of the development of the game (as CQC is). Also not necessarily a bad thing, though you can understand why those that 'bought' (literally in many cases) that initial vision are unhappy that new stuff is being added for a different audience before FD have finished (or, to be fair, since 'finished' is unrealistic, got close to finishing) that initial vision.

Anyway, because FD are chasing the money so enthusiastically, I fully expect two announcements fairly soon. One of those I expect to be the PS4 version, probably in time for Christmas, though that does depend on the details of the deal with Microsoft for the XBox. The other I expect to be the first paid expansion, again, probably in time for Christmas. If the Gamescon announcements is one of those I will be disappointed - but not surprised - because I do still hold out some hope of them actually delivering the game they sold me on, and so would llike some more of those features. But, frankly, I expect to be disappointed again.

FD will unveil a market economy supporting a crafting industry, and story based content supporting the various game roles.

-- o wait ... .

I think the paid expansions are I while off yet, as the base game is still unfinished, could be wrong tho. My thinking: Thargoids :D

As I've stated before, I sincerely hope not! - https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=155005&p=2507323&viewfull=1#post2507323

Many areas of the game feel like little more than placeholders, with tasks, missions, occupations, general space content and exploration feeling extremely simplistic and thin a lot of the time. All that needs a huge amount of attention and content/depth added first IMHO, before we start throwing Thargoids in.

Powerplay feels like a bit of a ill-considered development to me, so that also needs to get sorted, but ideally without investing (waisting?) too much more development time on it.

FD will only get one chance to introduce Thargoids in for the first time, so lets please get the base game sorted first... And then the Thargoids can carefully come in to build upon it.

I know what you mean, and I'm all for this too...but they said it would be a "big announcement" and IMO improvements (as beneficial as they will be) wont satisfy people's expectations; I'm almost certain it will be some new content

I suspect "big announcement" can only mean an expansion.

Every time we have had a patch previously, Frontier have said something like "there will be an announcement about patch 1.x at Gamescom (or wherever)". This time they specifically have not used the word update or patch. So that leaves me thinking it can only be an expansion.

I’m guessing the ‘imperial eagle’. Basically they’re gonna duct tape a few bits onto existing ships and call them new. I’m not expecting much.

Maybe ‘Elite Mousetrap’ in which you have to run your ‘Sidewinder MkII’ (a normal Sidewinder with Ostrich legs) around a wacky board game before the trap springs and you get stuck under a net.

With the recent addition of pilots to the seats, old video "Future of Elite" and the whole vibe of "The BIG announcement" - I think it will be an expansion announcement, and this expansion will be about walking in ships and space stations.
After reading Lavecon news I have even stronger feeling about this, dunno why though.

...and do what though? Think about the gameplay we have in the core game, which really hasn't move on since (before) release...

If we can wonder around our ships & stations what will we actually do?

Given the current approach (& endorsed/embraced by Powerplay), maybe each time you walk around a circuit of a space station you can earn some credits? Or were you hoping for something a little deeper? :)

Thanks for the laugh on this rather grey Monday!

I'm pretty sure they will soon (relatively speaking) give us news regarding the first paid expansion, but people should keep something in mind.

PAX Prime is just a couple of weeks after that and maybe they want to save something for that too?

Showing of a playable build of CQC coupled with details about the next core build (1.4) might be what GamesCom is about and a few weeks later they might reveal the first expansion at PAX Prime.

Or not...just a thought...
