Why do guys think planetary landings will be devoid of content? Does anybody think when people will be landing on planets there will be nothing to do there?

You know you are right! We could assume that landing would include a slew of economy and story stimulating content. If wishes were fishes ....

Can somebody link to the reddit sock post?

EDIT: Got it

https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/3f4nn3/why_planetary_landings_wont_be_announced_at/

If Planetary Landings does happen, I'll eat a sock, I'll do it man, save this bloody post and I'll record myself consuming a sock, I still thing that it's most likely that PL won't be announced, but if it does, I'll be too happy to be giving a from the disgust of eating a sock. So try me .

Would that be a raw sock or a cooked one ? Fresh, or "mature" ?

I bet the boxes will even be in the same place. And the towers will look identical. The trucks might have to be different, though

If you look closely at that picture, you can already see something similar.
Notice the ship taking off.
Vertical thrusters, now that would be a cool new module.

How many of you are lactose intolerant? Lol I hope this poll result is just this forum finally lightening up instead of "Shia LaBeoufing" screaming

Can I ask the people in the non-PL camp why they don't want PL in? Is it because the thought is that FD is wasting resources on it? I'm guessing it's something along the lines of "there's not enough content in the main game so add that first". Or is it because they think it's because it's boring?

Isn't it possible that Frontier have multiple teams working on multiple projects, one of the many of them being PL? What is it that you have to lose by PL being in the game? Or is it something you're not gaining?

Anything that adds something new to the game is ok in my book, PL would be great. For all we know, a lot of the work could have been going on since before release, and only just smoothed out.

For me it is just reminding FD and everyone of the sheer quantity of core features that appear to be neglected. Nothing against PL here. but *another* release of stuff that evades this after PP and CQC would be migraine inducing.
Of course I don't know FD's internal dev model - it could easily be the case that with PP and CQC and PL the engine is getting more developd all the time, transferable assets are being created, the BGS is quietly getting richer, etc - but as there is little sign of this and lots of signs that point to it's inverse some of us just won't let it lie.

What's the point of planetary landings for the sake of it?

This has been answered repeatedly by those who look forward to it immensely. Do you expect a different answer when asking again?

Let's say it's just airless planets for now.

Flight changes immensely. There is gravity. There is also a concept of altitude. Half your sky is solid and you can't fly through it. This is before even getting into canyon flight, low-level evasion, and what combat would be like close to a planet's surface. That's difference enough just by itself - suddenly we have an enormous number of new playspaces which are radically different to open space. Even doing the same missions in these environments (dogfighting pirates down near the surface) would bring variety by itself.

It may not matter to you, but there are an enormous number of people who want to see the landscapes of other planets - watch the suns set over alien mountains, learn the terrain of a moon in their home system, find a landing spot they love for its view. However you might want to dismiss that, this is what Frontier and FFE did twenty years ago and there are still people who adore the game just for that. And play it too.

Suddenly it isn't just open space we can play in - it's potentially every planet we see, each with its own terrain and characteristics. This is more than just an expansion of gamespace. It's a multiplication of gamespace on a whole other level. Now maybe that means nothing to you, but it's a very big deal to lots of people.

This is before we even get into atmospheres - which bring weather effects, changes to the flight model, cities, plants, life, animals...

To be able to fly down and see those things have worth, just by themselves, and even without ever leaving the cockpit, to the people you're addressing.

It's fine not having any interest in that kind of thing. But to act as if it's nothing, to say that represents a complete lack of content? Are you really going to be surprised if people love simply being able to fly down onto planets for the sake of it? Are you really surprised that people disagree with you?

Best read i did for a long time in this forum.

Thank you!

But you have to remember that not everyone thinks core features are missing. I didn't come from the 84 generation, nor the FFE generation (although I was born in 84) so I never had the chance to see fan favorites that were not included here - and I'm sure I'm not alone. To me, this game has all of the core features as it currently stands. I've seen other games far worse off for the same amount of money. Anything else that's not included and added later is more icing on top. Not trying to be disrespectful in the slightest, I just don't understand why anyone would be against it (any and all additional content including PL).

I know for a fact that they will be announcing a brand new game. As for the ED surprise, I have no idea but what-ever it is I am sure we will all like it.
The cheese souffle is Ok in my book as long as there is some wine with it as well.

woof woof! - That's my other dog impression.

That is kind of the point. Whether core planned features are missing isn't a matter of opinion. They are missing. Lots of them. It may be that they have been dropped or were never intended in the first place but a lot of people paid for a different game. I personally like playing ED, for what it is, but it would be simply negligent of me, and dishonest, to pretend it was the game I pre-ordered. So I can't say about others' motivation but my motivation for continuing to remind the forums, ad nauseum, about the missing features is partly to keep awareness because FD do seem to think that it will be quietly forgotten - they may be right, when myself and others give up.
