I also miss those effects.
I was under the impression that any KS backer with a copy of the game in their reward level could access Gamma.

So when you select your game package it doesnt mention the freagle, just a sidewinder in a random system with 100 credits? Is that right?
The Free Eagle is in the next star system from where you start.
Okay... I could do with a little help here. I was a KS backer (although only £5.00 - all I could afford at the time)... I am a BETA backer, and have been playing and uploading ED videos since July... I PRE-ORDERED the final release (Merc Edition)... yet all I get when I log in is a loading screen with the option "New Commander" ?? I have no other options. 100CR and a sidewinder! What?
Can someone please tell me what I'm missing?

How do you even see where it is
Shipyard at the nearest Station and then the "Ship Locations" Tab.
Where are our free Eagles?
Try using the FIND function of the Galaxy Map. If you then set it as a destination, there will be a light-brown coloured line linking all the stars you need to travel to reach it from your current destination. Memorise this, as the game does not (yet) auto-pick each star in your trip (and in fact will complain you cannot Frame Shift to your destination).

I think someone at FD screwed up then... my Eagle is 180 lightyears away in another system. Going to be tough getting there in a sidey.
EDIT - restarted pilot, now it's in my starting system... at an unknown location! 220 ls away.... but there are no stations any where near that distance from me! It would be nice if it actually told you where it was rather than just distance.

can you please clarify, if/when further commander slots are added, will we be able to change our names any time we like in the future? I ask because I want to know how carefully I must choose

YES YOU CAN. It is the first of the three options for Super Cruise/Frame Shift. Not very well named though.
I have been playing all of the beta sessions but have stayed away from exploring the Galaxy map but now we are in gamma I can't help myself and I am blown away by it. Just looking at Sol, which is 71LY away from my new home I am starting to learn about the difference in size between the various planets in our solar system and also how close (in the scheme of things) Alpha Centauri is. The galaxy map would be such a good learning tool for young children.
