Newcomer / Intro Ganked for the first time.

I'm new to this game.. about 2 months playing.. I've been very lucky.. looked at all the videos.. slowly did everything to raise creds. I bought numerous ships.. some
I liked.. some I did not. Today I own 3 ships.. Asp explorer.. Cheiftan.. and Anaconda. They are all have A rated mods.. and the ASP and Anaconda are engineered to the max.
I just got the Cheiftan and am working on that ship.

Today.. I was making a bunch of black box runs in the Anaconda.. I had like 7 missions.. I jumped into a system called WALLA . Waiting for me.. was 5 ships.. basically sitting
by the star.. waiting for people that jump into that system... That is how I see it.. but I'm not actually sure what they were doing.
All I know.. is they attacked me.. They were all pretty small ships.

Well... My Anaconda has engineered shields, hull, and armor. No matter what they could not destroy me.. but they did knock out my engine and frame drive.. I was dead in the sky so to speak... I reboot and recover.. they are still shooting at me.. I ejected all the black boxes I had.. I got my frame drive to come up and I jumped out of there. At least I didn't loose my half a billion costing Anaconda.. the rebuy is over 16 mil. I was again lucky.

The thing is.. is this really what we have to deal with.. idiots.. sitting at a jump spot and attacking anyone that comes into the system.

Are you... sure they were players? Looking at Walla on Inara I can't see anything special about that system that would make it worthwhile for gankers to hang around. A player faction moved in about a month ago (added there directly from the look of things, they're not present anywhere else) and at some point today finally took over the system from the incumbent anarchists. Looking the faction/squadron profile up on Inara, they seem like a pretty vanilla PvE squadron, nothing about them screams "gank bros" - for a start, if they wanted a murderbase they'd have chosen anarchy as their faction's government type.

Check your recent history tab. If it was a gank wing you'll see a whole bunch of names at that timestamp.

And most importantly - you say they were waiting by the star. Do you mean in supercruise and interdicting you, or did you go into the nav beacon and get jumped there?

Don't arrive at a Nav Beacon with goodies in the hold - 'cos that is what this sounds like. If you were looking for more Mission Signal Sources then use the FSS if you have cargo (Mission signal sources have coloured circles in the FSS).

If you were interdicted on arrival, that is something else.

Yeah, probably NPCs and most likely generated by the missions. If you have multiple missions stacked, you have a chance of being jumped by multiple NPCs.

NPCs will be solid blips on your radar. Players are hollow blips.

Lol, those were probably NPC's
NPCs don't target modules or I haven't seen it. Live players do with engineered weapons designed to take out your shields, reboot your FSD and take out your power plant. With a wing you would be dead in 30 seconds. It is a totally different ED world in Open mode because many players wanted more intense combat versus NPCs in Solo or group. Enjoy.

I know of the player group that are in Walla, my home system is near by. One of them is on my friend list and I would be very very surprised if they had done this.

NPC wing gank :D It happened to me the other day, too many missions and one of them pulled me then the rest all piled in. I had too run.

Sounds like NPCs to me. What makes you think otherwise?
I thought they were NPCs at first.. but on the radar.. Npcs are square and humans are triangles. They attacked me and shot limpets at my ship trying to open my cargo.. I hurt 2 of them with my ship.. enough they left.. leaving 3.. when I did the jump.. the percentage that shows below the shields was at 6% and I had no shields.

This has been my experience as well as NPC's do not use tactical advantages such as targeting specific modules, as was said. This is a new extension of the game with FC's so this brings a lot of older players looking for a better challenges, or to just run around griefing. One of the typical ways to tell if it was a NPC is most, not all but most, make a demand of some sort, players just open fire for no reason. Sorry but Open is kind of a shark tank, so to speak. Good luck.

Look on scanner. NPC has solid box, players has empty box - edges only. So you know if you should panic or just boost out.

So there was no demand...or anything.. they just jumped in and started shooting.. they did fire limpets.. to try and get my cargo hatch open.. I was fighting for my life.. I damaged 2 of them.. and they jumped out of there.. the 3 left almost killed me.. they were small ships.. like cobras.. or viper... my shields died.. my engine quit.. I was unable to move.. I was able to fire my weapons somewhat.. I did a reboot and my frame drive came online..and I jumped out.. I had taken 94% damage.. after my jump my ship was still smoking and sparking and my shields were gone...I barely made it to a station.. I was sooooo glad.. I did.. it took over a million creds to fix my ship.. but at least it didn't blow.. because the buy back is 16mil

Well ... fly cheaper ship, what can I say :)
Try Krait MK-2. You can install fighters bay and hire pilot to help you fights. Also with heavy combat fit and full cargo this ship still can just fly away from cobras/vipers, it has pretty good engines.
I use Krait-MK2 for everything except long journeys. Have like 4 of them for different roles -> cool miner, cool fighter, cool xeno fighter...

I've only been playing this game for a couple of months... and I've went thru a bunch of ships.. first ship I bought after the sidewinder was the Cobra Mkiv... did not like it..to limited.. jump range sucked. I grind a lot.. to get a lot of creds.. I bought a diamond back explorer... saw videos comparing it to the ASP Explorer.. and traded for the ASP.. that ship I loved.. for grinding.. cargo.. jump range.. etc.. but I wanted a fighter.. so I kept the ASP and bought a Fer de Lance.... Hated it.. same weekend I traded it for the Mamba.. again.. did not like it.. so a week later.. I traded for the Python.. the Python was a great ship.. but again.. jump range.. unless you engineer it... is bad.. didn't like the cockpit.. just like I hated the Fer de lance.. it bothered me... I thought.. well.. I've got about 500mil creds.. I did a stupid thing.. I bought that big flying tank the type 10 defender.. I still had the ASP.. I almost blew the stupid type 10 just getting it to my home station.. because it barely could pull up good enough to keep from frying in a sun I jumped to. Did not like the way it flew.. so.. I traded it for the Anaconda.. I put a lot into that Anaconda.. 99mil for a power plant.. etc.. I unlocked a bunch of engineers and engineered the Anaconda to the max. I ended up selling the ASP.. and bought a Chieftain.. which I am working on right now.. engineering it.. getting all the materials.. etc.. I did all of this in just a couple months.

The real question on my mind...

Was one of the gankers an asp?
