Hello everyone!
It has come to my attention that there has been some misunderstanding regarding POI naming, moderation activity, and voting scores, so I wanted to take a moment to talk about some changes that are being implemented in the GEC site.
First, we've added some clarification to the naming guidelines. Please understand that our moderation staff aren't trying to be gatekeepers for your discoveries, but rather are tasked with maintaining the standards defined by these rules and guidelines. With this in mind, the text has been changed to be more clear about what we're looking for, and the staff will make more of an effort to discuss POI names with you in the future, rather than just saying "no" if it appears to step outside of expectations.
The updated rule reads:
POI Names should be creative and unique, comply with TOS rules, and also fall loosely within International Astronomical Union naming conventions or otherwise be poetic or interesting. As part of those conventions, names that are of a commercial nature, pop culture, or named after a living person are also discouraged. Entry names should not simply state what the POI consists of, and GEC Staff will approve POI names at their discretion.
Secondly, we have started to feel that the Staff Ratings on POIs can appear to be more discouraging than intended. Since we currently have six staff members, the staff scoring could appear less reliable than expected, despite the staff members attempting to vote based on our voting guidelines pretty closely. For this reason, we are no longer displaying a staff score on POIs. From now on, the staff scoring is only used internally to determine the "Top Staff Picks" list, and nothing more. POI scoring will be based only on the larger general voter rating from all explorers.
Thirdly, the color coding on the POI scores had an appearance of punishing new POIs. While the score does grow over time as more votes are registered, as intended, the relative "quality" that was implied by the color coding was not giving the right impression. For this reason, it is now colored only Green or Red, which shows whether the current score will place the POI on the interactive map. If the overall score is too low to be included, it will be Red. Otherwise it will always be Green.
It was always the intent that the voting system would naturally rank POIs, so that players may more easily search for the POIs that interest them, and to set a threshold where really low-quality / low-effort POIs will automatically be excluded from the map. Everything in between should be treated much more equally, and so hopefully a combination of flattening the color coding, as well as removing the staff rating will help to remove some of the confusion around this.
The GEC is an on-going project, and can always be modified to meet the needs of the exploration community, so we welcome any further feedback you have. It's not possible to please everyone 100%, but we want the GEC to be
your way of sharing discoveries in an egalitarian, freely accessible way. You are always encouraged to give feedback.
Thanks,
-CMDR Orvidius, and the GEC Staff
