Give Yamiks an Alpha key!

Is the alpha key the content creators are getting the same as the one people who bought to Deluxe Alpha package are getting next week, or is there a difference? If not, then I don't understand why he just couldn't have bought one.
Its a pre-release key. So the general idea is the same, but he can be among the first to stream/upload content. And regardless of my thoughs on the guy that is a big thing for content creators. You dont want to just depend on your subscribers, you want to lure the 'regular joe' who may be interested in EDO but doesnt really know any of the big names on youtube. You know, the people who just type 'Elite Dangerous odyssey' in youtube.

These folks will generally not watch all vids, but instead tune in the first day and watch the first guys. Viewing stats drop off massively after the first 24 hours, then even more after the next 48. If all Yamiks competitors get a week headstart on the content than that is a considerable blow to his stats. The first few vids on EDO will likely be watched much, much more than the regular content these guys put out, and Yamiks is now about to miss the boat. And not only will he miss out on all those 'bonus views', but he also miss out on the influx of new subscribers. People who will join the community with EDO will typically subscribe to a few content creators at most, and they will be the ones that are visible on the Big Day. That is why it is a problem when companies decide which journalists get access and which don't. For an example, see Linus' explosive rant on NVidia after they blacklisted one of his competitors. These people make their money with it, and this forces them to say whatever the company whose products they review want to hear.

However, Yamiks isn't a journalist. He is a guy who carved out a niche for himself as 'the salty guy with the funny insults'. Which is fine, and best of luck to him. But if you decide that you want to roleplay that act for your views there are consequences. Just like there are consequences for the guys who call every game the Greatest Game Ever.

except that's nothing like what happened, mr, but cool story ...

Not far off it though. Did you see Yammiks' last post before this whinge one? (Hyper Critical Review of ED Part 1, last week?)

Seriously.

If I'd just spent a year working on new content .. my very job relies on .. not sure I'd go out of my way to PAY Yammiks for that sort of energy either. In fact nobody would. In fact Yammiks maybe ought to grow up a bit and lay off with the emotional blackmail at least until FDev have had a chance to make their development money back?

It'll help him in the long run, lots of snidey tubes for years to come .. if he doesn't undermine his golden goose first.

So, i took a look at Yamik's video but couldn't get through it. Basically whining about how he couldn't get a freebie.

I've said it before, i like Yamiks a lot and watch a lot of his content, but this is a low point for him.

And the comments section. My god, i don't know if its all the idiots flocking to the bandwagon or his regular subscribers have melted cheese for brains.

90% of the comments are more or less:

"FD aren't giving him a copy because they don't want him reviewing it"

Are they seriously so mentally damaged that they fail to see Yamiks could spend an extra $20 and get an alpha copy of Odyssey and review it anyway?

I mean, really? There are words i want to use to describe these people, but i'd get banned for it.

I've offered to throw Yamiks a few dollars towards a copy if his 100k viewership doesn't cover the cost of a game his youtube career revolves around. I'm sure others will chip in as well. I mean, if 4 of us gave him $5 he could upgrade to an alpha version. If he hasn't actually bought the basic version already, for whatever reason, then hell, ok, what is it? $60? Would just take 60 of his 100k fans sending him $1 each and he'd be sorted.

As long as Yamiks is making money from his tale of non-woe, he will be happy, monetized viewings must be wonderful!
i assume he does and good for him. i'm not at all fond of this whole business model nor it's social implications, quite the contrary, but he has the same right as everybody else i guess. frontier is also free and entitled to exploit the phenomenon, and for sure they do, they are just not very good at it.

As you said, you didn’t watch the whole video.

Yup, it wasn't his usual 'Yamiks the character' videos, a voice and a jiggly joystick. It was the person behind the character personally whining from his sofa for dramatic effect.

Funny to be honest, but sad.

they are just not very good at it.

One reason I disagree with this is ED had an unusual start. Odyssey is the first time this game has ever had an expansion that's been completed (we assume) AHEAD of it's sale. Horizons for example was sold entirely on it's future and as such suffered from being a constant work in progress. Add a hangover from kickstart, when everybody and their dog was encouraged to join in and be a game designer too. That wasn't always positve. Ideas are great as long as their pragmatic, but the sky isn't necessariy the limit when you're the one trying to write the actual hard code line by line.

I wouldn't blame FDev for trying to avoid that narrative at all. We'll see what happens - and I'm sure Yammiks will get a key by other means - but that doesn't mean FDev are wrong to prefer freebies to go to people who are more overt with the constructive part of their criticism. At least until the major sales push has had a bite at it.

I was just wondering the same. What sort of "fan" of the game does he think he is (if that's not an outright lie) when it wasn't even worth a few euros to him for the LEP.
to be fair to yamiks (a sentence I have never used before) I think he started playing the game after the LEP.

When all is said and done, is there anybody out there who seriously believes Yamiks doesn't love the game?
But especially when we love something, we're disappointed by every aspect of if that isn't up to snuff. And for sure the FDev team have given him plenty of ammo.

Having watched many of Yamiks videos, and finding many of them funny and enjoyable to watch, I'm gonna guess he doesn't present the image that Frontier wants for their product.

If Yamiks included funny stuff about Coca Cola and McDonalds he probably wouldn't get free stuff from them either.

You can't expect handouts from companies just because you are making unsolicted videos for them.
