Glorious HIPs - 3306

It would also be interesting to see whether these stars are visible in-game, from nearby systems - I believe there are some near Sol that are invisible (galmap) but visible (skybox.)

HIP 95951 - Goes direct to an empty space at -350:29:180. If you select one of the stars next to that location, then search for HIP 95951 again, the focus barely moves.

The real life HIP 95951 (B8Ve) is an optical double with HIP 95947 (K2II).

95947 is in game, a few light years away from where searching for 95951 takes you to and on the same line to Sol, give or take - and is a binary system with K2 and B8, so it looks like somehow 95951 became merged with 95947.

Two passes on the real life data with ghost coordinates hanging around from the one that knew the difference between an optical double and a real binary system?

Are this catalogues static or may have been worked over them in RL in the last years?
Say a binary in 2012 is today an optical double!?

They're estimated at 430 +/- 20 and 400 +/- 10ly from Sol. At the limits of the error bars they could be a real binary and that might be why FDev lumped them together.

Although, looking again, 95947 is currently thought to be a real binary with a dimmer B as well, so perhaps it's just that the two got merged somehow.

The HIP catalogue, or technically the Hipparcos Catalogue was generated by the ESA Hipparcos mission that operated from 1989 to 1993. While there won't be new stars added, what often happens is new techniques and discoveries mean that the old data is often revised and reworked in light of new discoveries, this revising is usually either added to the catalogue as an addendum or in a new catalogue. Note the Tycho Catalogues were also generated from the same data. So while new data won't be added, corrections and adjustments in the analysis due to new developments in analysing data often change the results of the observations. But they can't be incorporated into the ED galaxy except in the most minor of changes such as altering existing systems names and maybe body arrangement to match an existing star system. If there are any mistakes in the ED galaxy created by revising the data they will basically stay there until the next game is released, the days of regenerating the galaxy are long over.

Started my route and visited some systems near the bubble. @Jackie Silver , here is my WIP so far:
Slice 55 on Google

I am following more or less the Orvidius way - would that be ok for you?

I have to warn you - I am a completionist. When I see an undiscovered system, I have to scan the whole system. And I have to fully scan systems that are only partially scanned in EDSM ;-) That means my progress will be quite slow...

That's normal, not completionist!

Fortunately there are squadron bookmarks...

I've visited all the stars in slice 47 that were within practical reach of a carrier (there were a couple which are probably reachable but would need a huge detour, so they can wait for later) - I'm going to move on to slice 48 now.

Well that makes no sense at all. I have started on my way back towards the bubble from clearing out the most distance ones in my slice, the first system I reach is HD 103385, a class G star up near the top of the galaxy, much higher and it would be FC territory only, so I enter the system and what the heck is that?

88 solar radii is at least a giant, if not a super giant in G class. Strange, I'm glad I decided to join this project now, I have seen things you wouldn't believe!

I'm out near the Cave Nebula at the moment, meandering towards the Elephant's Trunk.

Although I am an Elite explorer, a far better description would be "Pretty Aimless" in my wanderings at the moment, so if there is a slice in my general vicinity, I'd be pleased to help out :)

I'm in a 52ly capable I Clipper, on my own :)

Yeah, definitely some interesting quirks as to how things were placed into the StellarForge. I suspect that in a lot of these cases, we're catching a transitional phase as the star is either becoming a giant, or already shed its outer layers and what's left is shrinking toward becoming a white dwarf, so you end up with a radius, mass, and color temperature (spectral class) that don't really "add up". But that's just a guess.

It looks like the age is reasonable for being at the end of the lifespan for a G star. The size and mass might indicate it's grown and shed some of the outer mass already. Maybe not quite a red giant yet? Who knows. ;)

Slice 17 and 18 should be pretty much on the line to the Cave Nebula, would you like one of those?

Cool, 18 it is (edited my post as 17 would also be that direction, I think it falls on the boundary between them) - slice 18 is from row 100090 to row 100590 on the sheet.

Hi all, varonica here, sorry about the new username, FDEV have decided, after many years, and despite the same email address working for the frontier shop, that my old email address is no longer valid, I am unable to change it for the old account so I am locked out of posting for that account and had to create a new account with a new email, so all new posts will come in on this username, it's all rather strange and all that history for that old account is now gone....to say I am really annoyed is an understatement, I am not allowed to use the words I would like to!
