My god. I never realized it, but this is exactly what Elite is. It's a solo mmo.Not in my Solo-MMO.![]()
Actually my statement was just a pun, but as you pointed that out directly, it's really sad.My god. I never realized it, but this is exactly what Elite is. It's a solo mmo.
We're all here. We're all talking. We're all flying around. But we're separated from one another by instancing, modes, gameplay preferences and time zones. I can win a war without ever seeing an opponent or firing a shot. I can build the world's deadliest PvP murderboat in complete solitude.
On some level, I will never be entirely comfortable with this paradigm. I'm too used to the "test" being how well we can walk through the fire.
It just dawned on me that "solo mmo" is a flawless description of it. Although we could also go with "optional multiplayer mmo".Actually my statemanet was just a pun, but as you pointed that out directly, it's really sad.![]()
I just look at it as a game which may or may not have other folk in it - there are even times when there are folk around that they may not even try to blow me upIt just dawned on me that "solo mmo" is a flawless description of it. Although we could also go with "optional multiplayer mmo".
Which is even weirder, but equally true.
Fortunatly I have my gang...uhm...squad preventing me of getting "Lost in Space".It just dawned on me that "solo mmo" is a flawless description of it. Although we could also go with "optional multiplayer mmo".

Don't get me wrong. It's appealing. It's just weird. And it comes with a ton of baggage. The "optional multiplayer MMO" aspect is actually what convinced me to buy it, that and the flight model.

Eh, I'm still having difficulty describing a game with completely optional multiplayer as an "MMO". (at least in traditionally accepted terms of what MMO means) If one plays in Solo- you'll never encounter another player, ever... so "MO" (Massively Online) would be a more fitting description.
That said, it's a bit less semantic than what "Role Playing Game" means, considering one with little to no actual character development seems to pass for an "RPG" these days, even though traditionally character development (and not just "gear grind") has long been a cornerstone of RPGs.
I do agree completely with the flight model aspects, however.![]()
Even in solo we are all playing the same BGS so its one massive game that includes all of us, mode, platform, time-zone and geographical server doesn't matter at all.
I suppose in that context, even if it's a stretch, it could be considered thus. Then again, if that were the criteria- it would mean even those living in exile or banishment are still part of a social group as they're still on Earth.![]()
Everyone except the people banned to the shadow server, they only get to play with themselves.
