Off course they are! šŸ˜‰

Ooh, should we all thank them for being so friendly and helpful? I never knew they had my best interests at heart!
Sorry I didn't realise you were the boss lol, ill get my stuffs..

Most PvPers are just people mate, playing the game how they like. That might not fit your preffered picture that you and some others seem to have in thier heads but its reality.

Have you ever tried talking to someone who PvPs without hurling abuse at them? You should probably try that.

It's pretty simple really, some people enjoy the flight model for combat, because lets face it, its bloody epic for it. And the NPC's are pretty much a joke when you progress a little, You really expect people not too look to kill real people where the ships can be a challenge? (Or at least some of them are, and you don't really know till you pull them as you don't know how good the pilot is until you pull them.

I swear this community has SUPER archaic veiws on PvP content sometimes. Unfortunate

Greetings Commanders,

I would very much like to emphasize to the PvE Community, especially those in Private Groups or who may play in Solo Mode, that there are many many PvPers who are very concerned that many PvEers and CareBears will occasionally get ganked and then sometimes refuse to ever play in Open again. When we see non PvP ships being blown up, many of us will attempt to counter the ganking and griefing. Indeed, there are lawful PvP player groups actively patrolling hotspots like engineering bases and CGs.

It is our dream that everyone fly in Open and to learn that learning to defend yourself is fun. It is a pipe dream of course. But we will, and have died trying.

P.S. It is also important to know that we absolutely respect the Outlaw Playstyle. o7

Most of them are sadly not kids on holiday, this is just how they play the game. The only way to avoid them is to go solo or Mobius, just avoid open in hot spots like engineers.
I go to engineers in open, but don't ever see other players there. Probably 'cos I'm playing on XBox and I'm living in New Zealand. So nice that I don't ever have to deal with griefers šŸ˜€. Met another player @ the Guardian ruins coupla weeks back, but he was cool.

Maybe if you all stopped being such easy marks the gankers would really have a harder time. But no. Beeline to Farseer, Shinrarta, and whatever CG is active at the moment like the drones you are. Don't bother learning to fly your big ship. Don't bother learning to outfit. Heck, why even consider choosing Solo or PG when you're not in the mood for PvP.

Nope, just click Open. Take that five days of exploration data and head straight to Shinrarta. Maybe you won't get ganked this time. But hey, if you do, there's plenty of people ready to hold your hand and make you some chicken soup.

Meanwhile, all the folks you decry as gankers be like:

What, a creepy little cultist with a big nose? 😃

Never said they weren't guy! But for me to respect their mode of play, I would like the same in return. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should..

I would love for them to engage in a bit of communication, hell even roleplay like some groups, ie: Dark Marauder's.. But no. It was usually, 'Drops into system' just about turns and ... "boom" rebuy.

Yeah, real fun lol

People you and this forum would label "gankers and griefers" are some of the most intelligent, kind, and thoughtful people I know. Some of the highest quality players this game has ever seen not only gank, but mine, explore, trade, BGS, and do PowerPlay. More than a few write, roleplay, plan in game events, and mentor new players in every aspect of the game you can imagine. Even more test the game's limits, provide valuable feedback to the developer, and create even more meaningful adventures for all of us to enjoy.

The fact of the matter is Open Play allows for unrestricted PvP in a dystopian space punk environment. Folks like you lose their brains over it because frankly, you probably should've moved on from Elite ages ago.

I was not aware we were so well aquatinted that you know what I should and shouldn’t be playing. I’ve not posted any ā€œloss of my mindā€ over what you do or don’t choose to do in your video game play. Your ranting at me about my views on gankers is funny. I’ve made no claims about gankers or ganking. I just got through saying people shooting ships in a game about shooting ships seems reasonable to me. What doesn’t is this intense view that people flying a ā€œweakā€ ship or that pursue engineering are deserving of scorn.

I do now see how superior you view yourself. Makes other things clear. I’ll keep on playing despite my apparent need to move on ages ago.

There's a general consensus among a certain group of gamers that NPCs are for kids, and the real game is the emergent game of killing or griefing outside of what would otherwise be rational gameplay. Killing ships at stations that can just respawn is a fine example. The goal isn't go accomplish anything game related, but to create havoc among the human players so that the individual feels they have made an imprint on the game. Everyone wants to be famous.

Okay, I'll Google it.... 😐
Okay, Googled it: "An edgelord is someone on an internet forum who deliberately talks about controversial, offensive, taboo, or nihilistic subjects in order to shock other users in an effort to appear cool, or edgy." By that definition there's a lot of other terms you could use for someone like that! However, most of those other terms would not be allowed on this forum, so I can see why you used "edgelord"! 😃

It's been a long, long time since I did the Engineer grind for the first time. In fact, it was when Engineers first came out. Back then, the first bit of advice was to unlock Farseer and grab the extended range FSD. That's been the dominant paradigm ever since. The sheer amount of traffic (and resulting violence) shows this. Beyond that, Google "Engineer guide Elite Dangerous" and see what people recommend. The top result (Fox's Guide or some such) doesn't even mention Martuuk.

We all know how lazy the average Commander is. "What's the fastest way to grind (insert goal here)?"

I know this isn't very scientific. I don't have the time to really dive in. Just the reflections of a long time Elite: Dangerous player (who has done his fair share of ganking).

Good defense doesn't require a massive sacrifice on the part of an explorer. This has been known for a long, long while now.

Real life analogies don't work here. Elite: Dangerous is dystopian space punk where folks will kill you for any and every reason under the sun if it suits their interests.

Reports of Open Play's have always been, and will continue to be, greatly exaggerated.

I see false equivalency here a lot with griefing and ganking. Someone can be a ganker and not be doing so purely for the sake of irking the person they are attacking. Griefers, by defintion, are there to gather as much personal satisfaction as possible from causing misery to others. I see sometimes a grey area between the two, where any community goal is met with the facade of resistance, which often is just a convenient excuse for griefing, without looking like a total DW. Sometimes the resistance is legit, sometimes it's too boring to do the CG so anything other than that where you are guaranteed some action is a worthwhile venture, but doing it solely for lulz between like minded folk is akin to burning ants with magnifying glasses. I mean it can be fun, they are ants.. who cares? In the game, they are just names on a screen, but they aren't NPCs so you're causing some real grief there, some carebear is getting their comeuppance, and hopefully you forced them to start a thread about it or quit the game in frustration.

So griefing and ganking, not the same. There seems to be a whole spectrum of different gameplay styles, some who are in on the joke and some who are the joke, and some who move back and forth between the two. Either way, unwanted contact in the game can be avoided by playing outside of Open, however all contact is avoided in the process. So the griefers are basically acting as a control valve to shunt new-ish players away from Open play. The result then is even more griefing because, like fish in a poorly kept pond, the griefers will congregate at the food source.

Do you intentionally equate griefers with gankers or are you only responding to others who have, and are the two mutually exclusive? Because I have never considered a PvPer who runs in a group and uses a strength in number advantage (and opportunity) to be a griefer. Should I?

I have a theory about gankers and griefers. I think they are the kind of people who are bullied in their day-to-day life. They get picked on at school, yelled at by their abusive boss, or have an overbearing mother like Norman Bates. So, when they sit down behind the keyboard they become monsters. They get picked on all day, so when they are playing their favorite games online, preferably with other betas who can't stand up to people in real life, they become the abusers. They become God. It's the only way they get to feel powerful. The same goes for certain moderators I've seen on a few online forums. I'm looking at you, rpg.net

Now, I'm not talking about people who kill other players legit. If I get killed by a CMDR working for Zachary Hudson while I'm under Aisling Duval, that is a legit kill and I shouldn't get too salty over it. If anything, I should be mad at myself for either a lack of skill, or because I tried engaging a fully outfitted combat ship with my cargo ship because it has nice shields.

I don't even get mad when other players kill me for no reason at all. It's just a game. The only time I get annoyed is when a player goes out of his way to stalk and harass me. Then I just block them from instancing and move on.

Yes, some of them might be sadistic little (insert your favorite vulgar slang word here), but I always think to myself... jeez... this guy's life must really suck. Then I get over it.
I wondered how long it'd take before the armchair psychs came in to infer all sorts of wild speculation about people over the way they play a video game.

I know, I get it from the other direction too, people that insist I must not play in open and don't know how to fly and probably use a docking computer because I've said the existence of private and solo are good things. But seriously dude, c'mon. Sneering condescension at people for liking what you don't like is never a good look.
