Having to pay extra for features promised in the kickstarter feels like betrayal.

I don't agree with the "It's better than a subscription".
Being poked in the eye is better than having your arm chopped off but not chopping my arm off doesn't justify being poked in the eye.
FD can fund development and running the servers from sales of the game and expansions.
Just like other companies do.
They don't HAVE to charge for cosmetics or you've GOT to pay a subscription.
They could instead charge for some cosmetics to supplement their profits on the game and still do just fine.
It's not like ED has the server costs that games that do require a subscription do, we all know it's mainly P2P with a few gateway servers that cost pittance in the grand scheme of things.

That actually has a name... It's a false dilemma fallacy. I don't understand why some people enjoy throwing it around this much.

Go look, right now, at what other online game companies charge for "cosmetics" and oftentimes many objects that decidedly *not* just cosmetic, then come back and look at the bleeping $3 pricetag for this feature.

Your molehill isn't even a molehill, much less a mountain.

"Poke in the eye", it's not even getting scratched by a fingernail, let alone chopping limbs off.

So what was the minimum kickstarter fee?

Edit,
Never mind I found it. £80 for all expansions. Yes I can see why you feel you should get everything free after outlaying that kind of big money. Jeez

Ships: save your credits and upgrade your ship. Get new weapons, engines and equipment and customize your ship the way you want it--------> . <------- Check out the body-kits and paint jobs on offer, give your ship that personal touch.

This stop denotes that separately from the in-game purchase of weapons, engines, and equipment for imaginary space money, there will also be body kits and paint jobs on offer, presumably for real money, that you can "check out" and purchase at your leisure.

We have been given free ships liveries and free decals so the bolded part the OP has been met

That there are other that are purely cosmetic and optional purchase does not deminish that

They did say that some body kits and paint packs would be chargable

No, they didn't..

People who bought the game thereafter could well be considered to be on differing terms but its pretty obvious what FD stated back when they were looking for support to get ED going. If thats not dismal enough, there are a load of things they've gone back on and not delivered and either stonewalled people about or managed in a dismissive way.

The behaviour is pretty revealing. I wouldn't mind so much but rather than address those affected and make a good will gesture all they've done is the usual silence treatment. I was always supportive of the project, and when I backed it wanted nothing but the best for them and the project.

However, its hard to maintain that view when you've been shafted. Turns out I'm not a very good judge of character.

Wow, a thread whining about paid cosmetics. I've not seen one of these in ages.

This.

What is it with all these people that keep crying for everything to be free.
When I started to play Elite back in 1984 and many many games after that, there weren't even shipkits, paintpacks or dlc in any form for that matter and I had an incredible amount of fun.
It's like you can't have fun, game is totaly worthless, dev is a compulsive moneygrabber who denies you to have any fun at all, unless you get everything for free.
I payed for the game so........
You buy a car and the dealer tells you at the day of purchase that in a couple months there will be a nice set of rims available.
So you go back a couple months later and ask the dealer were your free rims are? Right......

If you like those cosmetic items so much then pay for them, if that's to expensive to you then you probably don't like them enough.
If the items in store aren't worth your money then please stop crying that they should be free, it's not that they have any influence on the functionality or gameplay.

When I take the kids out to the Mac or movies I spend more money then a whole bunch of store Items or the price of Horizons.
The prices in store are reasonable in comparison to the fun I have with them, if that wouldn't be the case then I simply wouldn't buy them.
I wouldn't go about crying for them to be free instead then though.

Done venting.

Is there a secret Reddit group where all the whiners hang out and decide the next topic to infest the forums with? Presumably there's a fair amount of whining about which ever topic is chosen by those that didn't vote for it?

Probably.

I think it's generally characterised as trolling.

Perhaps it's what you do when you hate a game and have nothing better to do while waiting for some "other game" to get out of alpha and actually launch and become playable.

Oh for crying out loud....

IT'S 3 DOLLARS.

The average person spends more on a meal at McDonald's.

I wouldn't eat at McD's on a bet..... also I have no interest in ship cosmetics; so for me it's a win/win situation.

Mods - could we just merge all these threads into one big 'Whinging about paid cosmetics' megathread?

Seriously, every day for the past few weeks there's been someone moaning about the same thing using different language in the subject line. It's getting really old now, and there's only so many ways we can respond with "Don't like it? Don't buy it!", especially after the board nearly went into meltdown the other day over something that wasn't even an issue (ship naming).

At least in a megathread we can have a stickied post at the top with stock responses...

That argument isn't very good tbh, it's way too passive. If players are unhappy about an aspect or feature of the game they have the right to make their voices heard, no matter how much you disagree with them. Just look at what happened with ship naming, it was about to set a dangerous precedent but the community spoke out and we managed to make FDev change it. If people had sticked to the "don't like it, don't buy it" argument none of that would have been possible.

And before you reply to this comment with "it's just ship naming, it's not important", I'll remind you again that different people can have different opinions.

But then this happened: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/10029-Exclusive-Cosmetics-Poll

If anyone's shafted you, it's your fellow members of the community.

Things change. Development of anything, not just games, is always going to involve give and take. It's not something to take personally.

I wouldn't eat at McD's on a bet..... also I have no interest in ship cosmetics; so for me it's a win/win situation.

It's been a long time since Supersize Me, y'know, it's not that bad these days! At least in my locale.

Are you sure that the community prompted FDev to change it? Because I heard it was all just a miscommunication from Sandro. Nowhere did FDev say they were changing their approach in response to Community feedback. If you have evidence suggesting otherwise though, please share it.

Also, I understand that people have different opinions. I don't understand why people feel the need to raise the same topic again and again using slightly different wording to make the same point (like this one), especially when it's been discussed to death in countless identical threads already.
