No problems here. Downloaded in less than half an hour and I'm in Open play. Bought myself a planetary approach suite and a planetary vehicle hangar.

Onwards...

Guys, the servers are obviously overloaded. I know you're all excited (I am too) but posting here with "It won't download" posts really isn't helping. Give it 24 hours and then if it hasn't started working, ask for help.

Don't see Horizons Beta 2.0 on launcher launched from Steam. I can see it from the same launcher downloaded from FD's site.

Is that normal?

Don't really want to install it on Windows 10 individually as it doesn't support the Rift any more and also Frontier/AMD still haven't fixed the game-crippling supercruise bug, so was hoping to install on Steam and use it on my Windows 8.1 installation.

I can do that if it's Steam as both operating systems see the same Steam library. But not with the standalone launcher.

I have the original E:D lifetime expansion pass and I don't see Horizons - all I see is:

Elite Dangerous [32-bit]
Elite Dangerous - Ships beta [1.5] - 32-bit
Elite Dangerous - Ships beta [1.5] - 64-bit
Single player combat training

I'm starting the launcher from Steam.

You need to download the launcher from the ED Store (My Downloadable Products). Don't use Steam.

However, some have suggested you can use the launcher in your Steam folder by launching it directly (not from Steam).
By default it's in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Elite Dangerous".
Not sure if that's an 'approved' method though. Needs a dev to confirm, but they're probably too busy fixing the fact the download is actually broken for many people.

Should I install this in Program Files or can I install it in Program Files (x86)?

I ask because I´m installing in (x86) So, next mandatory question: can I simply move the installation (in the case it doesn´t work) or shall I have to unistall/reinstall in Program Files?

I don't know. Some of these errors may be distribution errors.

Yes, but a lot of people want to know if the Server refused to provide installer : Not available , message, means it's not available because server overload, or not available because their lifetime pass isn't working or whatever. Just need the info.

It isn't supported through Steam yet. You have to use Frontiers Launcher download.

Yeah I read that just after I submitted my post - TY though. It's a shame though that this slipped through the FD QA test (if they have a QA dept or procedure in the first place) and users had to find out about that... I hope that's a lesson for FD and they'll do better in the future

update:
I went to the Steam ED folder and started "EDLauncher.exe", a message popped up with "blah blah... Yes / No", I selected Yes and in the browser a DL was started of the new version, after done I started the DL, installed and run the file from the location again, this time working and showing Horizons 2.0

I started out with a steady 3 MB/s DL and 1h ETA, now it's down to .30 MB/s with ~7h ETA... do they have only one DL server!? This gotta change, seriously.

update 2:
Speed picked up to 3 MB/s... let's hope it'll stay there :)

What I suspect is going on is the server's returning some sort of HTTP 50X error to the request for the files, I forget which exact code is for 'Not Available'... might be 503? Which implies and overloading problem. But that's just my random thought from a black box perspective.

A lot of us can't even install the game because of account/permissions issues. Coming on here and telling us it's okay for you and you're playing is not really helpful to anyone!

Yes it does. It makes them whip the hamsters harder that are powering their servers. Mines just gone up to a more respectable speed, you see. The sounds of squeaking in their server room must be intolerable right now.

Frontier are not the only company that suffers from these sorts of performance issues during peak traffic period. (...)

They had the sale numbers and know how many people play daily, it's just impossible to not know the traffic impact a launch like this would be, unless, they really didn't ca......

Take a look at CCP, almost every time they know a very HUGE war on EVE is going to take place, they move their biggest servers to the location where the war will happen in order for players to be able to play, if they know by just paying attention to their product, so can every other company. Frontier could had rented a small server if not bought a new one just to prevent this now (and on the future with any next expansion), they got paid by the pre-orders in the first place.

But anyway, enough ranting, they did a big mistake (again), let's just wait for things to calm down, so we can download the beta and play ^^
