How about some icy caves..

..while we wait for the official news about the (assumed) ice planet upgrade in, what would be the second instalment of my DIY concepts of things possibly not to come.

It started as a regular cave but I then thought that's boring, I should make it yuge. So yuge, you could fly a ship into it 😄 Threw in some mysterious structures as well, since caves need secrets 🤨🔎

This is excellent!

I strongly suspect the reason we don't see more enclosed spaces in general (aside from the surfaces being heightmaps, I mean even in space) is that the NPC AI still cannot cope with manoeuvring in close quarters. Those that do exist, such as the corridors in some installations and even surface canyons, see very little action aside from maybe some PvP and PvP racing. The AI can't make use of them. You see AI ships bumping off buildings just trying to land in a starport.

I think the AI thing is a bigger hurdle than physically adding the environments. I'd kinda like to see them added even if the NPCs don't use them, but I half wonder if FD are holding off till they can be done right.

I would also love lava caves, from what we know they should be much more common than their current non-existent state and some of them can be quite large and winding, perfect for racing.

I would also like to see large fissures, ravines, and cracks. There are canyons in-game but I think they could be improved a lot, they currently look like the sort of "canyons" you could make in one of those last-last gen games like Fracture or that you could find on planets in Mass Effect 1. No sharp edges, overlaps, high-frequency details etc. All should be really common in an environment without erosion.

I'm really excited for the future of this game. Clearly the developer is passionate about it, and they seem to have some impressive technical chops to achieve these things. I think exploring the galaxy just for the sake of seeing new sights would be much more appealing if there was a realistic level of interesting landscapes on planets to find and explore, even if they were implemented before atmospherics.

But who knows, maybe they don't want to update the Stellar Forge (or planetary generation if that's a different system) all the time so they don't ruin CMDRs finding interesting things in the current system. Maybe they want to wait for one big update so everyone can take it on the chin at once and afterwards have much better planets across the board. I don't know if that fits with how they're developing though.

how about Asteroids Caves?

Already have those, those asteroid bases in hollowed out asteroids don't just grow like that ;)

Current planet tech I seriously consider to only be a first stage, it uses a height bitmap for surface features so it can't have caves or overhangs, I expect, if new era is atmospheric planets, they will use that opportunity to revamp the planet generation tech to cope with more variation.
