How do you play ED and what do you want from it?

I'm currently playing Assassin's Creed Origins.

Hiding from people. Killing people. Hiding from people and then killing them.

https://www.destructoid.com/why-elite-dangerous-is-my-nightly-holiday-468446.phtml

As Joel says on the above link - which you should read if you haven't, it's very good - Elite is my nightly holiday.
I can't say what I do, because I never know what I'm going to do until I turn it on. I spent one interesting night building a stripped down, engineered Eagle just to farm DWEs. It flies nearly 700m/s and its basic FSD can almost take it to a nearby system.
I play other games, usually single player like Dishonored or Alien Isolation, or online racers which I'm pretty good at, but I always get an itch after an hour or so to just put my headphones on, sit back in my bean bag and ease my weary bottom into a flight suit. Then the stars are mine and I can lose entire evenings in there.
There's a lot of moaning about updates lack of updates and the wrong updates and bugs and whatnot, but that all goes over my head because here I am, flying a spaceship in a real galaxy, in a darkened room, on a beanbag.
Elite gives me everything I need from a game and although it can undoubtedly be better in some areas, I don't want it to change too much.

I've been a few things in Elite... an Onionhead smuggler, slave trader and an arms dealer to begin with, followed by a stint as a henchwoman of Archon Delaine.

Then I moved up to direct the operations of the Black Omega crime-syndicate, claiming a swathe of the Pegasi Sector.

These days I'm a wandering agent of chaos, supporting anarchists, subverting systems, robbing Commanders and NPCs of their cargos...

As I go about my mayhem, I pick up bits and bobs. Every so often I see what mods I can get out of them to make my ships a little bit better at their mischief.

And I have a great time! :)

Very happy with the game's development so far overall although I would like to see more love for criminal-based gameplay as well as a sturdy and fair punishment system.

My philosophy is somewhat similar. I wanted Elite updated, potentially with multiplayer. Although I'm not impressed with the general gamer community (or people in general), so tend to stick to myself anyway. I don't mind having people around me, but I wish they would behave more like people and less like gamers. And while I liked the idea of Frontier and FFE, the executions were rather poor and buggy. The newtonian flight model was an interesting touch, but didn't work in practice. It was great to be able to land on planets with atmospheres.

ED so far has delivered, if slowly. And there seems to have been a few sidetracks I didn't feel a need for (or rather, had they been fully finished, I would probably enjoy more); CQC and Powerplay. Add multiple CMDRs in the same ship to that; why do this when we can't even substitute them with NPCs). And there have been some inconsistencies, or rather CPEs (Convenient Plot Elements). That'd be the 3D printing mess, the remote presence nonsense, all it does it move the slider away from simulation towards gamey, and I like the slider to be closer to simulation (with a dusting of gamey).

What I'm drumming my fingers waiting for is accretionary discs, atmospheric flight. Liquid on planets. More details such as primitive life. By the latter I mean algae and plant life, maybe single-cell or primitive multicell organisms. I don't care for critters straight away, as I'd rather see the job done right instead of just emulate No Mans Sky.

And more danger. Yes it is supposed to be a cut-throat galaxy, but it can't really be so without proper crime-punishment systems in place. Both from the point of view of the Pilot Federation - which should frown upon its members containing a significant proportion of murderous psychopaths, but also the NPC systems which realistically should be against too much trouble in their respective backyards. Varying based on government type and ability to enforce their laws, of course.

The thing is, cut-throat doesn't refer to our ability to win at all costs. It refers to what happens when we lose. And at the moment, not much happens except maybe the occasional rebuy screen and having to pay some rather insignificant fines...

:D S

I play flight sim style- HOTAS & pedals, head tracker, three monitors. I'm not overly fussed about what I'm doing in the game, I just take on whatever seems interesting at the time. A distinct lack of prior planning sees me currently close to galactic North, right over SagA* with a three month return trip in front of me... Ah well, 2.4 should have landed by then, so there'll be lots of new things to do and see in the bubble! :D

What I want is an effective crime and punishment system. If griefers were faced with real consequences for their actions then there might actually be a chance for some meaningful interaction with other people to take place in open. It's worth noting that I consider both piracy and PvP to be valid player actions, before someone jumps in with the usual 'carebear' type comments...

I also want a few other things.

Turn on the colour on planets again, FD! Yeah, I know, it's coming, but really, biege planets? What were they thinking?

Some love for exploration. Stuff to find and do in windswept and interesting distant locations with some neat tools to help out. You know it makes sense!

Bring in fun stuff like the old long range smuggling missions. The payouts don't have to be massive, just commensurate with the time taken and level of risk.

And for FD to just keep on doing what they do. I'm fine with the relaxed pace of game development. Hopefully the microtransaction model will keep paying enough for them to keep the servers up and the devs on task; if not I'm happy to buy another season pass next year. :p

How do I Play Elite?
PC with Logitech X3D Pro / G13 / G413 / G502 on G240 (gee, lots of Gs)
Solo player as:
- I'm such an antisocial freak who plays MMOs and MP games just to hide before other people
- irregular play style, hard to keep up contacts

What Do I Do?
Slowly progressing towards bigger ships. Mostly cargo mission runner, occasional explorer - atm in the black to SagA*, somewhere in the middle.
Not interested in anything that involves combat with other players, competition of any kind.
Inclined to try mining.
Sometimes it's be nice to interact with similar minded people, but luckily the need goes away quickly so I can enjoy my solitude once more.

What Do I Want From Elite?
Exactly what it offers - space sim with trading as a valid way of life. With whole flight mechanics involving manual navigation, landing and taking off with permission asking. I've done my share of combat flying and destruction. Now I want to enjoy space with simple flying and making some coin.
I won't be lying, waiting for StarCitizen and it's persistent universe, with high RP impact. ED is somewhat lacking in that field. This game has many things to offer but personally I feel it's somewhat ... shallow. Perspectives are great but when you get into it it appears dull, repetitive and in most cases unrewarding. I found my niche and i enjoy it despite lack of depth and limited options.

How do you play ED and what do you want from it?

I play solo, even when I am in open. I do not do multi player ever: no pvp, no coop.

1.
I want interesting and engaging mechanics for core game play like exploration, scanning, mining, bounty hunting, piracy etc.
I have made several proposals myself and seen many excellent proposals from other players that could give gameplay an incredible boost.
examples:
- I would like cool system exploration with the help of ship launched probes.
- I would like planetary mining with the help of specialized mining SRV
- I would like a more engaging scanning mechanic for planets and the information could be presented better.

2.
I personally do not care at all about multiplayer content, but many people do, so that is fine by me.
What I do dislike very much is seeing multiplayer content added that should have also had a single player variant:
- Winging up with npc
- NPC multicrew

3.
I want the game to rely less on information on external websites. It may be easy for the devs in the short run, but it will kill the game in the long run.
Information about in-game activities should be presented in the game itself.
examples:
- In ship yards we should be able to preview diverse outfittings of ships like is now done on the Coriolis shipyard website.
- Information about the engineers should be much more comprehensive
- We should have more options to get at trade information (FD already acknowledged this).

4.
Diversity, Diversity, Diversity :)
I would like to see more variation in space (and planetary) station types and exteriors.
For example:
- mining installations, military fortresses, intelligence gathering stations and observatories with huge dishes and telescopes, Corporate headquarters etc.
- Gutamaya spacestation designs for the empire that make me really feel like I am in Imperial space.
- More NPC military capital ships types: destroyers, Light cruisers, military tankers and repair vessels, Frigates, Troop transports etc.
In the X-Wing / TIE-fighter franchise they were able to stimulate the players fantasy and conjure up a whole military universe by presenting different ships, fleets etc.

5.
A separate military mission board to which you only get access if you sign up with the military.
I would like to see a great variation of missions on there:
- combat missions
- escort missions
- transport missions (of goods and military personnel)
- espionage missions (espionage should get its own toolset for long distance observation, taking photographs of enemy fleet movements, data recording and intercepting signals etc.

6.
I would love to eventually experience planets with atmospheres.
I also would love to get access to the upper layers of gas giants. There could be cool industrial and hidden military installations there

7.
I would love to walk around on a planet or enter spacewrecks in a cool space suit with its own survival mechanics.

EDIT:

8. I would like to see more pilot action in supercruise, more player agency, more piloty things to do.
I also would like the HUD to change in supercruise (in a similar way like when we approach a planet) to underline that we are flying in a different mode. The HUD might show us the ideal and quickest route to circumnavigate a planet for example.

For me it's two reasons. I like flying a spaceship with a freedom to decide where to go and what to do. Also I like playing for the community's sake.

What adds to the fun of playing the game is sometimes to come to these forums and just sharing and discussing your in-game experiences with others while listening to theirs, not to mention hearing and watching videos of all the amazing stuff the explorers find outside the bubble. That's the kinda stuff that brings this game depth that isn't immediately visible on first glance.

Some really interesting responses here and while it shows we all tend to want different things, there are a lot of common themes as well.

How I Play
I prefer role play. When I enter the game I enter as my commander. I don't have any elaborate inner story going, but I do try to see the ED universe through his eyes. It makes every flght, every station visit, every npc encounter more interesting and alive. The BGS helps a lot with that, giving some semblance of changing socio-political conditions in the bubble that I use to shape my activities.

I've done some exploring, spending a month or two out in the black. Mostly, though, my commander is a working guy, a space trucker. I don't use external sites like eddb -- that would break the immersion for me. I just travel the space lanes from station to station, checking the missions, reading the latest news, and looking for trade items I can pick up for a discount, hopefully to sell somewhere else for a small profit. It took me two years (and resorting to a couple of CGs) to make enough credits to buy my AspX. It's a simple, hardworking existance.

What I want from ED
I have no interest in building an unrealistic fleet of superships that my commander would likely not be rated to fly anyway. The whole Thargoid thing is interesting, but I have no intention of getting involved in bug hunts or expensive wars (I'm content evading the occasional pirate). I'm okay with CGs -- if one happens somewhere close, I'll take part, if it means a few credits in my account.

What I want is more of the small, subtleties that really make the game for me. I'd like to see a little more impact from the politics within systems, as well as across the bubble. Maybe an outbreak that starts spreading across all the stations in a system and beyond, causing significant population depletion and a call for some research materials and medicines from nearby systems. (Or, alternatively, finding whole systems temporarily closed and patrolled by the military because of the contagion.) I'd like to come across a real distress call, where I could actually help someone by finding them some needed parts or giving them a lift to a nearby station. I'd be happy just to sometimes see a few patrol ships traveling the spaces between systems, on the lookout for pirates.

I've only been playing for 2 months, and I play solo.
I'd been searching for an MMO to replace EVE which I had played since beta.
I've done all the missioning I'm likely to do, and now its pretty much exploration only.
I've just finished a trip to Colonia and Sag A, and now zigzagging across map slowly heading back to fit a long term ship.
What would I like to see? More alien races for one. More concurrent storylines. Greater depth to exploration in line with storylines, races, politics, humankinds trajectory.

I stopped playing when Powerplay hit, occasionally check what has been changed in new patches.

wants: multiplayer content, interaction, balanced PvP, separate open from other modes, more complexity and nuance to BGS (maybe even player driven or influenced economy), more and varied missions (maybe even player progression specific missions like scripted naval progression missions)

I am not delusional, I know ED will never be what I'd like it to be due to early design choices.
Ask yourself this question:
Why are you playing this game? This video was an eye opener for me and made me realise that for the most part I don't enjoy the activities in the game and it's just wast of my time. Strongly recommend to watch.

Elite started to feel like a second part time job, and I can't accept the mindless grind to be able to play the game my way, a lot of this is because of Engineers, and because there is no reward for me (balanced multiplayer gameplay) why would I play the game? To see scripted events? and static locations? Some say watching Obsidian ant videos is better than playing the game! That says something.

80% exploration, a bit of everything else.

My main source of fun is roleplaying my character : I won't engage certain tasks (slavery for instance) and will join a CG to help build an outpost in deep space even if it is the worst way to make credits.

What do I wish ? Basically, Elite : Beyond.

I played such a vast amount of time now that everything looks a bit stale and yet, I'd love to mine / explore / trade / rescue if new gameplay mechanics were introduced. For instance, giving explorers more to do than honk & scoop. Will FD give us that : wait and see. They gave us the best (Planetary landing) and the worst (PewPewgoids) in the same season, so who knows.

I enjoy the exploration and finding new things / places in the game. I enjoy the co-op play with friends. I love the hunt for bounties. I look forward to putting a more personal touch on the game...having fleet carriers for my faction and maybe one day personal bases of our own to build and design how we like (something like the personal spaces in warframe) . We already have our own asteroid base so things are progressing.

Its not really the game itself that makes me mad, its more the developers and how its been handled. If the game dropped out of the blue today "as is" with absolutely no plans of future dlc or bug fixes, I'd be fine with it. It wouldn't be my favorite game of all time, but I'd take it for what it is and have fun with it. My problems stem from hearing promises and visions galore and then going into complete radio silence. I also have a problem with the whole "reworking core features." The idea is fine and a good and necessary move by FD but no one seems to be asking the real question. Why were things implemented like this in the first place? Why did we get what we got and why are we still getting sub-mediocre things? Why are we taking the entirety of next year to "focus" on things that should've been done right from the start?

I could keep going, but basically, if we're playing a beta version of what we want to play, even if it takes a few more years to develop, tell us.

As for how I play, I usually stick to Hazres and CZs. I play open unless Im flying without a rebuy for some reason and I tend to drift from one system to the next.

I'm reasonably happy. I play Mobius group and tend to just do my own thing. Sure some more content would be nice in the future and some awkward bugs need fixing, but in general I am okay with things.

How do I play? I don't.

What do I wait from it? Nothing. It's already provided me many and many hours of fun, I'm grateful. Nothing else to see here. Apart from the Forums, which are the best.

If FDev pleasantly surprises me, on the other hand… I'll joyfully come back.

Ok so i have been a member of this forum for just over 4 yrs, was even a mod at one point, i stopped playing sometime last year i think, and so far seen nothing to bring me back.
I totally enjoyed the game when i first started, i did pretty much some of everything, but mostly trading, worked up to Elite in trading too, became a billionaire, then i found not much progression to do anything else. Exploring was meh, mining was totally boring, and little rewards, Powerplay was just a grindfest.
i hated how everything came in through CG's.
So i think for me this thread is asking what could i reasonably expect to bring me back (maybe other players too)

Well exploring for one, something worthwhile to investigate, something new to find. Strange wrecks, salvageable ships and modules, sellable too.
New lifeforms, new stations, (new design ones) Mysteries out there to find and solve, new dangers and threats.

New ships, no, not really, but new and interesting things to do with my present ships.
I would love to see an accurate worth while economy, maybe player run, where my sales and buys have a real effect on that system or the galaxy.
NPC crews, so if i chose, i could sit back and enjoy the sights whilst my crew navigated to where i wanted to go, where i could give orders or step in to take control if needed. (this very much wanted)

More life on stations, (and eventually planets) people waling around doing their day to day tasks, this would add so much realism to the game, i could start to believe and immerse in it.

Much more into mining, surveying with scanners, maybe selling the info, 2 man crew or npc crew, one firing lasers, another the scanners, and a better collection mechanic, like a very large vacuum scoop, to collect more, and so more worth while.

Onboard market data with up to date prices for sales and buying, less reliance on external sites.

More planet side vehicles, especially a fully equipped mining rig capable of drilling below the surface for minerals, with sonar or scanners for finding the best spots, maybe the best spots are in volcanic dangerous areas, or below geysers. And a vehicle able to extract hydrogen\oxygen from a planet surface to make fuel, for own use or for sale. (just some examples)

Certainly in the future, yes space legs and atmospheric planets, but the gameplay must be introduced too with many varied tasks that can be done.

A more dynamic and living galaxy too, have stations and factories for specific systems and goods, high tec should have factories making ships and high tec modules for example.
Also they should have trade ships in the space lanes full of those goods, where pirates could attack them and steal the goods, to be able to follow them on their routes to plan attacks at certain points, so these ships would need escorts too. (more persistence)

Waterworlds and submersibles are an obvious want, yes please. (with added gameplay)

In the future i would also like to see colony building, maybe amongst groups, pick a planet, build outposts ect. ( i know with current mechanics not possible)

All or some of these i would be logging back in for, until then i keep in touch on these forums, watching and waiting.

I play the occasional Star Trek bridge crew when I want multi crew.
CQC is really awesome in EVE Valkyrie.

I use helloV to watch series in Elite dangerous, though less and less as I like the big cinema in BigScreen is so awesome.
I like watching star trek while parked outside a station though and when I want 2.4 stuff Obsidian ant.
