How long will Elite Dangerous rule the world of space games?

If you're into FPS games, try out Shadow Warrior 2 and Doom 2016. You will not be disappointed, 2016 was an amazing year for the genre.

Heh, for the moment, my gameplay schedule is fully booked. For FPS i'm playing Fortnite at the moment. Erm... actually, that's third person, but whatever, its my current pew-pew game.

I quit Eve a long time ago. So expensive! So boring! Lol

I think ED will stay top for a while longer yet, and even if it gets knocked down a peg or two, it'll be in the top 5 space games forever.
Simply for lack of good space games to push it lower. :p

X4 does look good. And some SC gameplay videos are looking quite nice too.

I still want an I-War reboot.

Anxious to see Bethesda's Starfield to be honest, although it might be a completely different type of game than ED.
If it has a new engine, new animator and is in VR it'll probably be my new obsession, they've been dragging me back since Daggerfall but their engine / animatics is so clunky now (even tho' I'm <re>playing the crap out of SkyrimVR), I'm not sure... Ahh, who am I kidding, I'll get sucked right back in, they know story, they know gameplay, they know how to reward the player, they know how to hide the grind so it's fun...

So, that's two players lost, then? [haha]
I have a sneaking suspicion that as soon as the "other game" looks like drawing players away in large numbers, FD will come up with a stonkingly good version which they have been holding back on us all this time. (Like legs , or dinosaur hunting .... that sort of level of game).
3 - just deleted it off my SSD, will wait for Drop .4 and the rumoured paid DLC (I doubt either will be in Q4), to see if it's worth reinstalling; rather doubt it will be unless they bring in an actual game designer.

"Rule" is a strong word, and I dislike this idea that games are thrown in some strange death match. Yes, sometimes games released in same time will fight over community and one will lose, but I doubt when newscomer will come, it will do same things and will be liked by same people in this case.

Also said that to roll out such game is extremely complex and not only takes lot of money, but lot of know how. Despite what your boss might say, not everyone is replaceable.

So rule? No. Everspace, X games, even EvE is still going strong. Each game has it's own community and there's lot of people playing some of them in same time.

If you mean some MMO like, then I don't see it happening any time soon. SC is a bust, and any other newcomer will have to prove it is way better than ED at release to gain any traction.

Who cares? Enjoy what you want from them all.

Also this.

It is their Mass Effect. So yes, different game.

To make any game compete with Elite Dangerous or Eve Online now will require a lot of cooperation, study and funding. That's why many will either be delayed, abandoned or cancelled

If ED is still here in 15 years then you can say it's taken Eve's grown. This for me at least ED does not rule anything maybe it has a slice of something but other games are coming that's going to eat away at that slice and FD dont seem to be doing themselves any favours of late to hold on to it.

Replace the word "rule" in the thread title with the word "terrorize" and the question becomes much more relevant.

X4 but will need a year of patching.

X is trade empire game. ED is space commander game.

Star Field Bethesda will do Elite I think.

Completely different game :)

Also there's a kicker. It is not that profitable to begin with, despite what people might say.

SC? People forget it is money SC has collected via pre-sales of digital assets over 4 years. For regular game it wouldn't be enough to keep solid sized studio open to support game fans hope SC could be.

I know that there are different types of space games now: MMOs, survival, management, building and destroying, trading and scavenging, exploration and discovery, first person, strategy etc. Space games are coming to do wonders

But the most prominent characteristics include:
They are normally sandboxes
They involve massive multiplayers
They are mainly PC games
Their navigations are usually in first person.

The upcoming games now are trying to suit and please every player. ED does not have to be like 'transformers' to suit everyone to stay on top. Indeed FDev can ruin itself trying to do so.

Eve is a space MMO. It has all the properties that define every modern space game. It's just that it is not so real. For example, docking is not live and the shape of the spacecrafts are awkward.
