General / Off-Topic How many ppl have already dumped windows 10 from their computer

...and if you build your own PC, Windows 10 has zero control over what goes on in your bios.

Which brings up an interesting point: Where, if I'm building my own, do I purchase Win10 from? I haven't seen it in any store that sells anything involving technology or computers (and I used to constantly see boxes for Win 7 and 8 all over the place). Once built, it'll boot up to the BIOS, sure, but where's this OS getting into the hard drive from??

You can buy Win10 from several places on the internet. However... if you do a little shopping around, you can get hold of genuine Win7 keys dirt cheap. The current iteration of the Win10 installer disc (which you can freely download from Microsoft) will accept a Win7 key (as long as you do it before the end of July). Just remember that if you want Win10 Pro you must purchase Win7 Pro keys.

This is where I got mine, 90 bucks. http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/software/operatingsystems/kw9-00017.html

Loaded in from a USB.

Personally, I would avoid anything downloaded from the internet like the a judges opinion in a trial of a politician

I upgraded to Win 10, from Win7 pro, on three PC's (One a i7 super-gamer) a couple of months ago! Have had no problems whatsoever, so kinda wondering what all the fuss is? One of the best interfaces I have seen and boot speed improved!

You're a very suspicious person! ;) You can download Win10 ISOs direct from microsoft. :)

I was referring to the key. I got everything loaded on a M$ pen drive, it went into my machine sweet as a nut. I later gave the pen drive, complete with the OS to someone overseas who has very slow access and already owned a legitimate key. (From a W7 to W10 upgrade)

You can get these from a number of sources. But with Apple now locking phones that people have paid for because they have unauthorised (successful) repairs, it seems these people have legitimate control of our property.

Frankly, I wouldn't put it past M$ to cause problems for those that use dodgy keys. Come to think of it, it would be somewhat more justifiable than Apple turning off phones that have unauthorised repairs, but there you go.

But then, Apple have managed to manoeuvre themselves into an eternally defensive position.

While dodgy keys are certainly available (and should be avoided like the plague) I was referring to genuine non-dodgy ones. I did specify that. They are not downloaded, the CoA stickers are mailed to you in the post. I bought a small batch of them myself to install Win10 onto some PCs that I was building, and that's how I got 6 genuine Win10 installations for 75 quid. Not a bad saving!

If you do the update install from earlier Windows, you have about a month to undo that upgrade and it'll roll back to how it was before. It is a fairly quick operation when I tried it once, and took about 5 minutes. I don't know what happens to anything you install after the update, but assume it will be lost and need a reinstall.

Thanks for the advice. I might be slightly over a month now, but it's still worth a shot. And I'm still firmly on the learning curve with ED as well, so not too late to chance my progress either...
