How to get Elite in VR looking CRYSTAL CLEAR.:D

With beta 2.2 V5 you can now put HMD quality to 2x and don't have to use external tools anymore. Just use the supersampling to 0.65x like before and change the hmd quality to 2x, seems to give the same quality as old 2x file editing for steamVR and 0.65 supersampling in game.

Nice, thank you for posting this.

I'm a bit disappointed though that this took so long, I had suggested adding the increased slider range back in April during the 2.1 beta, this was before the SteamVR render multiplier override was discovered. Better late than never I guess :)

if you use boths fps goes down below 80 on my (Gtx1080)

this update is not so good for vive and 1080 owner's - HMD limit is set for 2.0
shame cos before I had 2.2

I haven't tried it, but I expect that this gets multiplied on top of any multiplier you've set in your SteamVR config. Assuming that's how it works, then if you set the HMD quality slider to 2.0 and SteamVR's renderTargetMultiplier to 1.4, you'd end up with 2.8 overall.

I think game HMD Q. overwrite somehow our's SteamVR SS . During one test I had 2.2 (steam) and game act normaly (90 fps) after set HMD Q on 2.0 and SS 1.0 in game.
Also I don't agree that OCT + OCT means good visuals fo Vive. We should use max HMD quality settings. Actually I'm looking for a line in ED graph. config file to set 2.2 or more. Any help welcome.

Steamvr render @x3 and ingame ss @0.5 looks good and perform well for me with a gtx01080/cpu4.4GHz and always on reprojection in a High intensity RES ice ring. It lower cpu latency and push graphic card to limit, coupled with always on reprojection, it get rid of the blur when interleaved repro used to kick in and offers great immersion.

I do prefer in game HMD Q 2x and SS 1.0 also SteamVR now 1.0, with alway on reprojection. FPS lost only during intesive fight @ Combat Zones
shadow off, blur off , aa off, medium distance rendering.
Tryed also Atlas974 settings but 3.0 x 0.5 = 1.5 only , text was too hard to read for me...

nothing too surprising (if u re talking about visual quality) as 1*1.5=1.5 and 0.65*2=1.3. the last one sets a lower resolution for the SS.

i guess so, but i was wondering about one thing, hope that anyone can confirm or prove me wrong:

the end result is multiplicative but those are still two separate transforms. if for any reason you prefer the external tool (or the new HMD setting), because it does the job better or has a wider setting, then there is no reason to do SS at the source, hence:

- the logical thing would be leaving it at 1x, meaning no transformation at all, less work
- 0.65 would actually be downsampling, which can't possibly result in better quality no matter how much you super sample after (the opposite in any case), so there should never be a reason to do that (other than being on very limited hw and a small display, no after processing).

or did i get it all wrong?

Hey there,

Well to be honest u got it a bit wrong as SS isn't simply streching the picture and then getting it back to native resolution.
It enlarge the resolution at which the calculation will be made. the point of ED SS down to 0.65 was that VR SS seemed to work faster than ED SS.
This way we gave less work to ED SS and more to VR SS gaining performance on the way.

I hope I ve been understandable as english isn't my born language ^^

The game seems to have some issues with sizing textures for UI panels inappropriately, resulting in blur (texture is too small) or blocky / shimmering text (texture is too large). I'm guessing that setting in-game SS to less than 1.0 has the side effect of getting the internal textures created at a more appropriate resolution, and that this helps improve text legibility at the downside of making edge artifacts worse. But hard to tell without knowing more about the rendering pipeline.

thanks! yes, that dismisses the quality argument. but still: how can be scaling by 0.65 in any context be more efficient than scaling by 1 which means no scaling at all?

weird, but plausible.

i reckon i haven't experimented much with it. i did give the debug tool a shot and i could say it was somewhat crispier, but my sight isn't that good anyway :D so not really worth the hassle, i'm doing fine with ed settings only. just curious.

I'm finally getting pretty good results again on a GTX 980, with reasonably stable framerates in a RES. My card is slightly oveclocked, but I think there's enough headroom to work without this. Here's my settings in case it helps somebody.

Nvidia driver 373.06 (I had been using 372.x which has known issues with VR framerates). Set power management mode to "maximum performance" for elitedangerous64.exe, this helps avoid crashes at low GPU load for overclocked cards. (Known Nvidia issue, voltage mismatch at reduced clocks.)

Elite Dangerous settings: VR low, disable shadows (that had a big effect on keeping framerates usable). Optionally, set SS=0.65 and HMD quality to 1.5 to get text looking sharper.

SteamVR settings: default render target multiplier (1.0), always-on reprojection off, allow reprojection off.

I use the golden ratio 1.618 and it truely works a treat to get rid of those nasty marching ants :
2160x1200 = 2592000px x 0.65 = 1684800px x 2.268 = 38211264px
2.268 - 0.65 = 1.618

running a 4770k at 4.4ghz 2400mhz ram and gtx1080 at 2088mhz and 5400mhz ram
I have tweaked so many settings in win10 to reach maximum game performance increasing app prioritys and blocking unecessary background apps etc nvidia cp setting and game files
My game works fantastically well even at the high settings

Galloping galaxies ... I gather from another post of yours that you are also using 1080 + CV1 like me ... I haven't dreamed of touching this kind of stuff, will it make much difference if I do?

Wow, repped - that's some awesome tweaking! One suggestion I'd throw in there which may (or may not) help some people reduce vertical shearing, especially down on planet surfaces (I'm using a GTX 970 with a 1080p monitor) - set Vertical sync on for EliteDangerous64.exe in the NVIDIA control panel and turn in-game vertical sync off. After much experimentation I found that this setting completely eliminated shearing for me. Also note, if you have an Oculus (but sometimes choose to play on the monitor), the OVRService stops NVIDIA vertical sync from working. You can however easily set up two desktop shortcuts to stop and start this service as required. I've described this in the "Ugly" section over here ...
