OR problem with laptop

So, I have followed alots of links and how to setup OR for E.D, but failed every time. For some reason, when I run E.D, my primary screen display OR view, I went into settings and changed to secondary for OR, but when I hit apply, the game crashes everytime I hit apply. OR work with other games with laptop, but for some reason, I can't get it to work with E.D..... any help is appreciated.

I can give you this information based on my personal experience to make it work, and what I (subjectively) find makes it look the best for me: [please note that this information is based on Nvidia graphics cards, I have never tried with AMD]

1. Install and calibrate the OR, make sure you got the current version of the SDK

2. For ED you need to set the Rift Display Mode to "Extend Desktop to the HMD" (you can do that when you right-click the OR tray icon and choose Rift Display Mode)

3. If you want to supersample the game (in order to make the image clearer) on an Nvidia card, go to the Nvidia Control Panel, from there you go to the "Change Resolution" option, click on customize and create for example a 1440p setting, and enable it in-game [I am not sure if it's just me, but it seems that sometimes when you change the resolution to supersampling it doesn't apply it immediately? Instead I had to relaunch the game?]. Here is an article with more infos. Please note that your machine needs to be quite powerful to do that, but it really makes the text much easier to read. [I saw that you can set a super-sampling option in-game too, but haven't tried that, and not sure if there is a difference in performance]

4. For some people (including myself) it seems the performance is a bit better if you disable the other monitor(s) while playing. That's a bit fiddly initially, it's best if you keep the Nvidia Control panel already visible and centered beforehand. Just go the the panel and untick all the other screens so that it just leaves the OR. Then when you are finished playing the game just turn off the Rift (on the device) and it will switch back to your other monitor. If I want to play ED again, I just run the launcher and log in, then turn on the Rift (which will then turn off the other screens) and hit the "Play" button and get into the game.

5. Set the eye distance from the IPD config tool. When you calibrate the OR you can see a value for eye distance, take a note of that value. Then go to your app data (you can find it under for example C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics\Settings.xml - or similar) and find the line with IPDAmount and set it to your value that you got from the calibration tool (for myself I have 0.0678 for example)

6. Set the HUD color to some green-ish tone which will make the text much more readable. In order to do that, edit the GraphicsConfiguration.xml which you can find in your game folder (for example: your_games_folder\Elite\Products\FORC-FDEV-D-1002\GraphicsConfiguration.xml) and find the section GUIColor/Default and change the colors to something like this:
<MatrixRed> 0.18, 0, -1 </MatrixRed>
<MatrixGreen> -1, 1, -1 </MatrixGreen>
<MatrixBlue> 0.17, 0.31, 1 </MatrixBlue>
I found those colors in another forum thread around here, and it worked for me. But please note that every time ED gets patched, it will overwrite those and fall back to the previous defaults. So you will have to change it again. I think someone might have done some tool for that to make it easier for you, but you would have to check around to find it.

Some information here might be redundant for you, as I suppose you have already done those steps in order to get the other games to work, which you mentioned you play using the OR..

But if you follow these steps, and also disable the other screens (if that is ok for you), you might not run into that problem with the crash on secondary screen.

hope this helps somehow!

Rift for exploring

Hi,

thanks for all the hints.
I got my Rift working fine with ED. Still need to test the HUD colors, though.
One thing I noticed and what means I am not using the Rift regularly is that the stars are very blurry compared to the crystal clear image on my monitor. I know the resolution is different.
But for exploring, especially in the early stage, when you try to spot moving pixels for planets outside your scanner range the monitor works great. The Rift however is completely unusable to me as every point of light has a large blurry halo around it.
Anyone else has the same issue? Or uses the Rift for exploring?

By now I have the upgraded scanner and do not need to look for moving pixels, but I still feel the immersion lacks a bit?

Thanks
mh

Yeah I find the resolution lacking too, and esp the screendoor effect. But it is a bit better with supersampling, if you have the option (ie good enough hardware), also you will see that the HUD color helps a lot (though not with the stars, they are still kinda blobby). But yeah I did explore with it too, using parallax method to find other objects, and it worked well enough.

All in all I think it still needs at least 2-3 generations of hardware updates before it really "gets there" (to a place where it's starting to be "really cool", though I already love it a lot and wouldn't wanna go without it :D )

I have a GTX 980 coming in today and I'm wondering if anyone knows if the latest Nvidia drivers are functioning with the Oculus DK2 and Elite. If not then which driver version should I look for?

Thank you

The latest ones work just fine, yeah. There was a dodgy one, but we're past it now. :)

Got my DK2 about one week ago and while it works I've been having a hard time getting any decent performance. Maybe I'm being delusional with my (partly) old hardware, but with people reporting different things about what hardware really matters when it comes to the rift I dunno.

I've managed to eliminate most of the judder when tracking head movements, which was my main problem for quite a while. The problem now is that although the judder is mostly gone, I now keep getting sort of a motion blur effect instead. The only things I haven't tried yet (I think) is switching from HDMI to DVI, disconnecting the separate power adapter and disabling hyper threading, but I wonder if I'm trying to fix something that's never gonna get resolved without a new CPU, more RAM, etc? Most of my specs are listed in my signature so I would really appreciate some input from the rest of you guys/gals, who probably know more than me about what can be expected with my setup.

What I've done so far is:

* Bought a new GTX 970
* Upgraded my drivers and the rift firmware
* Set custom resolution for the rift (for better sharpness)
* Switched on and off most of the 3D settings for ED
* Switched the rift to primary and secondary display
* Switched USB ports (both 2.0 and 3.0 tested)
* Switched between 60Hz and 75Hz
* Connected the tracker directly to the headset
* Disabled CPU core parking (was already at 100% anyway)

So well, I'm at a bit of a loss here and I dunno if I'm just in need of new hardware or if something else is messed up. =(

One thing about the rift and the blur, it's far, far worse if you are in dark region. I spent ages trying to figure out why is sucked until i left the nebula i was in and then it was much better

Motion blur can be tied to something called 'low persistence' and it is a primary function of running an experience in 'Direct-to-Rift Mode' I applaud your progress in reducing judder, as it says in the Oculus Best Practices to sacrifice all-else before accepting anything under 75 (DK2). We as users need to remember that. Elite Dangerous is a VERY beautiful game, capable of bringing even the strongest systems to a crawl; ON ONE MONITOR...

I wish to also address the 'halo' problem people are having with lighting. I've noticed I get halos on my cockpit lights, but not distant stars or planets. This could be due to my absolute DEMAND for highest frames possible. I don't buy the best hardware, I just deal with the lack of eye candy. Currently running 2 760's in SLI and I STILL have the lowest possible settings in graphics and I STILL occasionally get judder.

One thing that caused the biggest problems for me was Supersampling. I had AA disabled and tried to Supersample within the Elite menu. I nearly tossed lunch all over the cockpit before requesting dispatch. o_O I will try Supersample within nvidia control panel as suggested and give it another go.

One thing that provided the BEST improvement of my experience was the day I found the HUD color changer. As an Oculus Pilot I've seen numberous videos of OR:ED users with the orange hud and I find myself screaming, "WHY?!" lol M.Abrash from Team Oculus has written an article explaining why displaying a red is much more problematic than displaying a green on pentile displays. Serisouly, google it; it's a fantastic read and will make you a better Rift User.

I have a shipment due to arrive within the week to add motion to Elite Dangerous. I have a twitch channel that I am shameless plugging here and anyone interested in my setup (when it arrives) can ask questions about it. Or feel free to email captain.oculus@gmail.com To find me on twitch, google my name.

Good Luck CMDR!

My screen keeps turning off and on for both my monitor and my DK2. I am in extended mode and set my DK2 to secondary in portrait, double checked 75hz and I cant get this to work. This is horrible. Spent 60 bucks for this not to work. The only reason I even bought this game was for the Oculus. Can anyone help please?

Downgrade to oculus runtime 5 dont use the lastest runtime 6

Really ? I haven't played in a while but last I did runtime 6 was stellar in extended mode or are you talking direct ?

You can get it working with 0.6 and windows 10 with some fiddling. Search for DK2 Fix... But you have to remember that the DK2 is a developer kit and nothing can be promised...

Though I understand the upcoming 1.5 Elite is working with the 0.7 SDK now so hopefully we can update to 0.7 and have the direct monitor support... but don't expect proper support until 1.0 is released in December...

Hi all
Just waiting for my dk2 to be delivered (yes I can't wait). Running win 7 as I'm aware of the probs with win 10. Is it just a case of downloading the 0.5 driver and running it on that for the time being? Quite new to this and elite

You will really enjoy both. Yes 0.5.01.1 or similar but yes 0.5 is supported. Run extended etc etc.
