More like Vive 1.5 I think. Looks like a resolution bump to the headset. HTC like oculus has mentioned not to expect a vive2/oculus2 anytime soon.

Doubt it will be Vive v2.0... more Vive v1.5.

Still, it'll be interesting to see what pans out at CES.

Well if it simply updates resolution, maybe expands fov? improve ventilation? and keeps various bonus it has currently?
Then yeah, it will be more then fine.

I really don't hope that is so, unless they've found a way around the amoled/oled issue with full black, where it causes purple smears because switching from fully off to on takes longer to switch back on then normal.

I hope they use these panels instead.

"A new display from Samsung targeting use in VR headsets packs a whopping 2,024 x 2,200 pixels into a 3.5″ form-factor, delivering an impressive 858 PPI, nearly twice the 460 PPI of the Rift and the Vive. The display is also capable of a 90Hz refresh rate and 100 nits brightness. From a raw pixel-count standpoint, Samsung’s new VR display has 3.4 times the number of pixels in those headsets."

A few simple photos from a Reddit user back then.

Fingers crossed, I hope this is an upgrade that can be applied to existing Vive headsets, instead of just a new retail product. That would be swell.

I believe those panels are a little ways off yet.
So most likely for second version of vr.
But Amoled is still a pentile structure so they still have half as many blue and red pixels as green.
Its the green pixel count they report.

If the second version of VR will use Oled at all.
Quite a few pointers towards just regular lcd panels like the pimax, not the same panels as the pimax but similar low persistent tech.
Would atleast allow full RGB array of subpixels.

And decrease the whole panel lottery that is a huge problem for Oled.

Highly unlikely.
This will be a minor resolution upgrade and lens shift for the vr experience but also a plattform for the new lighthouse system.
The new lighthouse units will not be compatible with 2.0 sensors. But 2.0 units will work with 1.0 lighthouses.

Well, the new unit might not be available now. It might be an announcement of a coming product.

Of course, This is what CES is for. Announcing products to be released in the next few months.
But the fat they are teasing a new set now and we expect from before both the new lighthouses and knuckle controllers to be about ready q1/q2 of this year it fits.

And since v1 sensor devices do not work with v2 lighthouses they would need a new hmd anyways.

If they go for 1440x1600 like the rumour said, I think they should have waited and made a bigger step. I will probably not get the new one if that is the case. Even though it has eyetracking and other new features. We will most certainly get to know tomorrow.
