HTC Vive resolution and  focus

I would just like to hear from FD on what is happening, the problem with no news is, it invariable means bad news. We need a short post just to give us a time line, or to put it another way 'hope'

Saying that, I have tried to go back to the 2D screen and I cant, I am spoiled. I cannot get into the game. At this stage I will (unfortunately) stop playing before going back to 2D. (even with head tracker)

Been watching this for weeks and weeks and getting increasingly exasperated by the lack of response from frontier. It's weird. Do they have a phone number? I really feel the need to speak to them.

TBH i think i'll join the "horde" and made some noise too on steam to be sure that we got some news or communications or to give other possible buyer a warning on the state of the Vive VR port ;)
Been a VR user since beginning of beta 2 btw.
No news from lastest patch note too.....

I've been playing with the Vive for a little over a month now and I have to say, that through all the SS tweaks and such it's gotten a bit more "bearable", it still is a bit of an disappointment. I'll also join the crowd demanding at least some info on the progress (if there is any) on this problem.
I mean it CAN be tweaked to be somewhat better than it is by default, but the point is that we shouldn't have to do all this stuff by ourselves.

Aparently there's no phone published: http://www.frontier.co.uk/contact/
However, google shows this site as a source for the phone number: http://www.cambridgesciencepark.co.uk/company-directory/frontier-developments-ltd/

It's funny, they mention these forums as one of the sources for customer support :)

The rift can not really compete technical level until they have room scale and it is no secret of how they solve this. This is not a technical issue for sure.

Nice one thanks. Perhaps we should start calling them up if they won't update us enough masse in this official customer support thread?

Carmack's guide to avoiding aliasing in VR (and anywhere else)

https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=1818885715012604&id=100006735798590

TL;DR, with layman's comments:

  • Generate mipmaps for every texture - according to /u/CrossVR on reddit, ED neglects to do this for its text textures (-)
  • Use MSAA for rendering - this precludes using deferred rendering, as ED currently does (-)
  • Don't use techniques in shaders that can increase aliasing (?)
  • Avoid high frequency geometry that can alias - ED, especially in stations, is full of fine lines, grilles and wires (-)
  • Dynamic shadows are expensive to get right - but I think ED mostly gets it right, or I have learned to ignore blocky, low-res shadows (+)
  • Don't use specular highlights on bumpmaps - I think ED does this a lot in hangars, but haven't noticed a problem arising from it (?)
  • Use gamma correct rendering, usually done as part of physically based rendering (ED has this) (+)
  • Avoid unshared vertexes (haven't noticed these in ED) (+)
  • Avoid trilinear texture filtering (?)

Giving a total score for ED of +3, -3, 3x?. So there's hope and scope for improvement. It will be interesting to see whether the deeper rendering changes mentioned by FD as the eventual solution to Vive rendering problems include a move away from deferred rendering.

Hey Vive Commanders!

When this patch gave no improvement or update whatsoever on the state of Vive VR I have decided to stop being passive as well - there is a limit to patient waiting.
I have backed this game from day 1 with a hefty sum and I feel bitterly cheated with my investment - we made this game happen and yet we don't even get a courtesy reply to our (gamebreaking) issues.
My sincere suggestion to you all - please file the Vive situation as a bug report. Every single person.
I have done my share - https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php/105-PC-Mac-Bug-Reports
Uncle Vive wants you!

Best regards,
T.

P.S. For "no Oculus deals were made" it's very impressive how many of the games/companies that were tied close to Oculus are magically incompetent and incapable of fixing Vive issues.

I'll report the bug tonight when I have more time, but I sincerely doubt it'll change anything. Next week, if there's still no reply, I'll go public with this and start moving things outside FD. Twitter and Steam to start with. I've never posted a bad review in Steam, but if this situation doesn't change ED will have my first negative review. I suggest we all do the same... if you don't have twitter at least report this to Steam asking to remove FD as a Vive supported game.

I doubt that'll do anything... we've been asking for an answer for months and didn't get a single decent answer. A phone call has no weight, no repercusion outside FD. Facebook, twitter and steam are better ways to go IMO.

Well, I don't actually like the fact that my first review on steam is a negative one but oh well. I don't have twitter and don't intend to join that flock anywhere soon but maybe the issue gains some more traction when we start complaining visibly on steam.

I need to remember updating it to positive as soon as things are fixed

Would not worry about it to much, the bad reviews are starting to mount up on steam, just hope FD start to listen.

Waist of time opening a ticket, they just close the ticket and never reply.

I bugreported it a long time ago. They don't care
I think they care but they conduct their public relations like Valve: they don't speak until they have something to share. That's caused Valve some serious dust-ups with their communities over the years, as radio silence is often interpreted for the worst. Their general theory is that telling people what they want to do but is not yet done creates delivery date expectations that they may not be able to keep, so they say nothing.

Maybe Valve is right, because the reason many of us (I was basically the originator of these concerns back at the end of March) are growing bitter is because FDev representatives DID speak to us here on this forum and said they're working on it and gave us no reason to believe a fix/solution would go into August and potentially beyond. Not saying anything at all is probably better than saying something and failing to deliver in a reasonable time period.
