I don't like the new ice worlds.

Update: Found some nice looking terrain after a few hours of looking. This is by far the best I've seen from Odyssey.

I still think Horizons looked better, but only by a little. Here's to hoping that they'll improve the tech a bit. The rest of the planet types are still just a bunch of grey repeats.

I wonder if this point form the EDO release patch notes may have something to do with the lack of interest on the planets.
  • Large update to planetary tech, including reworked systems, terrain types, blending, craters and colouration - this also includes the reworking of some terrain materials to be flatter, for better SRV navigation
They may have over done it with the flattening.

Good point...

"Large" update to planetary tech, they say...

I mean what flawed logic. Just because we can't drive easily on interesting worlds, doesn't mean we have to drive on flat pancakes either.

I hope its one of those things that gets balanced, and sooner rather than later.

I feel like the detractors and whiners are deliberately finding the galaxy's most ugly planets on purpose just to crap on the game. If it was ugly in Horizons, it'll be ugly in EDO.
I actually want this game to succeed. whenever I go ice world hunting in horizons I find maybe 1 out of 3 ice worlds that look amazing. You're right, they all don't look perfect.

yet I've scanned 50+ ice worlds so far (not a lie) and they all look the exact same. I just found a nice canyon area, but to be honest with you if it's that rare to find something memorable then I don't want the planet tech altogether.

Did I do it yet? did I crap on the game? Maybe I need to take laxatives?

Couldn't find a good one for this even though I referenced avgn for search

JAROJINANH system, JAROJINANH 6 E planet
Nice moon you got there. I went there myself since I think the new planetary tech is kind of garbo, and got some comparison shots. Running at GTX 1060 6GB on High preset at 1080p, for reference.

Nice screenshots, yeah? Near the twilight zone where things look pretty photogenic. Okay, let's head towards local noon on the same planet.

Eesh. The harsh light of day is not kind to those LOD textures.

Here's some more shots from a no-atmo moon in a different system, again around local sunset/local noon.

I guess when Odyssey looks good, it looks pretty good. This little outing has made me come around a bit and now I'm a little more torn on whether I want to play Horizons or Odyssey for the next couple weeks. To be honest though, I see planets that look like the real stinkers in this thread more than the good ones.

I think I might lay the blame on this screwed up new lighting system. If it wasn't washing out the highlights and crushing the shadows so atrociously, you might see more texture details at local noon. As it stands, all you see is the low-res albedo texture which is nasty.

Bonus screenshots of the milky way taken ~100ly apart. What the crap?!?!

I'm praying they constantly update it in the coming months. I want it to be perfect for the console people who had to wait longer.

because currently, it's not in a state for them to enjoy.

Could be...
Maybe instead of reworking the small terrain materials, they reworked everything... and we get mostly flat surfaces with some pointy features 1-2km high that would had been 8 km high before...

No idea, but they did overdone things in the past.

edit:
Or
The improved planetary tech is more closer to natural looks (presumably natural looks) which could be way boring than the dramatic planetary terrain we had in Horizons (and i'm already missing it)

These are the images from yesterday's session.

Overall some of the planets are quite flat and I think their surface should not be that shiny, but I have found a few nice places to visit and explore.

I hope to find more of those soon :)

Been visiting a lots of planets in the hunt for g3 stuff...
I have yet to see a single planet with the dramatic terrain that was more frequent in Horizons

Like i've visited at least 40-50 planets and... they are mostly flat.
sure, they have craters, maybe some minor rugosities... but nothing dramatic
No canyons no mountain ranges... only some vague pointy stuff that look like the top of a summit and not the full mountain.

Rather than moaning, try going out exploring and searching for some nice views.

Icy moon about 280LY from Colonia.
That's nothing I haven't seen in Horizons (I'm talking about planet tech).

But to your point, I'd be okay if "nice" ice planets were somewhat rare, as it would give explorers another reason to explore. The same goes for "nice" atmospheric planets. If everything looked amazing, then there would be no sense of discovery and achievement in exploration IMO.

There have been a couple of screenshots in this thread that give me hope that this is the case, that there are indeed some really breathtaking planets out there to find, planets that really step it up a notch from what I currently can find in Horizons. I'm going through now and stamping those images with my "like" of approval. (y)
