The Gal map certainly isn't perfect but there's nothing you can't find a workaround for. And surely not worse than that of 3 years ago.
Look here FD, let me lay out some facts you already know...
The vast majority of your customers play Elite to enjoy the Milky way (FACT) you created based on 'what we know now' and what a blooming fantastic job you did! (FACT) ... some 3 years + ago...
Since then you have slowly but surely degraded your work (FACT), I would not mind if it had just stayed the same! But with each release your masterpiece gets another slice taken out of it. Please try to tread more carefully through the flowerbed you made because it's starting to look like a muddy puddle!
Now I'm a Software product manager by day and I understand the pressures of your boardroom and all the favours you have to pull to satisfy some of the big backers and investors, delivering those features you promised them and no-doubt they are still banging on the table asking when 'whatnot' and 'whatever' is going to be delivered..been there, burnt the t-shirt.
Now you have to strike a balance between what you promised the big investors and what your customers want.. because if you don't you will be delivering 'whatnot' and 'whatever' to a playerless server.. That's the tip of the iceberg though. Your once loyal player base will have gone, many trashing the reputation of FD and moving on to the competition.. Then you know what happens next right? The same investors you tried to appease in the short term will be very cross!
The answer to this problem is to tell your investors to sit the jolly well down and let you work your magic at your own speed and introduce their 'whatnots' and 'whatevers' when you are ready.
Now I understand you have to get the Thargoids out the door (2.4) so i'm not expecting any love in 2.4. But please, in 3.0 or whatever version ID comes next, can you show some love for the vast majority of your customers who backed you from day one... That's right, show some love for the explorers, because right now i'm on the edge and I'm confident i'm not alone. I Can't bear to see the exploration role get any worse, it's heart breaking.
Thanks for listening and spare a thought for the explorers in the planning of 3.0.... I hope to say 'Right on FD!'
Best regards

And here is a list of things that have got worse
Beige Bug
Terrain Nerf
Adding eye candy but no tools to find it
Not adding any new exploring tools
System Map degraded
Galaxy map degraded, verging on broken
Sky Map Degraded with 'dust'
Total lack of love for explorers
For Starters
Does anyone really do that?Extra credit for tasting the fuel tester tubes.![]()
Time to start taking some creative license and expanding what we can find out there. If eye candy is the only thing you will reward us with besides credits - how about making accretion disks and collided planets and dyson spheres and all sorts of crazy things. Dedicate an art team to making thousands of custom systems to find.
Does anyone really do that?
I suppose if you don't know what AvGas smells like, and you don't know what colour it is, then drinking the stuff could possibly be the best thing for the rest of the pilot community.
While that sounds incredibly awesome, a Dyson Sphere should be something extremely rare, like maybe if they introduced a second alien race who was super advanced, or even a long dead and lost race. Accretion disks and exploded planets though would be cool, but they are just eye candy. Exploration needs some meat to it's mechanics to go along with the scenery or it will just be more of the geysers we have now, which arguably didn't do much to actually improve exploration at all. Now, if they improve scanner mechanics to implement surface heat maps to indicate search zones which can then be analyzed and searched through and eventually narrowed down to where the actual geysers are, THEN we'd have some honest to Braben exploration gameplay to indulge in! Plus new mechanics which could be utilized interactively with all manner of new surface deep space content!
ok finally some DETAILS.I'll make a brief list and add it to the OP...

Having a different set of priorities for what I believe FDev should be working on does NOT make me a white knight.
Dismissing different opinions to our own helps nobody.
I wasnt calling ye one so no need to get a bee in yer bonnet...Im not following the thread so had no idea who was on it or what has been said. I read the op, repped him because I agreed and guessed quite rightly what would happen which is why I avoided it.
Im not dismissing yer opinion because I dont know what yer opinion is, although if ye feel somehow provoked on a personal level by my off the cuff remark, I can take a fairly good guess.
And tbh I just cant be bothered arguing about it anymore...whats the point? A circular debate and one is fully aware of how frontier feels about exploration, ergo its just players arguing over something that none of us can change anyway.
Im at the point where I fully agree with the op, but Im done exploring and suicided back because my heart just aint in it anymore. Words are cheap at this p0oint...only thing that will make me less skeptical is action cos like I said, words are cheap and we really have heard it all before and beaten that horse to the point of mutilation...nothing ever changes and nobody ever agrees and Im sick of it.
Ye wanna take it as a personal jibe? Fine...I cant unsay something that wasnt directed at anyone in particular. It was an off the cuff remark...I tend to speak my mind and not pull punches ^
- Conflict zones suck and are completely unrealistic
- The Engineers suck
- There are no NPC wingmen
- There are no real bounty hunter mechanics
- They didn't add anything meaningful to combat for the last 2 years
- etc.
This argument really goes both ways. And starting a fight between pew pew players and explorers is really stupid when we should just stay together and ask FDEV to improve the game for everyone.
I'm not one to get personally offended by some nobody on a games forum - that would just be silly.
If 2.4 doesn't bring about an improvement in the core game as promised, if existing features aren't expanded (multi-crew for explorers, engineer positions in ships etc) then FD is doomed.
Core improvements were promised for AFTER 2.4.
2.4 is all about the thargoids.
The old veterans are the clear winners here... we've waited sooooo long, who cares about a year or two now - or more if it has to be (and preferably before I die)![]()

After exploration receives this dev eventual love, can I get in line for them to actually focus on PvP for a change?
Well lets be fair. Combat mechanics of PVP have received probably the most attention of any aspect of the game to date. They've gotten the lion's share of the patch notes for every major release. That being said, yes the actual reasons and theatres for PVP activity are exceedingly shallow, and virtually invisible. Thus far, (apart from Salome) PVP events have been almost entirely of the community's making.
I would love to see real ship tracking mechanics for hunting down wanted/notorious players, less buggy instancing, consequences for clogging, and community law enforcement mechanics to keep malcontents in line and living in the shadows rather than dominating the scene. Also perhaps some kind of galaxy's most wanted list, and galaxy's hottest bounty hunters too. If they combine this with a more rich and varied Power Play that actually had human incentives in mind, and/or created a BGS sim were people could align to minor factions to fight off super powers, go to war with each other, and just generally organize a system of meaningful loyalties and conflicts, then maybe, just maybe we'd have the back drop necessary for meaningful PVP conflict.
