I must say, I'm pretty disappointed with the name plates they shower off so far,

What really vexes me about the whole thing is theres not a 'stock' one for free. I dont begrudge the idea of nameplates costing money, but I really dont see why there isnt a 'rubbish' stock option one. It feels very nickle and dimey

I agree. A basic, pure text option would be nice. I think it would be good advertisement for the paid and better looking "nameplate" versions in the store.

From the very answer you quoted: "Everything in the game will be purchasable with in-game Credits, earned from trading, bounty-hunting, etc. "

And let's not forget they've changed a bunch of things from the original kickstarter plan.

True.
But everything being purchasable in game was linked to credits being purchasable out of game.
When FDEV went with cosmetics only being purchasable out of game that changed.

There were several discussions about this in the DDF. FDEV ran polls and asked specifically about this in the DDF.
I know this is a long time ago, but some of it makes for interesting reading if you have time.

The discussions and polls above need to been in relation with the two subjects below, where the Vouchers II discussion is the main one.

Vouchers part II
Vouchers

Given the original proposals that FDEV came up with, and that FDEV have to make money, I'm quite happy with what we have now. I would prefer that the individual ship skins were made available separately at a comparable cost, but to me that is minor.

was that written somewhere officially, that we wont get free ones?

Im on my phone so cant go hunting for quotes, but its been mentioned multiple times in the threads about it since the feature was announced.

Basically, you can name your ship for free, but it only shows up on your UI. If you want a nameplate (so other can see it), it'll cost you an unconfirmed figure.

Thats sxactly my line of thought.

As always FD's level and quality of communication is lacking so we don't actually know anything other than:

1) There will be nameplates on sale in the store.

2) The liveries they showed off are very basic, which is fine if they are the 'free' option (i.e. included as part of the Season pass) but not fine if there is no 'free' option and they charge for nameplates.

3) If your ship does not have a nameplate then other players cannot see your ship's name on scan.

Ship Naming
● If it's not our ship and they have no name plates, then we don't know the ship's name.

In War Thunder I can literally take my decals and put them anywhere on my vehicles, at any size. This is how you do a decal system.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVw1FT4DAM8

Do you mean in that FREE to play game?

- - - Updated - - -

It seems that the ship naming is not fully implemented yet in the Beta:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/336641-Is-ship-names-from-players-not-supposed-to-show-in-HUD?p=5278540&viewfull=1#post5278540
So we'll have to wait until it is to see exactly how it's going to work.
Would also suggest that people were mistaken when they saw player ship names.

There seems to be a correlation with people who don't know the game with people who are for buying ship names.

Are you talking about "enjoyment over time" or "burst enjoyment"?

Do you want to look at the peak enjoyment or at the area created by time x enjoyment?

Enjoyment isn't that easy to measure ;)

LOL no.

I'm saying that you decide yourself how much you enjoy something and nobody looks at a clock and says "Well I had fun doing that for 100 hours and fun doing that for 3 hours so the 100 hours thing must be more fun"

Whilst you were playing ED for 100 hours, I was making love to my GF - I know which one was more fun ;)

I think it's worse than that. Some people have spent loads on the game with kicktarter, LEP's, the original cost of the game and Horizons and it hasn't been cheap. You only need to compare the game with other games out there and the ones mentioned in this thread and you have to ask yourself questions if you have even a slither of integrity.

How come free to play games offer more? Why are FD charging so much more for their game than other devs? Why can other devs allow modding in their game for free? How is it that devs that charge £30-40 for their games can throw in customization for free - because they do have integrity and see charging extra for something that should be part of the game as a ripoff.

ED cost twice as much as a AAA and they give you half as much and then charge you on top of that.

LOL

I guess that's very high bust enjoyment then.

Unless you say you made love with your GF for 100 h - in that case it's better enjoyment per hour (EPH).

Things get complicated if that 100 h of making love is only possible by enduring 1000 h of annoying behavior of your GF. In that case having 100 h of enjoyment playing a game and 1000h of no enjoyment and no annoyance could be more enjoyable in the end.

I'm honestly tired of you guys linking to that poll because I'm tired of explaining how it hurts your argument.

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/10029-Exclusive-Cosmetics-Poll

"Should there be cosmetics that can only be purchased out of game for real money?"

Most voted option: "Yes! Some cosmetics can be "purchase only"

Do you honestly think that, when people voted for that option, they thought some meant 99% of them?

I didn't know that you were aware of the threads and polls in the DDF, so sorry for pushing that on you once more. I hope some of the other people in this thread got something out of it.

I was responding to what you said about FDEV's statement that everything will be purchasable in game. In my opinion referencing that statement is misleading if you don't
include some of the history behind why that changed. That is what I wanted to address.

First, I was part of the DDF so I had my say (I just wanted to make that clear).
Second, the polls in the DDF are not really relevant. They are old, only a few had access and most of us were probably past our "use by" date. So it was probably a somewhat biased group.
My impression was that FDEV was very aware of that and in most cases our influence was very limited
The discussions in the threads however, are interesting in relation to why FDEV have chosen to walk away from "All items are purchasable in game". Again, that was the point I was trying to make.
Last: No, I don't think that people meant that all cosmetics should be "in store" only, although I understand why FDEV went that way. They want to make money of their product. And as I said, personally I don't have an issue with it. This is not an argument though, it's my opinion and carries little value.

Unfortunately this is a product of entertainment and it all boils down to personal opinion, sometimes dependent on your previous experiences in other games. FDev saw that opportunity and took it (fortunately for them and, in my opinion, unfortunately for the players) It's perfectly fine for you to have that opinion, and I hope you understand why some of us that don't agree with the current situation voice our opinions in an attempt to reach FDev and the rest of the community.

Something like this?
It's hard to find an exact example of the sort of thing I had in my head. I guess this is sort of close...

FD sent me down this mental path by talking about "plates". If they'd said "name decals" or "name stencils" or even just "names" then maybe what they've presented might have seemed more obvious. But using the word "plates" in the context of a spaceship's hull was a mistake IMO.

LOL well my point was that you don't measure enjoyment by how long it takes. Fun is highly subjective and there isn't one way to feel fun either. That's why I find it stupid when people start adding up value to try to argue how much fun a game is.

That's pretty much exactly what I weas thinking excepy my corners were more rounded and it was in brass......

;)

Not the rubbish we're seen so far.

I'm not especially fussed about cosmetic stuff in general but when something is implemented I tend to get a bit OCD about it being done right.

On that basis, I just thought I'd mention something that's been bugging me for a while.
No doubt others have mentioned it already but I wanted to "put it out there" for my own peace of mind.

The currently available ship-kits ALREADY obscure decals.
OohfGB7.jpg

Can I assume that Frontier will be raising their game with regard to the positioning of ship names?
I mean, if I'm paying real money for the ability to display a name on the side of my ship, I'd rather it wasn't obscured by the ship kit that I also paid real money to attach to my pretend spaceship.

If you dont mind I'll call that common sense rather than OCD. FD really has a habit of delivering very mediocre stuff for way too much in the store. Its all a 'charity for FD' kinda thing, but still. Its annoying.

Well...
I'm not THAT impressed with how the nameplates look.

But I'm weak. :)

A name and decal generator...
I would LIKE that! [yesnod]

On a side note...
I wish they could make those vibrant colours cover ALL the ship.
Like with the midnight paint job.
Or at least switch the grey with black.

Those grey areas are really unpretty.
Takes the vibrant out of it.
