I paid for a Space Sim, not a buggy mess with immersion killing pop up menus.

I must've missed the post where OP indicated ever even knowing who Ross is.

In addition, I'd be curious to understand why a digital animator could not provide someone with a phd in physics with any advice on how to design a videogame. What caused you to conclude that?
Well, the fact she have a PhD in physics, and he doesn't. That's a good starting point imo.

We're not talking about general game design advice (still, but whatever) but planetary modeling. To which his position is:"it's painfully simple, just use random noise!"

You can make up your own mind if that is quality advice.

Oh I agree, but they haven't put out a quality game either.

I'd say let's give em all the advice we can. They clearly need some.

What does a PhD in physics have to do with videogame design? Because it's planets? A lot of stuff is planets. If they especially budgeted for a physics PhD to program planets for them I'd say that's pretty excessive.

I honestly think that the only way to save elite is to rollback Odyssey planet tech, keep the bases and the additional 'content/gamplay loops,' but just roll the tech back to Horizons level and call it a day, FD have bitten off more than they can chew. I don't mind doing this even if it means getting rid of the tenuous atmospheres. Nothing, not one thing runs well and today's updates haven't done anything to improve the magic Frames Per Second issue that FD have seemingly put on the back burner along with their new communication strategy.
Is that possible? Can they just remove Odyssey's garbage and let us walk on planets as they were in Horizons? This is a totally uneducated question, I'm just curious if that's possible?

maybe the point is, that in the current game, you could replace nearly all 400 billion + planets in the game with pink golf balls and it wouldn't matter to how the game is played and what nearly all the players are doing in it.

Even on the planets that people are interacting with, the actual physics of the planets dont really matter and are not discernable in function or gameplay from everything being based on random whim.

i fail to see how the game needed a physicist at all for odyssey.

It needed someone who actually plays games and played elite dangerous to contribute something to it.

i mean, if we're caring about priorities and what matters and what's needed.

The fact she is used to mathematical model for simulation would be a good start.
Also, she is not alone, she has a team.

The funny thing about physicists:

They use mathematical models of reality all the time. And Elite with its Stellar Forge is exactly that, a mathematical approximation of reality....

You've put it a lot more eloquently than I could have. Totally agree.

I broke my pinky finger when i tried to play guitar as a kid, no joke.
That is so impressive I can't even tell if it's your fretting or picking hand! :)

But yeah, one of the cool things about learning a little is a newfound appreciation for experts. I kicked a football a bit for years. Made it to local amateur selection. Made me realize just how good pro players even at some ty club are. Been playing piano for a decade and it made me realize just how good concert pianists are. Life is better when you appreciate the expertise of others rather than try to be an expert in everything yourself. :)

I can't even remember what I had for lunch yesterday, and then you have people like this...

It was my picking hand it was not exactly the guitar, it was more of my usual clumsyness and i stumbled with guitar in hand, fell over it and squished my finger between the border and the floor :)

For the rest: Couldn't have put it better 👍

Well, I was wrong, 2dudes on the internet can fix easily what a team of specialists including a Dr specializing in particle physics (you know, where they model complex stuff with maths all the time) have trouble to fix.

Did you guys sent an email to Braben or something ?

Oh come on man, don't do me like that. I claimed no such thing.

Just felt like poking at the snobbiness here a bit.
