I still hate the new style of exploration even after adjusting to it.

After getting all my setup tweaked to achieve optimum FSS performance, I have to admit I really like it.

My main reason though isn't speed or the "quick overview" of a System honk.
It's the fact that I get definitive and reliable Info if there's something on or around a Body or not. That's an absolutely critical link that the original Scanners never yielded in old times.

PS.
Arguably though, I absolutely wouldn't mind Legacy Scanners still being available in Outfitting for those that prefer them.
Flying close to a body (old DSS distance) then could still yield the definitive Data i.e. on Geo/Bio Sites or anything else just as fine.
I see no reason both Equipment types couldn't peacefully co-exist and be equipped either/or. No harm done really.

But you'd have options to get that apple:

  • Use a ladder to climb and get it.
  • Climb the tree without a ladder to pick it.
  • Get a long stick and knock one down.
  • Chop the tree down to get lots of apples easy.
  • Shake the tree if its small enough.

There is no choice or middle ground with the FSS. Either complete the entire minigame to see the system info or don't. That's it.

I still explore a ton, I didn't quit exploring. I just do it now in other games I find more fun to play. NMS, Minecraft, Astroneer, and soon Microsoft Flight Simulator. I don't have fun exploring in Elite anymore thanks to the FSS.

You don't get it. That is the scenario you are currently in. You got a ladder or nothing. Its the only thing within your control What do you do? Walk away or use the ladder?

Only FDev can add those options not you.

What do you do when life hands you lemons?

Couple of things.

Why are you getting sucked into this crud? Because you decided you would by responding. I also read the thread, and decided not to respond. Until someone told me I should go away.
I am not playing ED, nor do would I have fun playing ED if I did. But that doesn't make it your call for me to go away from these forums, or whether I want to discuss this issue. That is up to me, or possibly moderation.

My advice to you, continue to have fun play ED, but be careful posting on internet forums where you might encounter and have to deal with opinions which are different from yours with the distinct possibility of discussions. Especially subjective experiences like enjoyment in games may differ from yours in other persons.

Keeping this in mind will greatly increase your forum going experience. :)

The question was self-addressed, I didn't really expect anyone else to answer in a meaningful way.

If people are genuinely having fun flogging this dead horse then they should carry on. Just don't take what I say on the subject seriously enough to take offense. You, Ziggy, should never go away, we would all miss you.

Anyway, that is me for this thread and this subject in general (unless beer changes my mind at some point or there is a sufficient change to the mechanics to make it actually worthwhile again)

What do you do when life hands you lemons?

In life there are always options, various ways to achieve things. Elite Dangerous isn't life, its a video game. I play games to enjoy myself, not to grind monotonous mechanics. I tried real hard to endure the FSS and it killed my enjoyment of exploration in the game. There is no alternative way of exploring in the game today.

Life is too short to spend time doing things I hate.

I'm glad you enjoy the FSS Kenney. Fly safe commander.

If you truly are an explorer...

Oh dear.

Personally I'm loving the FSS, it's a much better fit to my own personal perception of what a system analysis should look like but that's just my own view.

If someone wants an apple but don't want to climb a ladder to get it and quits... I guess they didn't want that apple that badly did they?

At least they could see there were apples to be had before they began. The new thing effecively blindfolds them and makes them put the ladder against each and every branch, individually, to see if there's an apple on it.

I'm glad you enjoy it, but it killed the game for me. There should be a choice, each with a plus and a minus.

And you might not be in an orchard anyway, but in a big thicket of brambles. You’d never know without taking the blindfold off though.

So we're picking apples and making lemonade now?

Arguing through analogies leads to anal logic.

Indeed. If I‘m picking apples, then the drink I’d be making is cider :) (proper, flat, hard cider, like what they has where I comes from, oo-arrrr)

That reminds me of the story about the Squirrel and the Octopus,
They started out as friends until the Octopus refused to lend the Squirrel his ladder to get some apples from the orchard, so one night the Squirrel stole all the lemons that the Octopus had buried for the winter and planted them in the orchard, and when they hatched all the apple trees rotted and died... and the Squirrel lived happily ever after and had Pizza delivered every day. 🍕

It’s a very sunny day here, and the patio doors are open. The neighbours are no doubt now wondering why I
am laughing like a hyaena 🤣🤣

Not being argumentative, but I prefer the honk, fss, then dss if need be.
If I don't need to scan, say a water geyser in a system, I don't hang out to set the locations. The payout is the same.
After running the FSS, I'll look at the system chart to see if there is anything fun to land on.
I'm open to FD improving or introducing a new exploration routine, but I'm pleased with the one we have, and it's better than the old way (IMO).

I originally proposed that the honk would pick up all the major bodies but the minor smaller ones would require the tool. It was a good compromise.

If you truly are an explorer you would use any tools necessary to explore. None of them would stop you. If you find something interesting you still can go out and look. This just "slowed" everyone down. Is exploration a rush?

I love the fact I can bring up all the details of the body I just found sitting near the star scooping.
The new era will probably make it even better for all of you "true" explorers that like "exploring" by not moving at all. You wont even have to sit near the star to see the system. You will be able to do it from the safety of bubble like a true explorer.

It's almost as if... now you have to choose where to spend your time, instead of being given everything without having to do any work. SHOCKING.

Hmmm. So how is someone suppose to choose whether to spend that ten minutes without having the information they can only get after the ten minutes?

Seriously, people trying to dress this up as laziness like yourself are flat-out trolling. Enough people have already explained exactly what their problem is, several times over the course of a year or more in some cases, that I refuse to believe anybody genuinely fails to grasp it. If you like the current way of doing things fine, nobody is telling you not to, but spare me the insulting crap you wrote there.

By the way you do realise that it's infinitely faster to tag a system with the FSS, right? And that even fully mapping it only takes the same time as fully tagging a system would have done with the old ADS/DSS combo?
