I tell ya, this game had better be good...

Instead of immediately building a machine for Elite, I bought a couple R9 280x (£480ish), a cheap motherboard (£50), and a single core CPU (£25) and build a cryptocoin mining rig to play with while I waited for the Gamma (£37).

A couple weeks back I was feeling pretty smug as it had just about paid for itself in two months. Of course I then got greedy, so am now £350, and one cardiac-arresting electricity bill out of pocket!

Ah well, c'est la vie! If I haven't melted them by then, I have a couple nice GPUs to play Elite on.

Talk about betting on a hunch...

...I don't know how much David Braben has spent on this game, but I've spent over 2000 squid so far!!!

Kickstarter pledge £90
Upgrade to Alpha £115
Saitek X52 £90
Brand new top'o'the line iMac 27 circa £2000.00(!)

Please tell me I'm not the only one? The most amazing thing is that I've spent all this wonga with my wifes blessing!

You are not alone. I bought premium beta, and I'm buying my first desktop ever, 7.1 headphones, wireless 360 for pc controller, and maybe the OR retail version (holding my breath on that one) when it arrives. Setting me back approx. 1800 pounds when I'm done.

It will be bought purely for Elite: Dangerous, but I'll be playing some Dark Souls 2 with my 13 year old son as well when it releases for PC april 25.. He is awesome at Dark Souls, so I plan on summoning him for every boss encounter, and whenever I'm in trouble. Which I'll probably be alot knowing Dark Souls...

And my wife gave me the "go for launch" as well. We have been together since back when I played Elite 2: Frontier, and knows how passionate I am about this franchise. She knew resistance would be futile... :)

I see your point and I think it's a good one. But would anyone spend 2K on their new stamp collecting hobby before buying a single stamp?

I'm doing it too..

I was also planning to buy the Rift, but FB can FO!

I feel your pain pal. It's giving me the willies as well...

Don't worry, was on the Star Citizen sub-reddit, there is a post asking people to admit how much they spent. Some guy came out and said he had spent 10k....I'll let you digest that for a moment.....10,000 dollars. What the hell?????

Much much more has been spent in that game for damn sure by individuals, just on ships and packages alone never mind and PC related paraphernalia. I remember reading about one guy who had bought something like 50+ ships in various ViP packages and on their own. Think he was approaching something like 45K

Bonkers.

So the guys spent more than I earn in a year....Damn I'm poor lol!

The secret is quite simple really, she loves me and would do anything to see me happy!

so easy.....

:D

Well for me, I've been toying with the idea of a new computer, this one is getting long in the tooth (Athlon XP with Radeon 4600 gfx card), so yeah I think I'm gonna struggle, or I run it on the laptop we got recently (i5 with Intel HD gfx).

Well, after buying a planet and a kickstarter special, then backing all the books, audio books, RPGs, etc. with not insignificant sums, and finally two kick-ass gaming PCs.... I daren't even start adding it all up

I was fortunate that fate handed me a modest inheritance from the passing of a bachelor uncle (at a ripe old age and after a very full and well lived life) just in time for ED. I didn't want to argue with fate :)

I built a £1,000 PC for Simcity, needless to say I was pretty (very) disappointed.

Then I discovered next gen elite was coming...

And its like Sim wot.....

I feel deeply for you. "Sim Hamlet" was as appealing as jumping under a non-simulated train.

Hopefully your investment will carry over, at least there is no downsizing here compared to the original. ;)

Alpha : 240 euros

über-laptop + saïtek + misc accessories = 2200 euros

2 450 euros more or less

But this could be the game of my life, the one I've been waiting for 25 years, so I guess it's OK :D

If this turns horribly wrong, I'll probably kill myself though :D

Yeah, I feel like that scene in Anchorman… "Well, that escalated quickly."

I already have a dual-boot hackintosh with an Ivy Bridge i7, 16gb RAM, and an overclocked 2gb GTX670. But found a good deal on a Dell i5 mini tower that I picked up, and thought I could use that as my ED box.

And stared at it. And stared at it.

And then just got finished building a new i7 Haswell with MSI-GD65 motherboard, GTX770, 16gb 2133ghz RAM, SSD, a couple of discreet LED fans… $1,500 later…

Oh wait, I need a monitor, don't I…?

I have to say I wouldn't buy hardware until the very last minute to ensure longevity.

I wouldn't recommend a 27" iMac as a gaming machine though. Really poor choice. I could buy a machine for £850 that would destroy it.

IMO should have bought a pre built machine from scan or overclockers, they've got some amazing kit and it would last you for years.

Well, that's assuming he's just buying it for gaming. Some folks just like Macs and hate Windows, and don't want to blag the thousands a Mac Pro would cost.

In terms of buying hardware, the Haswell is still the pick of the bunch. Intel's scheduled to bring something out the second half of this year, but that'll be after (probably?) ED is released. And doubt it'll be that much of an upgrade over what we have now. (I actually miss my old Sandy Bridge 2600k)

You may be right with some games out there, (I'm not a gamer, so my knowledge is very limited) but I'm running the alpha at 2560x1440 with settings set to high and it's as smooth as the proverbial babys botty.

For me, Windows XP end-of-life was the trigger for a new pc purchase.

I've brought across my old Nvidia 560 card from my old pc, though - will delay the purchase of a new graphics card for as long as humanly possible! If I can last until that new Maxwell architecture really hits its stride, I'll be delighted.

I am approaching 2000 euros, and have yet to buy an OR.

EUR
150 Pledge
140 Saitek X52
1580 gaming computer (good deal at my local computer store)
100 for a new desk (I now have two computers - so the kids will be able to use the old one, or risk losing their fingers if they touch the new one :))
1970 Total

I also want Voice Attack, but that might involve changing my (dutch language) windows 7 OS :( and that might bring extra costs.

PS. When does Beta start - I'm ready
