I understand why, but teen rating is a shame.

What a sad world we live in when "mature" is associated with swearing and pornography...

Yes, this is an odd paradox. Often when a TV programme or film is described as "adult", the description seems wrong to me. The word they're really looking for is "adolescent".

OP wants to paint a on his ship.
Don't we all?

We need childish humor. We need our ships to be named "Fartinator 3000" as well as dark aspects like seeing body parts of the pilots of the ships we blew up to bounce off our windows. Having gore smeared on the windows of my Corvette's bridge really drives the aspect of its pure raw power as a killing machine more.

Noone complaining cares that you don't hear an NPC swear occasionally.

They just care they have been stopped from doing it themselves.

Some people believe censorship is a sin, and shouldn't be allowed.. free speech amiright?

I don't see any benefit for the game that allowing swearing, 'adult' stuff and similar activites brings to the table. Personally I find it refreshing you don't see phallus symbolism everywhere, and that every other thing said is another word for various bodily functions, or inviting solo copulation....

I think grown-ups who NEED these things in a game are a bit less adult than the adolescents that tend to use it more.

Actually, for most of it, no... it's not about "swear words". It's about an overly enthusiastic filter that would reduce a ship name of "Assassin" to *****n. Or that would disallow the name of a northern English town because of a sequence of letters.

If it could tell the difference between a deliberately posted troll, and a word, or phrase that happened to be possible to misinterpret because it contains a swear in some language nobody has ever heard of... then it'd be ok...
But it doesn't.
It assumes you're trying to be offensive from the get go and treats us all like 3 year olds.

Wrong. It's too jarring to hear murderous pirates who have killed and stolen, pillaged violated the virginity of women against their consent, and to only say things as safe as "Gosh gee willickers, Mister Allon!"

Curious that, with the now 'open' chat between all groups in ED I saw 3 ##### out words in chat earlier and thought, hmm - profanity filter at work :) don't have any strong feelings either way, but quite happy not to have my tranquility disturbed by an unknown expressing itself :)

Thinks.... maybe I'll name my new Dolphin (second CMDR) Zarking Fardwarks :)

(pure Douglas Adams!)

Any filter that the viewer (reader) can turn on and off at will is fine. Got the kids around today? Turn it on. Whatever... And of course make it hard for minors to do so. You can't make it impossible, but you can make 'em jump through a few hoops.

It's the always on for everyone that grates. Well, default on for chat these days I guess, which is fine, except that disabling iit is so simple that it may as well not be there. The ship-names one is always on though.

Mate, I'd be happy if I could name my ship "The Assignment" (or similar) without being branded an offensive yout' by the swear filter.

Agree about the overly aggressive ship name filter.

As far as gore is concerned: over the years I've played dozens of FPSs, and the thing about the presence of gore, and what used to be euphemistically referred to as 'giblets' (even if you weren't playing at Christmas), was that I was generally so focused on what I was doing that unless the gore supplied me with useful information, such as that an NPC was hit, I didn't even register it.

Since gore would produce no useful information for the player in ship-to-ship combat, it would simply be a waste of processor cycles: the game is better off without it.

I don't know how they "train" the filter, if a random page from a newspaper, an encyclopaedia or textbook gets censored, something went wrong. Waiting for complaints on specific words to then whitelist them is a bit unhelpful for an communication medium.

But that doesn't happen, so your pointless comment was pointless.
