If you could make one change to E:D

One change only?....but there are soooo many things that need to change.

OK, the danger level of systems should reflect their status. An anarchy govt system should be a very dangerous place to go, a high tech democracy should be relatively safe. That one change would totally change the nature of the game in the bubble and you'd actually have to pay attention to your plotted route. Profits on trading, mining, bounty hunting etc could then be reflected on the level of danger for that system rather than the bland every system is exactly the same galaxy we have now.

Other top things to change...
Remove all of the 30,000+ cookie cutter factions and replace them with a much smaller number of tiered system factions, companies, official orgs, political bodies that actually mean something.
Remove engineers completely and everything connected with it and come up with another way of customising our ship performance
Offline mode
Allow Mods
Remove the current mission system and replace it with something interesting and dynamic
+ about 1000 other changes

+1
I wanted to write 'bring Michael Brookes back to steer this lost ship', but your simple way to put it appeals too. :)
Perhaps this is the best place to post this one ....

In the Frontier Careers, FD are seeking a
Senior Game Designer (Technical)
We are looking for an experienced Game Designer to help design exciting new content for Elite Dangerous.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design and setup of scenarios/missions
  • Design and implementation of mechanics and games systems
  • Take ownership of a feature from concept to final delivery
  • Testing and balancing gameplay
  • Providing specifications for game features and content
  • Using a range of software and in-house tools to create compelling game play experiences.
  • Mentoring/coaching more junior members of the team.
I've highlighted some key points which suggest that FD is trying to overcome weaknesses with Elite Dangerous that we have identified in a great many threads. This is not your 'standard' programmer; it is someone with sufficient experience who is capable of designing missions and can take the idea through from start to finish.

Desirable
  • Familiarity with scripting languages or tools (e.g. Lua)
  • Experience of game editing tools like Unreal or Unity and/or 3D packages like Max or Maya would be beneficial.
  • Experience and knowledge of Elite Dangerous.
  • Knowledge of procedural game systems.
  • Knowledge of Multiplayer and online gaming.
Let's hope they find someone who has played the game ! Anyone out there who wants to apply? :)

I would like more navigation tools in the Galmap. Measuring distances and angles. Extending lines thru points. Highlighting planes or shapes from points. Search functions based on these tools.

And the ability to select systems from the sky box.
Oh I like that if the star is in jump range you can target it and jump

Can I work remotely overseas? :D

One more thing I would like to see less spread sheet war between factions and see more explosions when I drop in to a system I want to say oh crap im outta here or jump in

In the far off distant times of ye-olden days, a Cobra had front and rear shields... It was possible to turn "your good side" towards the bad guys to let the other ones recharge a bit. Even more effective with front and rear facing beams :)
I do remember that. I would switch to the rear view and hit them. I would like to see them at least divide the shields into quadrants and you could only take down one at a time.

I'm surprised they don't see the huge paradox of requiring your ideas man to be a developer geek (no offense, I'm from that background myself).

FD, the person designing MMO content needs to be an MMO veteran with a clear understanding of multiple game mechanics and a special mind for imagining exciting content and how it will actually play out. If you require that person to also be a competent developer you are requiring an additional skill so high that the majority of that person's life investment is in that skill, diluting their competence at the other more important, creative skills.

You need a hot ideas man (or woman), you really do. Good luck with the search.

If I could change one thing it would be the missions system. Specifically haulage missions.

  • Less wing haulage missions
  • Add solo haulage missions up to 720 tons
  • Add long range haulage missions
  • Highlight missions that are going to the same station as missions you have already selected
  • Missions with fragile or hazardous cargo, bonus on completion, increased risk of failure
