Im sooooo bored thread

You know, like people who bring pee-bottles to their WoW sessions.

I had someone like that in my raid guild once. We stopped for a bio break after the halfway point in ICC one week, everyone is saying back in a few, except the main heals, who chimes in with "I'm good, I have a gatorade bottle under the desk."

I never did ask her if she was serious or just goofing off. I really didn't want to know. :D

Or the Battlefield equivalent. The ****bucket ;)

I've not played much at all including with the beta, and I'm also bored, so I don't think burn out is the only problem here. When the comparison is made to previous versions of Elite in that none had a story, I have to disagree. I played Elite on the speccy and the progression through levels and the missions were the story. But back then those things were enough, they were original, these days a game needs more for me.

Hopefully 1.3 will have something good, not long to find out.

A game with no monthly fee, for which I have paid the same amount to play as I have paid for other games and I am already well over 100 hours into it and have not scratched the surface of what I want to accomplish. Of all these other games I have played that cost the same I can probably name plenty of them that I have enjoyed or not, that I have put far fewer hours into to beat and or stop playing.

Perspective.

I've taken a couple of month-long hiatuses from Elite: Dangerous already. This doesn't surprise me, I do this with any game I play a lot. Sometimes I just get tired of playing the same game all the time.

Then, when I come back, I'm all re-energized and really enjoy it again like when it was new.

Burnout happens. The best thing to do is recognize when it's happening and take a break before it really gets you. But if you're already at the burnout point? Walk away for a while. Come back when 1.3 comes out, maybe. If you're really burned out, take a couple of months.

When you're ready to come back, you'll rediscover all the great things about the game all over again.

There's nothing wrong with walking away for a while if you feel the need. Nothing wrong at all.

Don't know if you were around back then, when I saw the title for this thread I remembered this... thanks for that lol.

This is what I did to minimize the boredom. Bear in mind I still love the game.

I left the ED Facebook groups.
I'm not as active on the forum as before, so my mind is not polluted from negative threads about how boring the game is.
I play on three screens (wish I had a DK2 tho).
I use a custom tweaked ReShade config with MasterEffect plugin to make space more "alive".
I usually have my own playlist of music for longer sessions (I LOVE the ED soundtrack, but rarely hears it).
I recently bought a HOTAS, the X-55 Rhino. THIS is something that makes the game a whole lot more interesting and fun.

Lastly, I only play for an hour each session.
All of the above helps keeping the game interesting and fun. Many times I've felt like ED was a job I had to endure. We need more than just credits.
I love the game from time to time but it's important to limit the play sessions, or you will quickly become bored.
I could play World of Warcraft for 15 hours a day. I can play Skyrim for 4-5 hours a day.

FD has been hyping 1.3 for a month now. I hope it will be just as awesome as they say.

Am i really the only one who wants some form of story (and not the "Quest to save the galaxy by the chosen pilot with flying skills above all others blah blah" cliche kind) but just something more than "hey you take product X to place A" or "kill target X and location Y". Geez just add something more interesting! I have high hopes for this game in the future but at the moment its still pretty empty

(ps love the game apart from the boredom it causes)

Although it is mainly an open play game just like Frontier Elite II was, Frontier: First Encounters did introduce far more structure that the earlier games had and was far better for it. I feel that is definitely something that is lacking at the moment in ED. There is only so many times you can do one of the limited careers before you start to get a bit fed up. Although I hate to say it this present game is a bit too much like the X games, although with far better combat and exploration. And I hated the X games - they were really dull and uninspired.

And I feel the same when I am playing until I hit on another thing to interest me, but it is more a matter of SEARCHING for something to interest me rather than just sitting back and being involved in the game and that is a problem that does need addressing. It shouldnt be hard work to be interested.

I am sure something will be in the pipeline though, there have been too many people saying we're bored for Frontier not to notice.

As for what they can add - decent dynamic missions, an overarcing storyline, Thargoids, some humans moving around in stations, communications pictures instead of spreadsheets, planetary landings, crew, passenger missions, maybe even a computer you can talk to - these would all help with the soulless empty feeling that pervades throughout the game at the moment. Its definitely something that needs sorting though.

But its still early days you know. For the moment take a break and play something else for a few months, dont get burned out.

When my son says to me, "I'm bored, I have nothing to do". I'll point out the fact that he is sitting in a room full of consoles, games, musical instruments, sports equipment and home entertainment system. That it is a nice day out and we are surrounded by beautiful country side, (and the dogs need walking). That there is a bus stop 100 yards down the road that could take him to the cinema or swimming baths or a dozen other fun places.

At this point he grunts, continues to sit there and remains bored.

The problem is that he has to do these things, but wants someone else to do it for him.

There are no stories in elite except those you make for yourself, but if you do that then the stories are infinite. If you want the game to do it for you, you bought the wrong game.

Thanks Dad

I don't think anyone expects an over arching story line and many don't want it.

The sandbox argument many clueless fanboi's bring up is the same as saying Notepad is boring and someone telling you 'use your imagination'
.
FD need to two one of two things.
.
1. deliver what was promised, background simulation with all the bells and whistles that will create story and situations we all want to experience
2. Custom micro stories as the OP listed with 2 or three missions or objectives listed into one.
.
The Galaxy needs to feel less clinical as well, things like the voice of the police pilot that just scanned you coming into comms or the pirate trying to rob you would add a lot as well as being able to speak to NPC ships, even the simulated voice in X games was better than some text you don't even read until after the fight.
.
Don't let FD off the hook over 'it's coming' this is a RELEASED game at a premium cost there are no excuses

I think using your imagination isn't a requirement, it's just one player's way of having fun. I don't use my imagination when I play most games because I let the game draw me the picture.

The bottom line is "are you having fun?"

If one player uses their imagination and has fun, then great. If another doesn't but still has fun, then also great.

If a player doesn't want to or isn't able to use their imagination and they're not having fun then it's time to do something else.

You don't need an imagination to enjoy ED. And having an imagination doesn't automatically make ED last longer for everyone. The only thing that matters is do you enjoy what you do?

If not, give constructive feedback and do something else. Or just do something else. There's no point to ranting about the game, there's no point hanging around playing and posting about a game you don't enjoy any longer.

I agree that some elements of the game can be enjoyed more with an active imagination but there's no point telling someone they need to use their imagination to enjoy the game. If they were predispositioned to do that, they'd not be telling us they don't enjoy the game.

It's much better to give examples of what they might do to increase their enjoyment. But accusing them of lacking imagination is no more constructive than them saying the game has no content.

Telling them they should do something else they do enjoy might appear unhelpful but it's still better than saying "the game is fine, you're at fault for not being imaginative"

Because there's no sense in anyone doing something they find boring.

Point is 'use your imagination' or 'it's a sandbox' or 'Soon' or 'in the early 80s......' or 'they are a small company' aren't an excuse for a lack of content. Most players that understand the game or at least what it was sold as know and don't expect a 20hr campaign (which would be massive by most console standards) we expect some small scripted content or better than anything as was promised a dynamically changing universe where stories are created and we just experience it or make small dents in the universe. a world rebelling against and unpopular leader giving some PCs a chance to airlift him from the station in orbit back to another system and PCs and NPCs you chasing down while you run. the fact that the dump gold large encounter is so popular and everyone knows what happens if you take it shows how poor the actual variation is. Just flying around in space as big as it is, with no tools to actually create content ourselves in any fashion, 'using your imagination' is like sitting in front of your powered down computer and pretending to fly spaceships.
.
A lot of people aren't having fun that's the point, they are forum watching hoping for some content or tools to create content until SC or whatever else comes out then we will all go over and moan on those forums :p

What is "content", in the opinion of those who say the game lacks it?

Content can be many things, in this instance I don't think people are considering new ships/stations or textures as content but rather things to do in the game. Here is an example:

FDev giving us distress beacons will produce the following player created content:

1. Player A runs out of fuel and sets off a distress beacon, player B comes with fuel to help them out and gets paid for their troubles.
2. Player A is a tricky pirate and sets offf a distress beacon, player B comes to help and is instead pirated for his fuel.

These are great examples of player created content and all it would take to enable this is distress beacons and some reasonable way to pay a fellow commander (we already know refueling is coming in 1.3)

That is the type of content many players are refering to in the context of these threads.
