Immersion breaking NPC names

NPC that borrow (not nod, let's face it) from popular culture. Immersion breaking or not?

  • No. I love running into all these characters and it doesn't impinge upon my roleplaying whatsoever (

  • Yes. How can I place myself in the future if I keep running into pre-millennial pop icons. Also, Bra

There's loads of female NPC's out there. At least, I see them all the time. Maybe I'm only dangerous enough to fight girls!

But I did run into Jimi Hendrix, and was so glad he didn't have a bounty. Would have felt so wrong firing at him.

Sorry, I didn't feel I needed to point out, as it was the raison d'être of the thread, that I was speaking about npc's with RL names. For instance I haven't come across nearly as many Janeway's, Ripley's or Roslin's (none actually) as I have Zaphod Something-or-other's which are ten a penny.

Most of the female names I've seen are pretty mundane, and not recognizable as famous, at least, not to me. I guess results will vary with computer generated names.

I do get a bit fed up of how many times you see the same name. I've killed Terry Negus twice personally. There may be 400 billions stars but there's at least two Terry Negus's for every one of them.

People use funky names all the time with their CB handles and internet usernames - MontyPython123, DirkDiggler, DeuceBigelow...
You then have obvious pilot Callsigns, because no-one names their kid Maverick, Goose, Iceman, Razor, Showdown, etc...

Personally, I loved encountering certain characters and getting to shoot them, as I was then able to send the videos to the actors that played them, for a laugh!!

I couldn't care less... which is the correct way to say it, unlike how most people spew it out and get it wrong...
I get your meaning... but in this instance he *could* have cared less, in that he could have cared so little as to not even bother contributing to the thread... ;)

Sorry to break it to you... but... < cringes > Goose Goslin (Basketball Hall of Famer) Patricia Razor (11 people with that name in the US) and there are sooo many people named Maverick!!!

I think you're missing the point.

Anway, I've long since conceded, so I won't be contributing to the thread anymore as it seems to have dissolved into semantics - as is people's want to argue about anything and everything.

Good luck & stay frosty out there commanders.

Seriously, something as innocuous as a name is all that it takes to break your 'immersion'?

<shakes head and walks away muttering>

Oh, and I have run into an NPC with my real name from the kick starter, he was a pirate and was quickly toast.

Funny you should say that. My first BH encounter was with an NPC named Breadicus!!!

When I'm repeatedly chasing down pop icons... yes, admittedly, more than a little. But I've given up on RP and Elite tbh. Not that they are mutually exclusive, but there's something about docking into George Lucas station having just had a scrap with Vladimir Putin and Isaac Netwon that doesn't quite scream "you're in a distant future". Just me, obviously.

It IS quite dystopian though, I've give you that.

You asked how I felt about it. I thought giving my feelings and the thinking behind them *was* the point...?

As far as immersion goes - We have roads and buildings here named after famous people (sometimes only fleetingly famous) and walking along the canal or through the harbour and looking at what some people name their boats, I can fully believe that some future governing entity would indeed just let people vote on what stations and things get named... resulting in the likes of Justin Bieber Platform, Lady Gaga Outpost, Han Solo HUb and so on.

So much of the game is already all serious and classic sci-fi with the system names and so on anyway, that adding in a bit of humour brings a Douglas Adams/Grant Naylor sort of flavour to it as well.

Also people are more likely to remember David Beckham station than Platform XP527-105-A-339...

Surnames I can understand... but Maverick as a *first* name?
What about the more obvious ones?
