Immersion breaking NPC names

NPC that borrow (not nod, let's face it) from popular culture. Immersion breaking or not?

  • No. I love running into all these characters and it doesn't impinge upon my roleplaying whatsoever (

  • Yes. How can I place myself in the future if I keep running into pre-millennial pop icons. Also, Bra

"Immersion" people screwed me up with crappy keyboard controls and stupid cuscenes I can't skip so I hate them. CMDR Spoongebob strikes back!

Just a quick poll, to see how people feel about running into Tyler Durden and Isaac Newton.

**Now with added poll**

On the contrary - I think it would be "immersion breaking" if you didn't have stupid names.

As people have pointed out - some people go out of their way IRL to give their kids "stupid" names - some even change their names by deed poll...

Obviously what qualifies as stupid is subjective..

I'd rather we saw ship names, rather than the name of the driver. Maybe show the CMDR/NPC on the contacts pane.

Maybe that'll come in time.

I ran into Boomshakalaka, Valdimir V. Putin, Al Bundy and Dr. House all within a week. I lmao so i guess i am not against immersion breaking names.

I rarely look at names unless it is a CMDR...

I don't like knowing my cannon fodder has a name...I need to sleep at night! LOL

If you bump into his noodly tentacle ... tell him I said hi :D

Saw Jerry Garcia the other day, and I was like "wow man, far out!"

Maybe it's the proportion that's immersion breaking. I swear I've seen umpteen Braben's' strewn across the galaxy. Worse than Williams' that bunch.

Maybe it's a fad in whatever era the game is set in....

I know a lot of people who are named after millennia old pop-icons.

Adam, for example, is an enormously popular name.

Thanks for this poll. Yes, for a game like ED that cares much for immersion, the often ridiculous NPC names are not helping. Endless references to pop culture from 1100 years ago is not helping either. I hope FD will go through the list of names at some point and remove at least the most crazy ones.

I had a short fight with the master of gravity Isaac Newton. I think the term immersion breaking is strained during the last weeks, just like griefing or nerfed.... :)

They are not gonna remove silly names from ks backers - I wouldn't bet a penny on it.

like many people here.. not only does it not bother me but I kind of enjoy it. I wouldn't want EVERY NPC to have names like these, but I got a chuckle the other day flying past Karl Marx... and no, it wasn't a communist system :D

It doesn't bother me at all. People get named after famous people all the time, not to mention fictional characters, and "alternative" names. Why in the world would future parents be any better at naming their children?
