Well Frontier already had advertising logos in startport docks (though of imaginary corps ofc) :p so i don't think that would be too bad

Curiously I actually had that idea already haha "hey, could do those ads from frontier but with real things"

Nothing more immersion breaking than real-life adverts being shoved in our faces. Just think, the whole point of adverts is that they stand out, to make you notice them. Not something I would want in my gametime.

...

And I don't know about you but I'm not itching to be hauling cans of coca cola about the place..

Why not?
Don´t you think that the miners of Ross 1015 do also deserve to live on the coke side of life during their scarce breaks? :D

As for general ads:
I wouldn´t be against them ... if they fit the setting ... after all we talk about a future in which it is mankind that has settled known space ... may vry well possible that some companies, like Coca Cola, have survived during all the time (and spread through the systems).

But to fit the setting IMHO it should be taken care to
1. carefully select the companies which are allowed to advertise
2. make commercial screens that really fit into the future environment (i.e. not just a company logo as it is now, but rather a company logo, altred to fit the futuristic setting of E: D )
3. don´t overdo it with the percentage of "real ads" vs. fantasy ads ... i.e. IMHO no more than 50% should be ads by real companies ... the rest should be ads by companies from the E: D universe

Pshh...pop-up ads on the dashboard, no way. Placing a few advertisements for real items and services throughout the advertisements for items and services created by Fronteir is okay. Specifically where there are already advertisements in front and inside space stations.

To tell the truth, I think Frontier went a little sneaky on us. They purposely put advertisements in game about made-up items and services. They also know that someone would eventually find the advertisement clause in their EULA and would probably start a discussion much like this. Apparently there was also another discussion just like this atleast several months ago. They knew this kind of discussion would come up eventually. How could they not? I'm not necessarily mad at them though. I just feel a little...used.

fictional adds are fine aslong as they relate to the company or game directly, imagine the city scape with the neon metropolis covered in bill boards...would look cool, blade runner-esq

There's another thread with exactly the same name as this. It would be good if they were merged.

If they do in game advertising I hope it's only for things like ship skins and expansion packs etc.

and for women with 3 boobies seeking 'friendly' acquaintances....

I would love in-game advertising along the lines of Blade Runner, and would welcome the likes of CocaCola's money to support the game. All of the advertising would have to be 100% non-immersion breaking for products that could still be possibly around in 3300 - A Mars a day helps you work, rest and trade?

This is what I would like seen done. I would like advertisers to actually put some work into the advertisements to make the ads fit the lore and have Frontier view the ad and say if it would fit the game or not. Don't just have them slap a current day subway ad onto the side of the station.

I think it works, if done right. It advertises for the sponsor, and it gives some sense of realness.

It can also go very wrong. This is why FD needs to have guidelines to fit things like this in, and be able to say no if it won't work.

In game advertising? Please no...

8. In-Game Advertising
The Game may incorporate technology (which may be provided by Frontier or third party service providers engaged by Frontier (each a “Dynamic Advertising Provider”)) which enables advertising to be uploaded into the Game on your PC, and changed while the Game is being played on-line. In order that the Dynamic Advertising Provider is able to direct advertising appropriate to your Game and geographic region, as well as to the correct location within the computer game, certain non-personally identifiable data and information may be retrieved and retained by the Dynamic Advertising Provider including your I.P. address, geographic location, in-game position, and information concerning the appearance of advertising visible during your gameplay (for example, the length of time an item of advertising was visible, the dimensions of the advertisements). In addition, the Dynamic Advertising Provider may assign a unique identification number which is stored on your PC and which is used to monitor and calculate the number of views of dynamic advertising during gameplay. None of the information collected for this purpose including the identification number can be used to identify you.

The technology employed by Dynamic Advertising Providers may be located outside your country of residence (including outside of the European Union).

Where a Game incorporates dynamic advertising technology, the technology which serves the provision of dynamic in-game advertising is integrated within the Game. This means that if you do not want to receive dynamic advertising, you should only play the game when you are not connected to the Internet.

I don't need to see tampon ads or new 2014 car ads or call of duty ads when the game takes place 1300 years in the future.

If this goes along... Frontier you're shooting yourself in the leg

don't have any problem with in game advertisement for games without monthly fee, they need to keep cash flowing in and that's one of the good ways to do ;)
