I'm not so sure IPv6 is fully functional on SKY. Their forum is up to date about not allowing access to change to the Open DNS Server. Do I need this or is this just for their FamilyShield Filter for all devices within your home?

Does SKY have it's own DNS Server?
I need to call them anyways to install updates pending since 2014.
Seems the only workaround (if I need to do this) would be to add another DSL (not ADSL) Router to the SKY HUB and disable its Wifi. I have no family so FamilyShield is not my needs. I'd simply like to access the instant speed of IPv6.

IPv6 here on Orange F (fiber/vdsl2) but no beta access :(

When playing World of Warcraft on IPv6, it was exactly like IPv4. Ping was a little better on IPv4.

I hope ED network will be better with IPv6, i have random disconnects on ED (PC and xbox). Multi crew really need an improvement on network i think.

As a software engineer who spent a non-trivial part of last year working to add support for IPv6 for a large cloud hosting provider, I'm very happy to see my work will not be in vain...

There are multiple ways to tunnel IPv6 over IPv4. Generally don't unless you need to.

IPv6 addresses are global (they should be anyway). Chances are your IPv4 address is being NATed at least once before it reaches the internet at large.

Rather then going completely static with IPv6 which can be a pain to configure right, keep SLAAC (aka autodiscovery), but disable privacy addresses.

People got concerned when IPv6 was introduced because the default mode was to embedded your computers MAC address in your SLAAC chosen address. They where worried that it would be possible to track you across the internet with it. So a solution was privacy addresses (and randomised addresses), most modern OS' will generate a new address every day, and keep them for seven days. New connections will use the one for today, existing connections will keep working.

It's the privacy addresses which cause problems with fairly dumb systems (come on now, my phone moves between Work WiFi, 4G, Home WiFi, so that's at least three IP changes a day, who does IP security on forum cookies.... sigh).

Disabling SLAAC can be problematic, router advertisements can include way more information then you'd think (DNS set up for example), not likely at home: multiple routers cooperating providing resilience, etc.

I'm no networking expert, but as I understand it, if my ISP is enabled for IPV6, I just have to switch it on in my router and reboot and the system should do the rest automatically?

Also, as regards all the devices in my house, they should still all be fine as they will fall back to IPv4 if they don't support IPv6?

I am on BT Infinity. I've seen contradictory comments - some people said they already have it, others said BT haven't rolled it out yet. I'm guessing this means it's being rolled out by region.

I am assuming all the FD servers are virtual and hosted by Amazon, it's Amazon who'll be taking the hit on being IPv6 ready with the hardware, software is irrelevant in this regard

This is actually not all that surprising. The same held true for my old ISP, which had native IPv6. IPv6 ping times to the DSLAM during peak hours were far lower than IPv4, due to the load on the IPv4 backplane. This will likely change as IPv6 adoption increases, but for the time being, IPv6 routing is faster(*).

(*) This does not hold true for tunneled connections, even 6rd. Unfortunately, there's a good 8-10ms lost in the process there. :( http://orthanc.localecho.net/s/2017-02/cmd_2017-02-23_12-09-21.png

This is *such* good news! Me being behind DS Lite, that is... I *once* (to my utter amazement) saw other players in game. Which is basically because I connected to the player who started the instance (IPv4 outgoing is not at all a problem with DS Lite... incoming is).

Wish I could test it, but I don't have beta access. :p

I am aware that BT are in the progress of implementing IPv6, my router is ready for it but the service has yet to hit my area.

No, it's a software solution, not related to what physical connection you have. But if you have very old equipment from your ISP, you probably want to check with them if they support it.

The actual media doesn't matter - IP is a layer above (or below, depending on your point of view) - and can be run on tin cans and gerbils.

How do you check this? I'm with BT as well and I tried enabling IPv6 on my router last night and rebooted but it's not picking up an address.
