Is anyone else finding themselves playing the game much less since Arx came in?

I have found myself playing much less in the last few weeks because my 9 year old PC has died. Twice. I find myself now in the most miserable situation of having to consider some latest generation components for my new PC. Very, very sad I tell you.
Sorry about that. So...my 6 year old PC has 3 years to go? :)

Being an ED nerd I save up a little every month just in case Frontier ever gets serious with ray tracing and 4k widescreen monitors in a few years. Then there will be a dedicated gaming computer costing $3000-5000 a lot better than the current ones if I'm silly enough to keep playing this game.

ARX has not changed the rate at which im playing Elite. (which right now is very little if at all and its been that way for months now (im very bored)). But i feel that Elite is a cheaper product for ARX, It feels less, Like a cheap mobile game or a once classy restaurant that suddenly started to sell kebabs.
I recal David Braben in a video once saying that when they do something in Elite it's got to be high quality, That quote alone always stuck with me. Gave me faith in the future of ED. Elite was Brabens Baby and his Flag ship product.

Now i just smell Kebab meat cooking.

Very much!
But now I do have a 'turbo' Trigger's Broom 🚀

😂😆🤣 i'm envisaging the turbo button on my first PC!!

even to this day i swear it did naff all!

I know I've been playing less.
But that might have something to do with my newborn, work or that funeral I went to on the other side of the world.

Perhaps FDev should just include cockpit mods that involve the colour layout of the cockpit.
Or god forbid, clothes for the pilot that aren't a recoloured copy/paste.
But that might be unrelated.
Happy weekend folks. Beer time in 3 1/2 hours!

I dont play less, but i certainly play differently
I find myself "saving" certain activities/actions for the next week, if i manage to reach the cap earlier in the week.

I might get out of the arx trap by treating me with an one-hundred-thousand arx package (as a gift for the first year in game) :)

ARX can either be embraced or ignored. For a laugh I had a look in the store and promptly exited when I saw my pitiful 650 whatever it is could buy beggar all.

I'm dipping into the game occasionally but the constant black screen crashes are killing it for me - especially as they now seem no longer recoverable. Not good news when it happens trying to find a VO asteroid in a particularly densely packed ring. Otherwise I'm quite happy driving my truck in ETS2 or ATS, Fallout 4 is quite entertaining and Red Dead 2 coming to PC in a few weeks time will probably sound the death knell for ED for the time being at least.

Just that really. For some reason I just have hardly run the game at all since these Arx things appeared. I don't really know why but I suspect it might be a reaction to the game sort of putting a value on what you have been doing. I am not interested in earning Arx (I can buy some if I want anything) so am not looking at maximising the awarding of them. However in over four-and-a-half years I have never gone more than a few days without playing and yet in the last two weeks I have hardly run the game at all.

Anyway, this isn't a complaint or a rant or a whine - just interested to know if anyone else has experienced this.
No, I am still playing ED far too much. Totally addicted!

The introduction of ARX has made no difference to my gameplay.
Probably because I was already doing things before ARX arrived and will continue to do stuff now ARX has been implemented.

Perhaps if the ARX value was shown somewhere in game it might make a difference to me because I would be able to see how my actions affect it but as it stands, I only see it after I have logged out or as I log in.
  • After I have logged out - Don't care as I am logging out
  • As I log in - Oh, that's interesting.... anyway, but to doing stuff.

ARX in my case is the reason I play, and I do only exploration now. I am sitting at New Growth and branch out from there. At this time I try to accumulate enough ARX to buy the 'right' to write the ships name on a ship. The price in real money just to write the fricking ships name on the ship is ludicrous. Never would have payed this, but with ARX it is possible now. Strange objectives for a strange game...

Without ARX I probably would not play anymore, and after buying the name plate I probably won't play much, maybe even leave the game. Everything I planned I gave up. I have around 1.5 billions in cash, planned to buy two ships (Python and Imp. Courier), and then wanted to go for more Engineers (have only 3 at this time). Planned to try trading (no missions, just trading). But looking at the things I need (materials mainly) and the annoyance of it all, I never brought myself to start doing it. At the moment the only thing I can abide in this game is exploration. Nothing much annoys me out in the black...

This game is strange in a way: FD decided to build a house. First they built a foundation and a basement. The foundation is very sound, the basement is luxurious and complete. One feels really well in the basement. But when the basement was ready, they just stopped. Either they run out of money or motivation, or both. So they decided to build a wooden shack on top, with cardboard walls and a straw roof. Many things in this shack just don't work or work not really well. And every time they try to add or change something the shack partially collapses and has to be fixed, which never is done fully. The shack becomes shabbier with every change. With Horizons they decided to make a new basement part, with is okay, but still they built only a measly shack on top of it. But nearby the shack they have a shop where they sell overpriced colors to paint the shack...

So I prefer to remain in the basement (flying, exploring, landing on moons), the rest of the game is rather annoying and makes me a bit angry when I think what they could do with the foundation and basement and have to see the measly shack...

A pity, really, I had high hopes for this game when I purchased it in February this year. But I fear even the planned (and highly secret) expansion DLC will just be a growing basement (hopefully in the same quality) but a shabby shack on top. As long as FD remains undecided how the house should look and which rooms it should have, we will have only a cardboard shack: No NPCs, no real game play, no real missions, only ghosts who appear for seconds to annoy you, flee if successfully attacked, come back fully repaired in seconds to annoy you further and force you to engineer your ship, which cost weeks of senseless play. No real background but a plethora of uninteresting and lifeless 'factions' and 'powers', about whose fate I could not care less.

Also - not meant as a rant, just a rather sad conclusion. The year comes to its end and I think my interest for this game comes to an end too. I have enough space on my SSD, so I will not delete it, and I will keep it up to date, but playing - I just don't know.

Honestly I like the concept of earning ARX by simply playing the game to get free cosmetics over time. It's a nice incentive in theory. In practice though so many playstyles make so little ARX that its not near as much an incentive as it should be.

For example, I've been in deep space since ARX were implemented and I've been exploring like a madman, yet I have only been earning like 50 ARX per week total. Turning in exploration data probably makes a lot more ARX, but the actual act of exploring itself seems to suck at it, and that is not a very good incentive to keep playing. In fact its very disheartening.

I have discovered that beachcombing also makes decent Arx, and after this last II (which is what killed my zeal for ED for the moment), exploring is the one thing I'm currently in the mood for in ED.

Question: what do you mean by "beachcombing"?

well, technically arx doesn't affect gameplay at all.

so if you think that in your case arx is the reason for this shift in motivation to play, you're suggesting that the arx 'intrusion' somehow changed your entire perception of the game. which is interesting because frontier's antics are really subtle and contained compared to industry standards in these types of cash grabs, and it hasn't really been a fundamental change in the business model from those 4 years. just a twist.

dunno, looks like you're particularly sensible to that (or had some very unrealistic expectations, happens to us all! :D). myself i detest ads and marketing but i've long trained myself at ignoring/avoiding it. by principle i don't ever buy anything that's shoved in front of me and i did not ask for (although it may prompt me to do other research elsewhere). other than that it's just noise, if it becomes too much or too annoying i just drop whatever it is: game, tool, service, media, whatever. but, again, frontier is far from that point, in that regard their behavior is exquisite compared to the normal.

the question is ... how have you enjoyed your last 2 weeks? ;)

I've been playing less but that's to do with the bug and not ARX per say. NPCs with magic weapons or resurrecting after I kill them makes me not want to bounty hunt as much. General stability/display issues when exploring/mining makes me not want to do that. The mission board being broken means I can't grind my fed rank.

These are the three things I do most and since the update they're less fun to do, due to the bugs. So I've stopped doing them as much if at all.

I'll probably come back after the December update, if it's fixed the bugs.

One thing that did surprise me regarding Arx is that I actually purchased two things from the store since their inception. I spent 1 Arx on the old Thargoid bobblehead - my first bobblehead and now I know why, did not like the distraction on the cockpit and removed it from all my ships. The second purchase was for a Graphite paint job for my Mamba, just wanted it a different colour from the rest of my fleet for some reason. Again, used the Arxs I earned in the game, (think it was 620 or something). In the end, FD hasn't made a cent out of me :D
I managed to get 4 freebies out of Arx so far:

1 Arx bobble head
Vibrant purple for the Viper Mk4
Vibrant red for the Phantom
Tactical Blue (before the white/graphite ones were back) for the ImpEagle

Next one will be tactical white, for which ship, I don't know yet.

So from this perspective, Arx has been a good thing - saves me buying stuff (with the inevitable buyers remorse) and instead getting free items (basic but to be fair I prefer solid paints over patterned ones anyways).

Expect the inevitable Arx earning nerf incoming though as the above isn't exactly pushing me to buy an Arx pack now - then again I already do have a lot of cosmetics for the ships I like so there's little room for squeezing more purchases out of this CMDR (cough chrome paints cough).
