In character i have not seen a living ship of thiers other than one or 2 browsing the remains of damaged ships. but i have seen the Inara logs and they didnt attack until i got close, and that seemed like self defence..... as for picking up escape pods, well, they would have died eventually as i wasnt here to pick them up, im out exploring, i see interesting non human signals, i occasionally drop into them... as for the occasional emp, stars do that sort of thing to thier planetary systems quite often, what if slowing down to normal space causes massive buildup of electromagnetic waste in thier systems that would be poisonous to them, our own equivalent would be the rearward expulsion of wind .....
Out of character i have seen the logs from the new guardian sites, and now know that they want us to think that there is no way for us to interract with them, as the guardians tried that, and failed ..... in this i see another line of story that would have made the universe livelier get slammed shut in our faces, if our choices are going to get railroaded like this then why dont we have fixed plot missions, for me to carry on exploring, i now need to start harming thargoids on purpose to get the exploration data i want for the records i cant at the moment keep.
Humans invade "their" space. Humans destroy "their" life forms (barnacles, we really don't know the relationship between barnacles and the thargoids), humans attack them at the first encounters, humans are developing weapons directed towards them by using their own technology (bio-tech, again what is the relationship between their bio-tech and them, we do not know. For all we know they see their bio-tech like we see out children)
Something that has been a truth throughout human history, "The humans kill what they do not understand!"
Yeah. Or they start testing until it's dead and then dissect it to be able to kill it more efficiently next time...
What I miss a bit is more information about the things we find. Since we can't have all the science ingame, I'd love to have information via Galnet or other ingame sources. All we got are a few vague articles and the logs from the INRA bases for example.
The barnacles, for example, are still just weird things with resources growing on spikes, while Thargoids fuel up on them or... do whatever. I am pretty sure lots of scientists already grabbed such a thing and completely disassempled it and know much more than we do. Of course they wouldn't give us all their information, but a bit more about supposed function, composition and so on, would we lovely, if only for fluff and making the narrative more interesting.
We don't know much about the Thargoids because they don't communicate. The only thing we get from AEGIS is how to destroy them best among a few other bits of information. I'd love to see some more analysis results. What are they made of and all this stuff.
I am most definitely not xeno friendly. One of the first 'goids I saw attacked me unprovoked. At some point I did find out that it was probably a bug that made it shoot first :| But at that point I had already attacked several and even downed a couple so it was a bit late. Not sure if there is a way to make friendly with em....at least until I can get that guardian tech unlocked and maybe learn to tell the different Thargoid factions apart.
I’ll admit, I was initially one of those commanders that really wanted to communicate with them. I was wrapped up in the idea that there is just some kind of misunderstanding and we were in the wrong somehow. After everything that has happened and is happening, I no longer believe that such a thing can happen. There can be no peace. They really are like insects. A wasp nest. I’m fascinated by bees, I LOVE THEM however, I will not allow myself to be stung everyday by a hive of growing wasps who feel like my house and yard is their domain. As much as I would love to just have them set up a hive in my tree so I can look at them and be in awe of their majestic nature, I need to get a ladder and smash the hive into a ball with my bare hands. So as the title explains, why are you still xeno-friendly?
they have never attacked me unless i get too close.
yes i have seen them around ruined ships but i have no idea who fired 1st (tho i do know Han Solo DID fire 1st)
they could be responding to years of humans shooting barnacles and stealing their probes... from their view we started this fight.
so for now, i am not friendly to them, but i am not unfriendly either, i am neutral.
in my game lore i made peace with the thargoids and they gave me a ship, however that is not canon... but in THIS game lore from their view CMDR Jameson tried to commit xenocide (is that the correct word for genocide of aliens?) against their entire race. i dont blame them for being a bit prickly against us
like i said my ending is no longer canon..... for good reason to be honest.... having the "other" ending canon makes for more interesting opportunities in ED i guess.
however if you visit CMDR jamesons crashed ship in ED and learn the story surrounding the crash, you will learn he is not quite the hero people think (not through any fault of his own, but the thargoids wont care about that).
Someone else put it better: "Xeno-NEUTRAL", rather than "Xeno-friendly", would be the position I hold.
Here are a list of GOOD REASONS:
-=(1)=- When Thargs FIRST appeared (in THIS iteration of the Universe, and in THIS time) those commanders who experienced them were NOT ATTACKED.
They were SCANNED, ONLY.
Their ship was _not_ "knocked" -- it was close, but not that close (ships shields were not triggered!) -- so POSSIBLY something like a "wake" effect from the PASSING Tharg, which "caused" the player ship to rotate.
(ALSO, think about it, "creative license" by FDev in order to allow a "disabled" player ship to see MORE of the (rear) of a Tharg, whilst still being disabled.)
This happened in a "particular region of space", which might rightly be called "their space" (vs "our space", which we would claim as The Bubble).
-=(2)=- At USS' with destroyed ship debris and Tharg presence (as others have rightly pointed out), they are similarly NOT AGGRESSIVE to player ships -- UNLESS
(a) you get too close
(b) you nick an escape pod they seem to be "rescuing" (ie rather than DESTROYING outright) ((tho it may be argued re potential(!!) "experiments"))
Seriously, if someone gets "into your personal space", you may well get annoyed, right? YOU might give someone a fair "verbal warning"...
AND, if given an AUDIBLE (and VISUAL - colour change!) WARNING, and you _don't_ back off, well, you were warned!
These Thargs are again similar to those FIRST encountered - peaceful in the first instance (ie on first sight). Surely they'd have Eyes and Sensors, and would "know" you were there, which implies they are ignoring you. We CAN rule out "short-/near-sighted", since they CAN and WILL continue to pursue a craft once designated as "enemy", even beyond the "threshold" distance of their initial patience / warning.
-=(3)=-(a) A SOLID CONNECTION has been established between "Thargoid attacks" and AEGIS presence.
This rather indicates a SELECTIVE strike action by PART of the Thargoids -- RECALL that the attacking craft were the bigger, SPINY ones, which overall have shown more aggression (more frequent, stronger, etc) in general.
-=(3)=-(b)
Keeping in mind that there MAY be (at least!) 2 DIFFERENT STRAINS / PARTIES of "Thargoid" (historically, Oresrians and Klax..ians? .. er whatevers), which ALLOWS for the concept of 2 "opposing factions" (much like Fed vs Imp, within Humanity) which MAY be at odds with each other, and poss. have different AGENDA too... WE should _not_ be "indiscriminately" attacking ("all") Thargoids, unless & until we "know" who we OUGHT to be fighting / defending against.
-=(4)=- Thargs have displayed aggression "most consistently" under the context of having been AGGRAVATED.
This COULD include being attacked "immediately when dropping from SuperCruise", because you'd have stuck your nose in their business, "uninvited", which would count as an "aggravating factor".
This "definitely" also includes EVERYONE who has taken the INITIATIVE to specifically HUNT DOWN & DESTROY Thargoids, (imho) BEFORE we have taken ENOUGH time to FULLY UNDERSTAND their motivations, at this time; whether or not the "known history" (mycoid virus, Alliance alliance , etc) are all continuing within the canon, is a contributing factor, as there previously existed a "peace" between (some) Humans and the Thargoids.
This happens quite simply because SOME people tend to be "trigger-happy", and want reasons for Pew-Pew. (Give them guns, and you get school shootings.)
I propose that, unless and until it is OVERWHELMINGLY shown that Thargoids are INDISCRIMINATELY AGGRESSIVE, we should HOLD FIRE, and fire ONLY DEFENSIVELY, rather than going "thargoid hunting"... :O
(But the trigger-happies & pew-pew-desperate will NOT listen to this, we all know.)
((AND, it is for THIS reason that ANY future potential "war with the Thargoids" will be the FAULT of these trigger-happy / pew-pew-desperate.))
There's a phrase in Legal situations: "beyond a reasonable doubt". As yet, I suggest we still have MUCH "reasonable doubt" that the Thargoids want to "kill all humans", as they have NOT ATTACKED "ALL" HUMANS -- just (so far) stations where AEGIS are known to exist. (HOW they know, is another matter entirely!)
Keep in mind, FDev will have used Z Hudson / the Fed (and the beautiful "we've got a field-neutraliser, let's go kick Tharg-butt" video) to SEED the IDEA of attacking Thargoids ___AS A TEST___ of simple Human Psychology -- "will they or won't they??" Will they wait for more info, or just go in gung-ho, guns blazing? Well, we've already had THAT answer...
-=(5)=- Guardians are ***supposedly*** / allegedly
no longer alive (re Ram Tah's interpretation/translation of data sent to him by players scanning the new ruins' obelisks)
Speculation on this aside, unlike the Thargoids, we humans have NOT encountered them specifically. (We may never, but don't _know_ yet.)
-=(6)=- Guardian "Sentinels" -- wrong term**; they are (Defensive) Autonomous Constructs, so "DAC"s, please! -- are "aggressive" when humans are "trespassing" on Guardian "protected" (maybe "sacred"?) territory / property... SPECIFICALLY where CLOSE to the DACs (ie near Tombs/Bunkers!)
** ((.. cuz man-made Sentinels are sentinels, & along with Goliaths and .. whatsits.. are collectively "drones"..))
IT HAS BEEN NOTED that their INITIAL "attack" is with (low-damage) "push-back" type attack... like saying "Oi, you! Push off, ya c*nt!"
It is ONLY AFTER "repeated warnings" (along the timeline similar to: pad blocking going from Fine to Kill You; Trespass going to Defense Systems) that they CHARGE UP and then launch twin (Electro-?)Rockets, "giving you time" to get gone, as they are NOT SEEKING YOU but are "targeted" on the LOCATION you occupy when they are fired ... and fired VERTICALLY, rather than DIRECTLY AT you... That's "aggressive defense" (of an area), not an "aggressive attack".
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE HERE:
The Guardian DACs ***SAY SOMETHING*** which you can hear when you are UP CLOSE. (Vid link below!)
We do not YET know if this might be an AUDIBLE "WARNING", or other message...
(.. which then would further support the notion that the DACs are _not_ programmed for "aggressive attack", but rather "aggressive defense"..)
I guesstimate the encoded signal would most likely be in HEX (base-6), mainly because the Guardians' pictograms use triangles (but base-3 would be "too small", I think, to use for communication signals), AND because Ram Tah said
.. something about the Guardian language appearing to use SYMBOL PAIRS.
The closest thing we have to that kind of construct in human terms is "byte pairs" in programming, where Hexadecimal byte pairs translate to (eg) ASCII characters. (That is, a single hexadecimal number aka a "byte" goes from 0-9,A-F (10+6=16=hexadecimal), and a "byte pair" means 16x16 = 256. If you've played with your HUD colour settings, or frankly most website colour settings, you've already seen these, eg 00=none, FF=255 or "full", per primary colour.)
A "hex pair" would be 6x6=36, which is conveniently JUST ENOUGH to give us humans a full 26-letter Alphabet + 10-digit number series.
If FDev needed one or two characters to represent other, more useful symbols, then "rare" letters (eg Z, Q) might be "dropped" from the translated alphabet ((assuming there IS one, encoded!!)) in favour of such extra characters... say, a coordinate separator, for example.
The Empire is so factional that they can never present a coherent objective. The Emperor seems to want to be cautious but Patreus seems to be all gung ho!
The Federation and from what I can see the Alliance are stoking the fires of war!
Currently, we have TWO (2) Fed "factions" = Zach Hudson + Felicia Winters
We have FOUR (4) Imp "factions" =
Emperor Arissa Lavigny-Duval ((since so many ppl have asked me, it's pronounced La-VEEN-yee Doo-VAHL))
Princess Aisling Duval ((... which is Irish and properly pronounced either "Ash-Lynn" or "Ash-Ling", but NOT Ayz-Ling))
Denton Patreus ((... pa-TRAY-us..))
and old Zemina Torval.
There is EVERY CHANCE that Patreus could turn out to be a "double-agent" for the Fed, helping to push the Fed Anti-Xeno agenda, under the auspices of the Empire, and could very likely "bring" all his followers over to the Fed side (along with his huge fleet) when he "reverts"...
That would bring the tally "back" to a more even 3 vs 3 (though the Feds might likely be far better armed, overall, in terms of fleet numbers)
From Princess Aisling's position on Slavery, you might infer that (despite the "dirty necessities" inherent in PowerPlay) she would be inclined to PEACEFUL motivations, which would line up nicely enough with Emperor Arissa's position; and Torval would be of an "old-school" mind (and may thus be discounted) LOL
