Is bounty hunting real players a thing?

Greetings Commanders,

I've always enjoyed doing RES bounty hunting vs. NPCs.. but was wondering if bounty hunting real players is common? I don't often see 'wanted' players.. which would make it quite difficult to find criminals to bring to judgement! If anyone else is familiar with this type of playstyle, where might be a good spot to look for these scoundrels? Feelin like doing some enforcing after finishing my latest build ;)

Wish me luck! o7

Well, it IS a thing but good luck, they're either not in open, no longer have a bounty because sidewinder suicide, uber engineered, or they Combat log

Nope! Not in the slightest. At best you might find some schmuck with a 6000 credit bounty, but that isn't worth the ammo costs, even with an all laser build. Anyone else either has a ship that is super engineered, uses a suicidewinder, or isn't in open mode. Even then, open mode is big. Oh, and they might be in gank wings too, hope you like 4 on 1 odds.

Word up, also their gaming night might be different to yours, let alone time zones! I am 12 hours out from the UK.
I feel it will be more "looking for" than actual "bounty hunting"
GOOD LUCK!

ps, what ship are you taking?

I wish Fdev had the foresight to take CMDR's who earn a Wanted status and not only lock them into Open but also make their markers visible to all players in that mode on their gal maps as a blinking red beacon.

I quite like this idea. I don't think it would be too hard to escape being killed by bounty hunters under these circumstances, but you'd have to keep moving and stay away from populated areas, which is exactly what a criminal would realistically have to do. And you only have to be killed once for the bounty to expire so it's only one rebuy anyone is facing in the worst case scenario. I reckon I'd incur a bounty on purpose in a fast ship and see how long I could survive. It would be a whole new type of gameplay for very little effort on the part of the devs.

As for the suicidewinder thing people are mentioning, that's being addressed in the upcoming update isn't it?

They did have the foresight to lock players with an active PvP murder bounty to open. It just never made it out of the design phase.

Something to put the "hunting" in bounty hunting would be welcome. Although I'd prefer something with a little more nuance, so that criminals could try to avoid being tracked and bounty hunters had to put some thought into it. Say, attach a timestamp to the the galmap markers and have them only update when the criminal is "seen" by an authority ship, station, or bounty hunter (player or NPC).

That is a terrible idea and totally can't be abused in any shape or form at all....

I like this version too. That way a wanted criminal could hide out in the black, which again would be a realistic option for a wanted man. Plus as you say, it would provide some fun gameplay for the bounty hunter who would have to use his tracking skills to hunt the target.

Are you really switching from serious to sarcastic in the space of one single-clause sentence?

Sorta? I mean think of it like this. You set that up. So now wanted players are stuck in Open and visible on the Galaxy Map, so now everyone flocks to them to kill them (unlike the myriad of wanted NPCs all over). So now you have all the players in a situation like a CG or Shinrata or something and have everyone trying to jump into a single instance. On top of the wanted player probably going to be harassed post being killed (if he doesn't just combat log to avoid that), you have instancing and server issues galore similar to the Salome' event all cause people wanna blast someone else who happens to be an annoying marker on their Galaxy Map.

It's not a great situation at all and has numerous potential for errors.

Only for commander killers. Apparently pve bounties get a free pass with FDev to cheat. Thank Sandro, it's his baby.

Have posted this before.

The "bad" guys have all the advantages, they strike unannounced, can get together anonymously, hit and run at will, consequences are minimal, what's not to like. The watering spots for their "prey" are well known and even staged by event planners, CG's anyone? Also as stated above, time zones and instances need to be considered.

For a single bounty hunter, you better be very good and have a max ship if you want to frequent the above spots or bring friends you have practiced with on a regular basis.

It's a romantic notion to be the "good" guy and right wrongs, however, in practice, it is extremely hard to catch the perps and cash in.

The bounties won't cover a rebuy if you get caught out.

Good luck.

On another note, this Sidewinder cheat, it is a CHEAT, needs to go away like yesterday, remedy is ridiculously overdue.
