Is Elite Dangerous a dead game? I compared it to some others ...

According to the MMO chart website which includes all sources, not just steam, its much much higher than that.
Yes, though unfortunately almost all of those sources are "things the owners of the site completely made up" (which, credit to them for a well-executed troll, they openly admit), so for Elite Dangerous it consistently claims several times as many players as Frontier's official figures do.

Personally I think that the game we have today is much better than the game we used to have 5 years ago. And yet it seems like OA was more positive about something that used to be worse.
Well, sure, that's understandable. There's a few games I played quite a lot about 5 years ago, enjoyed at the time, got bored of and haven't felt the need to go back to. If I look in on their websites or forums now, then it's clear that they've had some improvements made - big ones, in some cases ... but I still don't feel like I want to play them again even though I'd recommend most of them to others if it came up in conversation.

If my job was playing those specific games and coming up with something interesting to say about them week after week for the last five years, I'm pretty sure my attitude towards them would have gone from "yeah, I enjoyed that back then" to "I absolutely hate this game and everyone associated with it" by now.

Yes. I guess it's also understandable that people who are still fans of the game aren't fans of OA anymore who (apparently) isn't a fan of the game anymore.

If people enjoy something they don't necessarily want to hear why they shouldn't.

Maybe the people you speak of got so attached to the game they can’t stand a little criticism? In my case, I have never been a fan of OA, so didn’t have to transition into not fan, life has been easy. I regard him as a fine journalist who did quite a bit for popularisation of Elite. As a vet player, one of the oldest, uses his platform to voice his opinions & critique, news. You got me curious so I just went to watch his “content for 2023” vid from two weeks ago. OA sounded optimistic about the game and thargoid story unfolding. There are probably other videos, where he criticises current direction. All good, it’s how healthy journalism should work - reporting the good, the bad and the ugly.

As I said, I don't watch content creators so I don't want to say something about his content, neither positive nor negative.

I hate it when OA starts mouthing off about stars and planets when I am out exploring - his voice really grates for me and that is why I never bought the obsidian voicepack - still he sneaks in with that stars and planets guff.

bear in mind, we're now in the era of hype and hubris over analysis...

I pledged some time back.
The eternal alpha is loved by some, but, for me, serves to demonstrate how the price of a standard 'AAA' game can be considered wasted money.
i WAS a few(too many) thousand in on that game at one stage... so glad I spoke to one of their early stage devs way back when.

I came back to check it out again and they're at tech demo stage after a decade... a decade!

Not only that, I think I understand now why people call it a cult. The abuse for asking questions about the game(turns out there are sensitive topics) was intense. At least people are realistic here

Yes and I think you'd know that there's been threads suggesting the game is dying since before it was released.

The first one I saw was in July of 2014. 8 1/2 years ago and yet here were still are.

The only thing that hasn't changed is pointless threads being made on the forum.
FTW. :)

As long as there is a solo mode, then this game ain't dead for me. As an aside, I use the Frontier launcher. :)

As a relatively new player, I have my own perspective on this matter.

I only started playing late last year, around August-September. Plenty of the ever-necessary third-party tools and resources are still being maintained and updated, which I've used to help myself learn the ropes. Elite-related content is still being created by the players, there's a number of YouTube channels I've subscribed to and Discord servers I've gotten involved in over the past few months. The subreddit and these forums are active. Community goals are getting done, wasn't there one involving the delivery of wine for a charitable event that got smashed? Now I'm not massively experienced with MMO-type games, I think Elite might well be the first one I've ever played. But what I've just described certainly doesn't feel like a dead or a dying game to me.

I certainly wouldn't have invested as much time or effort into this game as I have if I had any strong suspicions about the long-term sustainability of the playerbase.

I wonder if the sheer size of the game world might make it a bit too easy to come away with the impression of deadness while playing, even if you never leave the bubble. Last I checked there were 19000 inhabited systems in the bubble, so if there are 4900 players at once that means 1 CMDR for every 3.8 systems. Which doesn't sound too bad a ratio until you take into account that a number of those 4900 will be outside the bubble in the first place, that they won't be distributed evenly, and further fractures like which game version is being played and whatever black magic ery is responsible for instancing.

I think that Elite Dangerous has a niche status that is both a blessing and a curse for it in terms of long-term player engagement. A blessing because I can't think of any other game which does the whole thing of allowing players to personally fly a highly customisable starship across a more or less 1:1 scale model of the Milky Way, which is the main draw of this game for me. No Man's Sky procedurally generates a wonderfully vast playground, but it's not in the galaxy I can look up and see in the real sky. Other games may be similarly impressive while still falling short of exactly what Elite provides. But this niche status is also a curse, in the sense that it means Elite Dangerous most likely won't achieve a massive boost in popularity that would provide an unquestionable financial case for FDev allocating significantly more resources towards its development. Not saying that Elite won't ever become more popular than it is now, but if it does then it will be more of an upward trend instead of a miraculous explosion.
