Is Elite Dangerous a reboot of EVE Online?

Eve is a very niche game. It's completely designed around groups working together in a full PVP environment.

That's not to say you can't play as a solo player, but as soon as you step out of the safer areas you are at a massive disadvantage becuase groups of players will attack you.

Will Dangerous be designed like this? Probably not.

I remember reading something about GoonSwarm (a famous EVE ganking corporation that caused no end of problems) migrating over to SC and causing the same type of problems. It ended up in this big flame war between the 'spreadsheet warriors' (hardcore EVE players) and the SC pilot elite, all sorts of reference about how the pilots were gonna own the spreadsheet jockeys because theres no Point and Click piloting.

Anyone think were going to have the same problems with EVE players trying their hands at real space combat?

Its Elite....You get a IV on the box...and a Cobra MKIII ;)

I can only guess take eve and make it better....It does raise the question as this game is being created via the kickstarter will we get free online gameplay or will there be a signup fee ?

Almost certain that when the game is released that there will be no IV on the box :D Its only really us fans, especially the ones old enough to have played the original, that refer to the new game as Elite IV. The developers themselves don't even use that expression although they did initially according to Michael.

I'm also sure that David himself, or possibly Michael, has confirmed that there will be no fees for playing online. The only costs involved that I can see is if you haven't pledged at a sufficient level to have all expansion packs included.

Not really, ED doesn't have formal group/clan/guild structures, the entire player-base isn't shovelled into the same sandbox, you can't Cartel the economy and so on.

I think the following video pretty much sums up EVE, and having messed about with alpha a little, I can happily confirm Elite is a completely different game:

NOT SAFE FOR WORK

LOL, this video is just so accurate! I've repped you for this!

I've played EVE for 2 years (pretty much constantly, a lot of hours per week) but I've let my account go dormant now - I can't pay the £17.99 per month to keep the account active, and making the ridiculous amount of ingame money (isk) to buy a 30day license is exhorbiant - its a full time job to make that money every month, and then the grind continues.

EVE is a good game with a horrible point and click interface. How CCP can even compare it to Elite is beyond me.

I'm hoping that a few EVE exclusive players (those who have never played a real space sim) migrate over learn life isn't about spreadsheets and financial manipulation.

Advice. Get some practice in though...;)

Well, I think they are a bit scared of Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen - EVE Valkyrie is a first person shooter designed in the EVE universe exclusively for the Oculus Rift. It was originally a test thing they brought to one of their conventions, but was rapidly accepted. If they could bring this to the massively multiplayer environment, it would be amazing. However, you then see they are pretty much copying Elite :p

I think it's pretty save to say that the space sim genre is making a huge comeback which suits me fine. ED, and SC will ne the front runners of course. EVE Valkyrie looks good but I think its a generic space combat sim with no trading or open world. It looks pretty awesome as did Wing Commander did back in the 90s.
I only hope that Disney decide to remake the XvT series.

You are yet to experience the small groups pilots here, voice linked to friends whilst ganking solo pilots they come across for the whole day. Once noticed by the masses, they just move on to the next system, rinse and repeat. You think, it won't be happening here? Think again, tis only a matter of time. heheh :D

Those that throw the "repercussions" angle out there, well ... you'll find that the tag and bounty of being a "bad boy/girl" is a badge in itself, groups of ADHD SA types will flock to it (why? because its all been done before in EVE and will be repeated here at any cost). If you think bounty hunters with fill in the gaps, BH's and the like will always be in the minority ... and nearly always outgunned! :)

Would anyone even play EvE if Elite was essentially EvE except with hands-on control?

Umm no.

For sure EVE is not the same as ED. I CAN FLY MY SHIP IN ED!

That was always my main gripe with eve. I always wanted to FLY my ship instead of the point and click nonsence.

Cheers,

Bully

Safety in numbers then :)
You will have to make friends or have a very fast ship to get away.

Also it could mean bounty hunters need to group up, which means extra fun can be had :)

As one of those ADHD SA types, I take great exception to your post, Sir!

To be fair, SC is the game that all the goons are flocking to. ED has a thread up in the forums but it's very quiet and civilized, much like these forums. I think the lack of corporations/guilds is what's caused that. Goons love to zerg and grief and break things and it doesn't look like that's going to be possible in ED. It's a good thing; we already have EVE and SC for that, we need something different from ED, a unique experience.

I will say this about that kind of behaviour, however - in the case of EVE it often highlights to CCP just how broken their game is in parts, and the furore it causes on the forums forces the devs to quickly address the issue. Though it griefs players in the short term and adds to the Goon rep for evil, in the long run the game is better for it because the developers are forced to divert attention and resources there to fix it.

I seem to remember watching an interview with some head honcho in CCP talking about Eve Valkyrie (around the time when the demo came out last year) and he was asked by the interviewer if they had any plans to make it a stand alone space sim game. In fairness he didnt commit to anything, but he hinted that they thought that they would intigrate it into the Overall Eve game, much like they are doing with their very brave FPS module Dust that's either come out or on its way. So in effect what he meant was that with the current point and click Eve game, Eve Valkyrie would be the module played in orbit around a planet, while the Dust would be planetside, all in a shared Universe.
Ambitious!

I'll see can I find that interview....

Ok I cant find the video, but I think this is the transcript of it. From Oct 2013

I think the biggest anti-griefer aspect of ED will be the player's ignore button. OK, the griefers will be able to hit people at least once but depending on the circumstances of the hits they'll soon find themselves on more and more ignore lists and with progressively less player targets to have a go at. And griefer commander names will soon get passed around.
