It's the time taken to verify such things would be one of the problems.
And, once money is involved, then players will demand their candy which would force Dev time to deal with any and all issues which will ultimately detract from further planned progress for the game.
It's just a recipe for disaster and not needed unless it can be done in such a way where it doesn't cause drama.
That's kinda my point - they can price it honestly at what it costs to have a person to deal with that, or enough people to deal with it to get them done at a suitable rate. Take it entirely out of dev hands other than allowing such images to be shared within an instance so it doesn't interfere with development

Forums happily dictate size and content of avatars..... this is just more formal and they can make it cost-neutral for them at worst

I'd rather have more GTA style in-game money customization than the current system. This isn't a freeware game after all.

There are simple ways for FD to shield themselves from such lawsuits. Clauses in the terms you agree to when uploading the texture. Provided FD respond to stuff that is offensive and reported as such, and to reports of IP violation by the holder of those IP rights by promptly removing that content from the game (from the server that hosts it so no clients render it any more and it no longer appears in the livery tab of any player) there's nothing to sue them over. Other folks have done this and similarly insulated themselves from this risk. FD could do the same. They just need to have the right policies in place and the right lawyer writing the ToS for it.
That's why every game has this clause in the EULA.
Or some manner thereof. Which makes the idea of a lawsuit regarding this topic laughable.

Now I don't know about how it works in the U.K. but in the U.S. if you file a civil lawsuit against someone and lose because you had no basis for a case, you pay the defendant's legal fees. Prevents most frivolous lawsuits, especially from individuals directed at companies since the company typically has a legal team that costs several multiples of what the individual's costs.
Oh I agree, it should be enough to shield, but it only requires one case where it is twisted as it has been before, but as said I still think it can be done through some means, but that might be one of the reasons it isn't, my suggestion earlier with community approval I think could work fine.

They didn't have custom emblems in the 80's so I don't think they should have them now. I didn't pay half a billion yen and become a master chef in kickstarter so kids like you can have custom emblems in MY looking at planets screenshot simulator! Frontier could be spending their time on better things than custom emblems like a new roller coaster theme park game IN SPACE! How crazy would that be?! If you want custom emblems on your space ship than you should go play Call of Dirty with the rest of the Steam kids you filthy millennial hipsters!

But seriously, I'm all for it. :D

Actually I think if you go and look you'll find that it hasn't been twisted. There isn't a single case of a company losing a lawsuit regarding online interactions that I know of, and indeed I can't even find any cases of a suit making it to court at all.

There's just literally no reason to suspect that this would be of any concern to FD. If a case like this were possible CCP would've been sued out of existence for all of the ASCII      and adult novellas people put in their player profiles eons ago. :p

It takes them months to add new groups to the game (as far as I know my mate is till waiting) so I have my doubts that we'd see a custom emblem added to the game before the next ice age.

I haven't actually checked in a while. It's a bit ridiculous that something with this much demand is still relying on manual entries. Anyway been taking a break before 2.1 release like yourself. Will check again when I come back.

HA! And I thought I was bitter.

Yes because if they do it right it'll be a huge influx of new money, which can be funneled back into game development.

Seriously, they could justify hiring an entire new branch of staff just to handle this part of the game exclusively and it would pay for itself many times over every quarter.

....or perhaps to Panama or the Bahamas.;)
