Is the Stellar Forge and ED becoming Outdated?

I thought from the title that it was suggesting Stellar Forge wasn't keeping up with current astrophyisical theories - such as the one that the solar system is atypical in having the gas giants further from the star than the rocky bodies. Unfortunately, I don't think much can be done about that - we're probably stuck with the ED galaxy the way it is.

What have Fleet Carriers got to do with graphics updates or atmospherics?
Nothing, of course!
I guess the desire is for astonishing stuff like below :)

It’s not always graphics that make a good game however.

I’ve been playing the poorly reviewed Terminator Resistance and as a huge T1 & T2 fan it’s nailed the atmosphere and given me exactly what I’ve always wanted to experience.

ELITE doesn’t have to have the greatest graphics if the gameplay is up to scratch. I think, as there are gameplay issues in ELITE it makes the outdated graphics ‘feel’ worse than they actually are.

That IS indeed a pretty minecraft game ;)
If you look to the horizon, it is pretty reasonable - the remainder is just 'enjoying' the 'wonders' of PG everything

ETA: That was from pre-update, where OpenGL was used to render graphics. The Vulkan update that prepared for the new version with VR was almost as good.

More than 5 years have passed since ED was released. ED looked cutting-edge in 2015. Now, it has inferior level of detail (less polygons for ships, objects, lower resolution textures, no ray-tracing or volumetric clouds). Old games like Minecraft and World of Warcraft support RTX ray-tracing, unfortunately not ED. Competitors such as the Unreal Engine add planet generation with wildlife and transition from the surface to space. It's not as ambitious as simulating the whole galaxy. However, the surface level of detail and life is far ahead of ED's lifeless worlds. The Stellar Forge simulates the galaxy via the Background Simulation, but it's barely visible for players in star systems.

A last-gen looking game won't attract a lot of new players. Next-gen games on the PlayStation 5 etc will graphically blow ED out of the water. So Frontier should keep on upgrading ED like CCP does with Eve Online. Is it too late for the Stellar Forge (Cobra Engine) or can Frontier improve it sufficiently?

People have high hopes for the Next Era expansion. Frontier could make many people happy with a free graphics update. Based on the underwhelming Fleet Carriers, I don't have much faith anymore.

I'd rather believe that in the next future there will be more space quality games.

Ugh, what is that abomination? No thanks. ED graphics are perfect for me and run beautifully on my three
old Core2Quad 8gb PC's. Can't see how raytracing or fancypants graphics engines could add anything to it.
X.
Ignore the PG flora/fauna... The landscape generation was very good, lost since Vulkan and other updates happened.

Don't know about that, but featuring multiple light sources would be a good start for improvement.
It's actually a shame that a space game that simulates star systems with multiple stars was not designed from start to be capable of generating multiple light sources (2 stars at least).

But Stellar Forge got another very big weak point:

The light source comes only from the star that is considered as such in the system map:
for example "Collection of Wonders" (Skaude AA-A h294) got a lot of stars, but these are defined as planets in the system map.
The only two stars considered as such are the 2 black holes. The result is that the complete system is dark, even the rings around the red dwarf are pitch dark. This is a huge "bug" and it clearly shows the limitation of the graphical engine.

From a technical standpoint ED's visuals weren't particularly jaw dropping back in 2015, that has never stopped it from being succesful and I don't feel it's that big of a problem now either.
Most of the games I play are either 10+ years old, or weren't all that impressive graphically at launch anyway, so I have little interest in more eye candy.

IMO even though ED's graphics may no longer be top notch, they're still very good, occasionaly even absolutely gorgeous. Overall visuals are certainly not an issue with the game, aside from stuff like the single light source. Together with the very enjoyable flight model, they're the 2 main (and probably only) strengths of the game.

ED was astounding when released, with its graphics doing a good job of imparting the depth, variety and scale of systems generated from Steller Forge.

Move on a year, and Horizons built on this with the impressing bar raising development of planetary landings with the new and improves graphics that brought to the game.

But FIVE YEARS LATER... I struggle to think of much that compares to that first year of technically impressive bar raising content...

New Era, is I suspect for me at least, a last hope for the game to finally move on again...

Yes, I use windows too for playing - multi-boot has its uses :)
Apple have (historically) had an odd approach to computing, in 'the old days' when Mac desktops ruled the DTP / Design camp their vanilla coloured boxes were threatened by PC Compatible vanilla coloured boxes, Apple adapted by utilising PC GPU components and busses to stay in the race. Then the Students were targeted with the first iMac's (awful internals but very pretty) and that set their trend, very pretty hardware but not particularly noticing how 'leisure computing' (gaming to you & me!) might be a good section to address.

So, no gripe actually about Mac hardware, it is very powerful now that CPU/GPU issues have been addressed, it is just that Apple really doesn't appear to want to get their hands dirty with gamers in particular, odd really :)

Yeah. Well they currently have an overriding priority of form over function and keeping performance parts cool and powered doesn't fit into their design philosophy. Given that the pc enthusiast scene is so full of bling these days (makes sense since the spec race doesnt matter) if they were brave enough im sure they could do alright. Bootcamp is a very natural part of it if that's what you want from the hardware.

I'm still running my 8 yr old 2500k and while my storage subsystem is a generation behind it plays everything i want. Its become more of a thing to use it until it fails. And i have macs for the modern stuff :p And long ago switched to macos for productivity..

Anyway as far as elite goes, as the years tick by the older ship interiors and gas giants are really starting to look dated. To the point they are noticeable and detract from the experience. I have a mobile app with animated gas giants (solar walk 2) so if some indie mobile developers can do it... it looks amazing too.

Really frontier you cant do this?
