Is there a reason not to buy an Anaconda?

It's a mustard ship. Some people love it, others hate the thing.

But to answer the op, yeah there's plenty of reasons not to buy it.

It has huge damage potential but half its damage is on the top and the other half is on the bottom which can lead to a rather mixed combat experience. It has the best jump range, but its handling in (and out of) supercruise can begin to grate on you after 100 jumps. It's expensive...

There's just a kind of unavoidable boringness to the ship... It's just not that nice to look at, I've bought paints and ship kits for it and it just doesn't leave me feeling inspired the way even an Eagle can. I did find a shot of one recently that I really liked...

...credit goes to whoever took that. Looks awesome...

However, I've had some good times in an Anaconda, and I doubt anything that anyone says here will be enough to put OP off buying one at some point. You only have to fight one as a new player to start dreaming of getting in the pilots seat.

My Anaconda has done 260klys,. He is lovely to fly, handles well, and jumps far. And has plenty of module space. Perfect for deep space exploration

It used to be a must have, but since Corvette and Cutter have been introduced and now that there are other good exploration ships - the must have thing isn't what it used to be unless you absolutely must have the best long jumping ship available.

Other than the long jump event, there are better ships available for Trading, Combat, Mining and most anything else you can think of.

Ooops - almost forgot bulk Passenger runs - 54 First Class cabin capacity. Also good for long range Sightseeing, but I usually use an Orca for sightseeing and an Anaconda for Bulk Transport.

Nothing better for bulk Transport

Those asking why people say the Corvette does better damage than the Anaconda are not considering ToT, which the Corvette will get more of in competent hands. DPS is not all about DPS on paper, in practice is a different matter.
Already addressed that.

Unless your building them both light they don't handle that much differently.

We are arguing over less than a second of rotation at most here

One, it is a large size ship. Like all large ships (I'm referring to the Big 3 as well as Type 9 and 10), its handling is not good. And because you cannot land on outposts, you are missing out on a lot of cargo delivery missions. Python is so much more versatile in this.

Also among the Big 3 because you sit furthest back on the ship, I find it the hardest to manoeuvre the Conda through the mail slot on a star port, most likely to hit the grills. Cutter is the easier because you are sitting way up front.

Anaconda flight characteristics are just slow and not enjoyable. The rest of its qualities don't make up for that. It does have the ability for long jumps because it has been manipulated.

The Cutter also has slow handling but can carry big tonnage and hauls the mail in a straight line. Speed/capacity can make up for its deficiencies.

The Corvette is an agile and stable gun platform, can turn and carry a decent amount of cargo. Its lack of speed lets it down.

Owned all three, the Anaconda didn't make the last cut.

I think the Conda is the multiclass king of large ships, but once you get access to the Cutter and Corvette it gets put on the back burner.

It can still excel at exploration but I like my Phantom for that.

I ended up turning my Conda into a long distance mining ship that has everything it needs to do both deep core and laser mining, so it still has a place in my fleet. It just isn't as good at what the Cutter and Corvette specialize in.

+1 for the "it flies like absolute crap" vote. If you enjoy actually flying your ship, avoid it.

Just looks too good to be true, jump conda, battle conda, trader conda.

If it’s in budget is there a reason to look else where!

thanks in advance

No.

It's as good at everything as it first appears to be.

Personally, I feel like DeLacy have cornered the market in multirole ships, with the Cobra and the Python, so I think of the Annie the same way and built mine into a large multirole ship.

Also, could the Conda be about to be dethroned??

Any CMDR with a DBX that gets the current CG reward might be able to out jump a Conda with that 15% range boost.

If you get your anaconda after you've already tried the cutter and corvette, then there's no possible way for being precious to get in the way of raw ship.

That's what I did :)

I had one for a while but got rid of it because I have other ships that do the jobs good enough and aren't as ugly.

I use a krait 2 for exploration. Nope, doesn't have the range you can get with an anaconda, but I don't need that.

I use my cutter or chieftain for fighting. No one basks for an anaconda.

I use a T10 for mega bulk goods transfer to my carrier. Oh wait, that's 500 ly range so again no need for an anaconda.

Mining, when I do that, I have another Krait 2.

I bought one because at the time it seemed like the expected thing to do. I didn't really want it, but what else are you supposed to do when you're sitting on a couple billion credits and already have a Corvette and Cutter?

It wasn't bad, but to me it was the least interesting and exciting of the "Big 3".

Then circumstances were such that I ended up taking it on Distant Worlds 2. It wasn't my first choice, or even second, or maybe even third - but considering the time and materials constraints I had to work with, it was what I ended up with.

Somehow, somewhere along the line I ended up getting comfortable with the ship, and then discovered I'd fallen in love with it. Now I wouldn't trade it for anything.

That's not to say I fly it all the time - it spends most of its time parked when I'm in the bubble and just running around doing random things. Medium ships are my go-to choice there, and lately, that's often something in the Krait family. But if I'm going out into the black more than say, 7 or 8 thousand lightyears, I'm almost certainly taking the Anaconda. It just feels like home.

It's my current engineering project, and after roughly two years I think I've finally settled on a solid blueprint of what it's going to look like when it is done. At least as done as any project like this ever is.

In short, I may not spend most or even the plurality of my non-deep exploration time in the Anaconda, but it's comfortable. And reliable. And if need be, with a quick refit at a remote station on the edges of civilization, it can - and has - made a respectable showing as a miner, or in combat. When I'm flying it I fear nothing, because I know it'll handle anything that gets thrown at it while I'm out there.

Of all the other ships and stations and places in Elite, my Anaconda most feels like "home". Anywhere else is just where I store my stuff.

Whether or not that's worth a few hundred million credits to you is only something you can decide, but the answer for me is a resounding "yes."
