Is there any actual public roadmap or major content coming to Elite or just updates and fixes?

Update 16 confirmed :D

Might already have been somewhere else, this is the first confirmation I've seen.

I think that there is going to be an update 17 was also ‘confirmed’ if being stated in a stream counts as confirmation.

The excitement is …. low level.

Any early guesses as to what U16 will bring us? I have hopes buy my guesses will be nothing like them :D

Given that livestreams are confirmed as only monthly until the end of the year, I'm guessing nothing out of the ordinary. It'll be ways to gradually get inside the Titans with a set of bits and pieces (probably via a list of CGs) until the final confrontation with either:
  1. Chris Roberts
  2. Derek Smart
Not sure which yet :)

Saying "Oh, well, Update 16 is coming, and then it'll be Update 17" is like saying "Winter is coming and then it'll be spring". That to me, is not a roadmap.
And as for livestreams now only being monthly, I don't want to sound negative, but if you can only be bothered to do livestreams monthly, then what's the point? All you're doing is prolonging the inevitable.

So how would I like to see Frontier fix this? Either fully commit to the future of Elite Dangerous, get all the devs on new content, make what the community wants (coughShipInteriorscoughVRinOdysseycough) happen or don't, and if not then say so. Do you have an Elite V in the works and are just kicking the can down the road until either a) Elite Dangerous is no longer profitable or b) Elite V is ready or c) both? If so, then do the community a favour and say so. Honesty is always the best policy ... in my opinion. This continued game of tactical silence is hurting the game and the community ... in my opinion.

i once read on this forum that playing elite you get used to workarounds. and if it isnt true...
lets just make our own wish boards roadmaps and then get disappointed either way :p

You realize if you evoke DS's name he will show up!

I think U16 was first confirmed about when U14 released.

I think that there is going to be an update 17 was also ‘confirmed’ if being stated in a stream counts as confirmation.
At this point I don't think we're going to be massively surprised if there's also an update 18 in the first half of 2024, either.
Maybe they should skip it and go straight to 19, liven things up a bit?

I think it's all been fairly clearly set out, even if it's not been put in those specific terms or all in one place.
- it's not practical to deliver all the features "the community" wants in the timescale the community wants at the quality level the community wants for any per-unit price the community (and more importantly the much larger number of players not in the community) would be willing to pay (see Odyssey).
- equally, if they were planning to kill off the game after the Odyssey release disaster, the time to do that was at least 18 months ago. It's still profitable and can still fund some development, so they will continue to do that, and there's been no hint at all given that they intend to stop doing so (and plenty of hints like "bothering to split Legacy/Live at all" that they're not) ...
- there's absolutely no reason to expect that Elite V would take less time to develop than Elite IV has to date, which has been over a decade ... unless it was so heavily based on the Elite IV code that it was basically just Odyssey Update 18 anyway (plus compulsory progress reset and repurchase to reduce the popularity further). Not happening, not even slightly hinted at, but there's "honesty" and there's "actively seeking out and stomping on whatever dreams and wishful thinking they can find".
- every previous non-short-term commitment by Frontier to either features or timescale has ended up being wrong in key aspects and attracting more criticism than not mentioning it at all would have (e.g. see all the heat about the "key feature overhaul"); genuine mistakes and deliberate lies get scored the same by "the community", so the only way to be perceived as honest is to stay silent until absolutely certain. Does that mean no "roadmap"? Yes.

The story of businesses everywhere, if only we could do without the customers.
Lots of my favourite games would have been destroyed by some sort of democratic, customer-first design process. Why does he have to be an Italian plumber? The very best creative things are giving people what they don't yet know they want.

Although I admit that really original brilliant things are very rare. Which is why I'm not running a business that does it!

While I agree with much of what you write, given that so many other companies seem able to create a roadmap and deliver on it, I have to disagree on this.
Yes, but those other companies are, crucially, able to deliver on it: they also probably largely stay silent until reasonably certain, but in their case that means "a year" or "two years" or some sort of timeframe where the term "roadmap" is meaningful, rather than "three months". My thoughts are specifically about Frontier, not about those other companies.

(Should Frontier also be able to do that? Sure, in an abstract sense, yes. But if whatever it was that causes their developments to over-run or need spec cutbacks or both over and over again was practically fixable I assume they would have done sometime in the last decade...)

To be honest I'm not sure what conclusions Frontier should draw from reading the forum, reddit, twitter, etc. There are basically a few dozen doomsters, trolls, and white knights duking it out. Then there are probably a few hundred or maybe even thousands reading said musings looking for information or even occasionally posting. It seems quite logical that Frontier keeps working on the game according to their own plan and at a pace afforded by the actual revenues generated.

Open your eyes.
The roadmap is hidden on Raxxla.
Explore, search, enjoy, dream, play Elite the way you want. Find Raxxla.
And you'll find the roadmap.

There are even more people out there who can't be bothered reading all this stuff, because they just want to play the game. They don't even know that this forum or all the ED subreddits exist.

I remeber years ago we had a roadmap showing all the major content planned but since Odyssey I've never seen another like that. I really don't now what is coming (apart of Thargoids updates) and if there is something to bring hope for the players in this game. Don't get me wrong, the game is good, but still has so much potential and I can't see any great expectations on it for the next years. Is Elite still worthy for the dev team? Can we still wait for new exciting content coming? or just lore and regular updates?
I assume that most of you had already seen the Starfield new extended gameplay and there is so much from that gameplay that could be implemented in Elite Dangerous (ship interiors, docking with other ships, interesting planets (not only big dead land masses with settlements), npc crew, small cities, etc...
just cosmetics and few little things.. I assume the game is finished by FDEV
