Is this all we can discover?

My question is simple: are all the geological and organic structures, anomalies, etc. discovered? obviously i'm not talking about finds, like "hey, i first discovered a planet and it has bark mounds", i'm talking about brand new stuff that is not in the CODEX, because nobody found them yet. are there any? or is this all?

I feel like there should be WAY more kind of geological/biological structures, lifeforms out there, explorers should have more things to discover for the first time, not just 4-5 color variants of the existing 20-25 structures.

I'm not a hardcore explorer, i first discovered around 1760 systems, only about 19 Earth Like Worlds. I know people who are way more dedicated and still they never found anything that has not been discovered yet. I think we need more stuff we can find. I went on a 50.000 Ly trip and have found absolutely nothing apart from planets (Water Worlds, Ammonia Worlds, Earth Like Worlds and other terraformable bodies) that have no content. Just a ball in space with my name on them. An Earth Like World alone supposed to have millions of lifeforms on them. We have like 20-25 in the codex?

It's a game, people play to have fun or have some sense of achievement. Just be creative and add more content, Frontier! :D

Before the 3.3 update it was hard to find this stuff, too hard. I would spend days looking, flying or driving across some tiny moon or another looking for some unusual signal. I spent most of the first three months of 2016 looking for barnacles, eventually finding one only to discover that not only was it not a new discovery but it had been farmed out, presumably because it was one that was particularly easy to find.

Later I looked in untagged systems, working my way around the galaxy in a ship equipped to survive any encounter and found a few (about a dozen) geological sites, never more than one per small moon. There was always more to find, I never found any biological sites, I found a Guardian site near the core but again it was well known presumably because it was easy to find, and later still, just before the 3.3 update I went specifically looking for Guardian sites (the ones with the hostile skimmer-things) using the civilisation filter on the galaxy map and found a few (they were signposted in the system so once in the system it was pretty easy. I never used external help other than knowing that a particular thing (eg barnacles) existed in the game.

During the 3.3 beta I used the new mapping functionality on a moon in my home system I regularly visited for mats & missions, and identified fourty-odd geological POIs (I had never found a single one there before). I took a screengrab of the co-ordinates and visited one of the sites in the live game, sure enough it was there too, it had always been there.

The 3.3 update has made it much, much easier to find what is there, arguably too easy. By the end of December I had seen more persistent surface POIs than I imagined possible without the probes telling me where they were, what was once a rare treasure became mundane, good only for farming mats. I found far more in space that was new and (I presume) added in 3.3, ticking a few more codex boxes, and visiting different regions kept me going 'till around the end of January and by then I felt I'd consumed enough of the new content.

In one update to the game the enormity of the galaxy was reduced to ticking boxes in one region, then moving on to another region. I visited 5-6 regions & feel no great urge to repeat the same simple search in the others so I returned to the bubble.

But I play most days, for several hours at a time. For most players it is more than enough, but for me the scope now just feels so small. Not because of how much there is to find or the variety, but because what there is is now so easy to find.

I think it is very likely that some phenomena are still not discovered yet, at least if they are put into the game manually, or the distribution algorithm chooses unpopular or remote patterns. The "issue" with the codex is, that it highlights the global state of discoveries, even categorised for our convenience. This makes sense, because special discoveries were shared almost immediately anyway, but each player had to look out for those announcements on their own. Now it is highlighted in the game itself. Codex rumors as a concept do not help in that regard either. It seems that the developers want (certain) new assets appreciated as soon as they are added to the game, perhaps to provide evidence that there are regular additions to the game.

About the millions of life forms on earth like planets:
Keep in mind that there are certain constraints of the game engine in regards to detail and number of entities you can encounter in an instance, without creating issues like significant FPS drops or lag.

yeah i don't get it, why do we need 48 geological sites on a planet? is there anyone really who visits them all to make sure they are not all just bark mounds? if i see a body like that i just skip it to be honest. it's such a pain to land at one, then go back near orbit so you can go to the next one...
maybe if the ship launched fighters would have nav panel and you could cruise faster near the planet surface, that would help.

the other thing that bothers me is that there is no way to know if a geo/bio site has been already visited by someone or not. would be nice if we could leave there a beacon once we visited a site, that would be signaling something like: "visited by: CMDR X, discovered: brain tree X variant" and we could even see that from orbit.

all in all i think we need less quantity and more variety

Not sure if it's a good reason, but maybe because it's more realistic? There are about 1500 active volcanoes on Earth. So if a certain feature is possible it's probably also common.

You can roughly tell what type of biological you will encounter based on the properties of the world. The Space Urchin types are found on high G world's for example.

I have visited all biological signals on one world that had over 20 just to be sure. They were all the same it was just the quantity that varied.

To me as 'explorer' is enough to find stellar bodies. Visited few phenomenas for the achievements on Xbox, but I'm not really into them. I don't know how many ELW, WW tagged by me as first discovered/mapped, but I'm proud of 'my' 2 Wolf-Rayet stars. Also have few black holes and many Neutrons. Visited SagA* twice, and a few months ago finished a Beagle Point trip, so I completed almost everything on my bucket list, only one thing left, travel 1 million light years. About 120K need to it.

When the codex first came out in the beta there were "rumours" aplenty, these mysteriously vanished later in the beta's and live, I hope these are things that weren't ready and have yet to appear, it gives hint there will be new stuff, hopefully before 2020.

Probably worth bearing in mind that we cannot yet land on atmospheric worlds - so we can only find life that can survive in the vacuum of space or on airless (or near-airless) planets. And it's very implausible that life could evolve or survive there.

Which puts FDev in an awkward position. They want to give us goodies to find, but they haven't got around to giving us access to the places life is likely to exist. So personally I'm hoping they don't put in any more weird space life, and hold off until we have atmospheric landings and access to more plausible habitats for life.

Agreed, unless we get silica based life.

I suppose the hope is, come the next big update next year, that hopefully includes atmospheric worlds and ideally some really nice clever procedurally generated plant life/biological life with a serious nod to "science fact" with a nice dose of "science fiction" too (ie: based on stellar forge data etc).

So then when landing on these worlds, there 'sa chance of finding some nice diverse bio-diversity etc? Add in some nice weather, water and the life, and it could really add to exploration...

Obviously it's not possible to say for certain - but variations on this question have been asked since we first got the Codex in 3.3 Beta (with lots of doom and gloom on the Beta forums about how everything had clearly already been found in Beta and would just be quickly confirmed in the first few days of release!) - and so far it's always turned out that there was something else to find out there.

Some of the things which have been found are extremely localised, so if no-one happens to fly through that part of space, decide that the biological signals might not be bark mounds this time, and check them out ... then they might stay unknown for months to come.

I suspect there are still things out there that haven't been found yet - the regions to the north-east and north-west of the galactic core are much less explored, and might be good places to look for a new discovery.

At the moment we're dealing with vacuum-based life - either planetary or surface - which should be extremely rare.

But there is also a question of scale. Every single discovery needs modelling, texturing, giving codex descriptions in multiple languages, giving behaviours and properties and maybe research samples. Use of variants is going to be required to deliver this at all in a reasonable timescale.

Totally agree. I think it would be better if they simply add new/deeper meaning to the exisiting geological and biological findings: may be some additional information to discover with some new ways to get it. Honestly, I would like to see more RPG elements there (skills) - say, "after you scan 100 bark mounds you will get ability to exctract the N element from them to sell", or something like this, so we will really get a reason not to skip them.
