Meet the A.Y.S. Redoubt.
She's my main ship. Her job is to wander into RES sites, find the biggest group of bad guys, and fly in small circles while her turrets shoot at things above me, below me, and (as often as I can manage it), in front of me.
She's a beautiful girl, but she is not the star of this story.
Meet the A.Y.S. Lupus Rex.
You remember him right? I got him when I was fairly new, before I knew what engineering was, and expected a decent ship to make up for my deficiencies as a pilot. At the time, he didn't, and I left him - through no fault of his own - in the hangar as a failed experiment.
Well, coming up on the 2,500 hour mark and being eager for that Triple Elite badge, I decided after ratting in the belts for a couple of weeks in the big lumbering Redoubt, getting used to the glacial turn rate (and the fact that anything fired from anywhere in the belt would probably hit me) I decided I'd give something a little smaller a spin. So I spent most of today engineering the heck out of the FDL to give him the sort of build I wanted. He's a work in progress
I had a link to the fit on coriolis but it wasn't playing nice and would only link to the stock FDL fit. One moment...
Here we go.
Not perfect and doesn't show the engineering on each module, but it's a start.
He's intended to be a shield tank with a strong resistance to thermal weapons (since the pirates in the belt generally use lasers and whatnot, and missile launchers and autocannon are rare, there).
His weapons are 5x beam lasers, one class four, four class 2s. They have the Thermal Vent experimental effect so provided I hit what I'm shooting at, I have to wear mittens and a scarf on the flight deck. And just to be on the safe side, G5 dirty drives gives him a boost speed of 560m/s approx, so I can hightail it if I need to.
Took him into the belts and had a bit of fun just screaming around the asteroids at 560M/S. Eventually though, a few bad guys appeared and it was time to have a bit of a play around and see how things went.
At first, things didn't go well. I still had my Type 10 hat on, and I lost two rings of shields fighting a deadly FDL winged with a master FDS. But, I got the hang of it and started working my way through a few, then a few dozen pirates. At one point I was down to a single dim ring of blue on the shields, and damn they take a long time to recharge, but I survived and carried on fighting. The shields take a long time to recharge but they evidently take a long time to be battered down too.
It feels weird having to be pointing the ship at what I'm shooting at, having gotten so used to the turrets on the T10 practically doing the job as long as the bad guy was orbiting the same planet as me. I've gotten used to using a primary and secondary trigger again (rather than just a "you may fire when ready" button) but I'm still getting stuck in the space jousting routine where my opponent and I do figure-eights around each other.
The lasers are good out to about 4700m but that's hardly sporting.
So yeah. It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether. Rather than doing loop the loops in the type 10, I find myself having to actually fly the FDL.
And you know, I think I like it. It's a lot more work, but there's a satisfaction to be had.
Now, if I could just get my fit perfected and work the kinks out of the setup. I'm sure I've made some glaring errors somewhere. Any advice on flying the thing, or even on fitting him, is appreciated.
But yeah, it's been a good day.
